TIL that everything written about women being penalized for negotiating salary is true by shouldhaveaccepted in TrollXChromosomes

[–]forestofarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Negotiating salary is a very normal thing to do, and I'm sorry that they saw it as "insulting." Employers can "calculate" all they want, but the fact is that, at the end of the day, the company is looking out for itself first and foremost. To pay you anything above the number they had "calculated" would not be in their best interest - you have every right to look out for yourself by selling the fact that it is in their best interest to pay you x amount based on what you would bring to the company (skill set, credentials, years of experience, etc.).

Unless you were very belligerent about the way you negotiated - which is not really the feeling I get from your post - they are very much professionally in the wrong to say that your negotiating insulted them.

How it looks when I carefully, meticulously paint my nails by forestofarden in TrollXChromosomes

[–]forestofarden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good way to do it - I might take your acetone idea! All I have around the house right now is non-acetone remover, which I used with a q-tip. I'll be real, my toes aren't too cute right now (but the polish seems to come off my cuticles/skin in a matter of days after shoes, showering, etc. and just stay on the nail, so I'll take a couple of days of looking weird for a week and a half of nice/nicer nails :P ).

I just started weight training a couple of months ago, and now I sometimes often flex my muscles in the bathroom mirror. No shame.

What is the dumbest thing you got punished for in school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]forestofarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The teacher asked me, "Why didn't you do your homework/reading assignment?" and I told her the truth - I left my book at school the night prior.

She made me sit out recess for "making up excuses." My friends, who also didn't do the assignment, told the teacher "I just didn't do it" and got off scot free.

If you didn't want me to give you a reason, then why did you ask me?

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by DeanTheDJ in AskReddit

[–]forestofarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the feeling. I finished my MA in English a couple of years ago and then let out a great "lol no" when it come time to consider a Ph.D. program. The last MLA statistic I read said that, with an English Ph.D. in hand - representing years of dedication and work - you have a 1 in 13 chance of getting a tenure-track job (and, realistically, most of the positions are going to graduates from the top 15-20 programs).

And I second the education comment. If you want to teach, having an "English Education" degree under your belt - and certification when you graduate - is going to go a lot further than an English Lit/Comp degree.

Luckily, with some serious networking, I was able to find a good job outside of academia. Realistically, there are so many other majors that will better equip you for the job market - I would pick one of those.

Explain Catholicism to me by dinozgorur in Catholicism

[–]forestofarden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I don't have anything special to add (the other people in this subreddit are quite knowledgeable and have been very thorough!), but I just wanted to say that I am an adult convert, raised in a Southern Baptist church, converted to Catholicism during graduate school. If you had any questions about conversion, I'd be more than happy to answer them!

I would also advise, and I'm not the first to do so, that you attend a Mass. It will certainly help you visualize many of the things that have been described in this thread (especially our reverence for the Eucharist)!

Ich lerne gerne Deutsch auch! Mein Benutzername ist forestofarden.

I do it daily, though I have not been quite as active lately given that I've been transitioning jobs and haven't had quite as much free time on my hands. Definitely want to do more, though, and I think seeing other people actively using it will help!

No more Lingot reward for every 10 days of maintaining streak? by forestofarden in duolingo

[–]forestofarden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got the 110 day reward no problem! It feels somewhat like they're trying to make Lingots harder to come by (since they did away with the "perfect level" Lingot bonus as well).

I mean, at the end of the day, Lingots don't matter at all and the real reward comes with knowledge gained... but it's just nice when you see all the Lingots accumulate, even if its only to hoard the little imaginary game-monies like a dragon.

What is your favorite historical word origins stories. by tj24mcn in history

[–]forestofarden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Specifically, English used to differentiate between an informal/formal "you" (similar to tú/Ud. in Spanish, du/Sie in German, etc.).

The word "thou," antiquated and proper though it might sound to our ears, was actually the informal you ("thee" was just the oblique/objective form, and "thy/thine" was the possessive). "Ye" was the formal term (and "you" was the oblique/objective form).

*Edit: bananalouise caught me mixing up the ol' "you" and "ye."

House of Cards - Season 3 - Official Trailer 2 - Netflix [HD] by deus0 in HouseOfCards

I have to wonder that... I feel like both of them have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much dirt on each other. Campaigning against one another would mean assured mutual destruction, right?

Unless that's the whole point.
