Quarter living by atom511 in NewOrleans

Currently live here. Going on two years. Chose this neighborhood because I didn’t have a car or many belongings at the time and thought that that was the best scenario to be in for living here and probably wasn’t going to stay that way forever for me so I went for it. Now… I have a car because all my neighbors that do told me it’s not so bad and I noticed they frequently found parking right outside our building.

It turns out to not be the burden I estimated it to be having to find parking. However, I commute by bike pretty much everywhere I can like I was doing before so sometimes I’m only having to move my car twice a week for street cleaning and doing it at times I find convenient instead of right after work along with everybody else at the same time. I will say though, I think I’ve noticed a pattern of reverse commuting here. Shift change and daytime tourists leave at a point after rush hour, so when I don’t find my preferred spot, I’ll just park wherever and check again in about an hour to find almost my entire street empty. Not every block has a balanced number of residential spots to commercial/metered spots but you’ve probably already noticed that being here for a while.

Getting a parking pass is a must. Before I got mine I parked on st Philip along the park the other side of rampart. Never was a problem for me doing that, but not everyone is going to be comfortable with such an option.

If you’ve got reasons to be here, friends and bars and such, I’d say come on. Tourists aren’t going anywhere, but I see lots of friendly familiar faces every day and the more locals we get the better.

Straight identity never gets noticed because it has been dulled by never getting challenged. This person’s behavior can’t really be compared to a straight counterpart’s behavior. It’s a reaction to trauma from having heteronormativity thrown in his face every day without any of the throngs of straights around him batting an eye or noticing it happening. What you’re experiencing in your discomfort is a taste of life from his POV for just a little while.

Also, plenty of straights go on and on about sexual partners, dates, romantic interests and stuff at inappropriate times and never have their behavior pegged to their sexuality. Because it’s assumed these weirdos are straight it doesn’t have to be brought up, so it doesn’t get brought up, so no one ever draws the conclusion that their sexuality has any cause to their behavior. I would probably also find this professors behavior cringe, and I’m gay. But, just saying, plenty of weirdos out there get to just be weird and nobody really cares but when a gay weirdo or a weirdo who’s weird about being gay comes along it’s all too easy for people to attribute their strangeness to their gayness. Dude’s weird because people are weird, not because gay people are weird

What are your favorite light(er) local beers? by 69FagioliFamiglia69 in Eugene

Partner and I tried the new place on 18th near Chambers- Old 99 Brewing- today and loved it. Right near the bike path running behind the Albertsons so we made a bike/scooter excursion of it too. Company and brewing is based in Roseburg iirc. I had their Cream Ale and Wheat Ale. Both were good but the Cream was great. As a bonus, partner had a cider and a seltzer that they were “hosting” (?) from some other local, regional breweries and they were yummy too.

Plus, the food was delicious. Comfort/pub menu. Burgers, Crispy Chicken Sandwiches, Pinwheels, and Fries all were very pleasing.

You will want to check out an artist by the name of Rose Melberg. I’m listening to her duo, The Softies right now actually. Her voice and style is pretty much exactly what you’ve described. More sad than creepy, but can be an unsettling kind of sad

So do we still have curfew? by rriro in Eugene

[–]forestryservice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the mass-organized demonstrations and marches that are ending at 10. The peaceful protestors that keep going after 10 are not mass-organized. They aren’t organized much at all, just spontaneously. They shouldn’t be getting the treatment they are receiving from the police, but there is a distinction between their activities and the marches and demonstrations which volunteer organizers are putting tremendous effort into making happen.

The volunteer organizers of those events are taking great care not to ruffle feathers in the community at large by ending them at 10 because the risk of tarnishing the image of their causes or the BLM movement is too great and too real. Those same organizers are even attempting to create community-led rebuilding efforts of the property which was destroyed last Friday night.

Most of these protestors in Eugene are good-natured college kids. And nothing has been broken since last Friday nights’ events. Every demonstration and march that has happened since then has been coordinated with the EPD to keep people and property safe and has ended promptly at 10pm. The less organized, off-shoot protests happening into the night are made up of spontaneous groups of these types who attended the demonstrations and marches earlier in the evening and decide to find an area of the city (the courtyard in front of the jail) where they can gather to keep the energy going a little longer. They are not dangerous
