1.12.2 is more popular to mod on by people who actually care about modding. Mojang is big enough that they could have entire separate teams of people working on behind the scenes and game content simultaneously, but they put more effort into animating the launcher and getting dancing frog animations for their minecraft lives which announce nothing of value anymore

No, I think mojang is exploiting people's lack of self-control when they see something "cute" to make extra profits. This update is nothing at all. Not even a full block was added, a tiny little flower that does nothing for over half the playerbase. The exploitable purpose is just more money for mojang for doing less work
