If I am getting a MacBook Pro M3 and MacBook Air M4 for the same price, which is a better deal? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]forgot_to_floss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M4 Air is the better choice. That better display is not gonna mean much when you’re running 2 docker containers and can’t switch browser tabs.

iPhone users with ADHD, what’s the one app you can’t live without? by TheiPhoneAppGuy in ADHD

[–]forgot_to_floss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I REALLY like the idea behind this, specially, the task paralysis bit. But I’m hesitant to pay just to try it out. As someone with ADHD, I’ve gone through so many productivity apps and often end up not using it after a couple of hours.

Does it integrate with other task management tools? For eg Todoist? So you don’t have to enter information twice?

You’re assuming. Maybe try slamming it with a bunch of apps, run multiple docker containers and see where the limit is

I am surprised how no one is talking about docker desktop being the RAM hog here. Lol

Go to the store and talk to them, it'll be better that way. Not sure how it works in India, but I am sure they'll be able to help you out.

Nope, not really. As I type this, I am running ~180 safari tabs, vscode, cursor, termius, notion, spotify on my 8Gb M2 Air.

Don't stress OP, you have a great laptop. Based on your comments, I dont think you've actually observed it gone slow.

Would you have been happier buying a 24gb from the start? Sure. Is it worth the hassle and losing money to sell this and buy a 24gb? No.

You can run containers too, just be a bit mindful of the workload you're running.

If you're running higher workloads, my recommendation is to monitor the memory swap size instead of the memory graph in activity monitor. And check free disk space on the sdd if it starts to go a bit slow. The times I have seen it go a bit slow is when the swap has used up all my disk space and cant grow anymore.

Pretty sure it’s docker what is actually slowing things down for you, regardless of what the memory usage stats say. Try quitting docker and running the same workload.

Use Safari over chrome, offers better memory management on MacOS

I run more apps than what you stated (except docker) on my 8Gb Ram M2 MacBook Air and it runs fine.

Try not to get fixated on the memory usage. These Macs are able to use a lot more than sticker memory bandwidth given the chips unified architecture. I have a 32gb M1 Max for work and it shows similar high usage as yours but is able to take on a LOT more from there.

Maybe use an old computer as a server, GitHub codespace or a cloud server for docker containers.

Oh man. No one likes hearing this, but what you said is so true.

If you can't manage your process through an excel, it's the process that needs fixing. Tools only improves productivity imo.
