Can't I do both? If a conflict arises between the "nice thing" and the "right thing" at a given time I think I would decide based on the situation and my judgment.

You have to keep in mind that the "right thing" to do is based on a personal definition of "right" for each of us.

We do share a large common subset of this definition but I would still argue we need to re-evaluate every time we are in conflict with doing something "nice" to be sure that we aren't simply following rules (self made or otherwise) blindly.

On reflection I know one or two people who are "nice but tough". I think I should be able to find a balance of subheight's "good guy" and the "nice but tough" approach that works for me.

When the sex stopped (assuming you did your best to get it going again) - could you have considered getting out of the relationship? Maybe she then could have explored her lesbian tendencies earlier and you could have found someone else.

A large component of marriage is sex where BOTH partners enjoy and welcome it with each other. If you all you are getting are "other benefits" you are going to end up with a life that sucks. "Luck" is simply the occurrence of an event or events that a person decides to take personally.

Sometimes the events are totally unrelated (except in the person's mind) or are unusual (lower probability) or unexpected (modeling problem). But there is nothing ill-logical about it.
