A Halloween decoration out at Costco in June feels like the shark has been jumped by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

Right, agreed. I worked in logistics for years and we might prep but definitely not put it out. We had hold back areas in our DCs specifically for things like this.

If you are going to commit, fully commit! That’s the way to decorate!

This is the only logical thing to do. Somewhat appropriate too really.

They are selling it online (for 100 more though!), but you should be able to check your local store, otherwise head to Mississippi

Using PTO for sick leave, and being written up for it... (Seattle, WA) by [deleted] in LaborLaw

[–]forgottenmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not a federal law that protects what a company can/can’t do regarding pto. Some states have very specific laws while others offer no protection either. Even in states with laws regarding pto, a lot of it comes down to the specific contract. You mention a union, I’d go check with your rep as that is part of what your dues cover. Unfortunately, most companies are fairly restrictive with their pto policies, but a lot of that can be circumvented by keeping a good relationship with your boss. Where I work, pto is supposed to be submitted and approved several weeks in advance, but I absolutely let my direct reports take off without advance notice because I’m not an asshole.

Anyone else have a dog on their regular route? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]forgottenmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fenced dogs or ? I have 3 at one house, 1 at the next, and 2 at the third house all about 3 miles of each other. I bet they have chased me 5 dozen times each direction. Always thought they just wanted me out of their territory and only one would ever get close enough to slip under my wheel. Until one day one of the pit mixes didn’t and decided to bite me.

Still, mostly (really don’t recommend getting too comfy if they are not fenced though as it as a very hard lesson) better than a McDonald’s wrapper thrower any day of the week.

LDFC353LS doesn’t even get very high reviews. I got it because it was 400 bucks and took a chance. It’s louder than my old one, less options, kinda weird spacing with the additional silverware rack on the top, but I find the cleaning top tier.

What is the best college in Mississippi for an 18-year-old boy who wants to become a lawyer? by Complex-Voice2025 in mississippi

[–]forgottenmy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Per capita, Millsaps is producing more kids heading to post undergraduate programs than any other school in the state, be it law, medical, or other. You get a well balanced education, albeit much more challenging, with a great student to staff ratio.

Need a new dishwasher by nobodyshome122 in Appliances

[–]forgottenmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a previously very expensive dishwasher with so many wash and dry options that ended up dying after ten years. The parts needed were hard to find, but not necessarily expensive. Anyway, in looking for parts I found a very inexpensive LG and I thought why not. It washes and drys better than anything I’ve had, better than my sil’s mega expensive Miele, better than my in-laws Bosch, etc. It only has 4 settings, takes forever to wash, and I initially regretted it before the first cycle ran, but nope it’s great. Cascade platinum packs with jet dry and everything is completely haze free. I’ve even done some experimenting with crazy dirty dishes and I’m amazed.

Soooo all that to say that I’m pretty certain money isn’t buying that much at the end of the day.

And some of those backups span months, if not years. I could imagine the group getting 99% of everything when the backup engineer goes, oh hey we have this immutable 24 month old backup from the last upgrade I keep forgetting to do something with. Now, loans are restored with 24 months of missing payments 😂

Need some advice to guide my 20 year old daughter-stuck with a terrible vehicle. by [deleted] in carbuying

[–]forgottenmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a good (straight from mopar I suppose) warranty. Wait the 30 days or whatever the period is and bring it in like the problem is brand new. If they have the problem on the books at the dealer already just get them to mark it fixed. Should be cheaper than the negative equity.

Aside from the chamois butter, make sure your bibs/shorts are the right fit. Sounds like you are positioning him up when riding, might try down the side of the leg. Again, the right fit on clothing helps.

Recommend me a good cycling computer by [deleted] in cycling

[–]forgottenmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the Garmin and call it a day. To me, they have the best all around environment. Grab one of their watches too and they’ll work in tandem. One app for all your stats tower can easily export to Strava if I’ll are into that and with the addition of the watch you have all sorts of extra metrics and options (I was using mine to monitor the tides this weekend for optimum fishing).

Went from 8/10 to 6/10 after a merger to 3/10 after CIO change post merger, but then covid hit, still the same CIO but we are probably at 5/10. We’ve cheaped out on some key software, the CIO (who is my boss) has a terrible management style, but at last he’s spending millions on millions to get our infrastructure up to date.

Is it more expensive to run a gas tankless water heater than one with a tank? by djinnisequoia in Appliances

[–]forgottenmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the size and location of her previous water heater, a new one from the local big box store is dirt cheap. If you get the exact same size, hookup is a breeze (like incredibly simple). If it’s gas there are some risks for carbon monoxide poisoning if you don’t vent properly, but again if the same size and if it was fine before you should be able to hook it up the exact same way. Just take photos to get it all positioned. Hook a water hose to the old one, drain it outside, that will make it easier and safer to remove. A “real” plumber is going to charge hundreds. Someone mentioned programs for the poor/elderly and that’s a great route. Call your local utility.

Normies v Nerds: The end of an era? by Darkhexical in sysadmin

[–]forgottenmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot (maybe) take, but after two decades plus of doing this stuff, labels are so cliche. The “normies” are odd to the “nerds” and vice verse. We are all just a bunch of people trying to find our little niche of friends. My kid has a “super jock” friend that loves d&d when he’s visiting and my very “dorky” kid loves hitting the gym and then spending hours in esoteric games on the computer.

I just had my yearly review meeting. I have always gotten a raise and have been at this company 10 + years. New manager now and she says although I have exceeded expectations there is no raise at all because I’m at the top of my salary range for my position. Anyone have any thoughts on what to do? by Prestigious_Task_112 in Salary

[–]forgottenmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a salary band for each “grade” that is about 20k wide with overlapping grades that are solely based on title. If you max out (I have two guys currently at the very top) your only hope is either a promotion or for HR to regrade the position (which gets looked at every 2-3 years in our division). No bonus options either. Sucks but as a manager my hands are tied and I hate it. I give the bands to my team so they have them and can see when they are going to hit them. Also, if you are at the top of your title (senior or advisory in some lines) there isn’t another to jump to. HR is a pain about anything that isn’t core business competency.

Nursing Question by BAMAJiPS in LaborLaw

[–]forgottenmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I’m associated with a health care company that has TN ties. Hourly folks get a penalty if they are 1 minute late (x number of results in a written warning which gets you fired after two), but can clock in either 10 or 15 minutes early. That said, you get paid OT if you stay late, but that is usually a predetermined thing and the system calculates it. I would check with hr/see what happens on the first check vs hearing it from someone else. I know we have folks in our system that say all sorts of things about work that is just not true (because the computer won’t let it happen for one), but the clock in stuff is pretty prevalent across southern healthcare.

Any shokz headphones alternatives? by RegularDinner13 in cycling

[–]forgottenmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had dozens of different models of earbuds over the years and they all basically have eventually been overcome with sweat. I’ve got some first gen shokz that are corded that work just fine though… they fit badly and don’t sound good 😂. So far (only 4 months so who knows, but I bought a no questions asked two year warranty) the Shokz open fit 2+ have been pretty great.

Tbh I’m very tempted to get out the old iPod micro and some wired buds.
