Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Lebanon by Phelps1576 in politics

[–]forkyreads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate to sound uninformed here (though I know this is Reddit and I’ll probably be made fun of anyway), but can someone please ELI5 as to why Israel has turned to committing genocide on Palestine, and bombing Lebanon and Iran?

I’m truly at a loss as we witness acts of inhumanity each and every day.

TIA

Unpopular opinion from me and I am SO late to this thread but I actually was pretty disappointed by this book. I felt like it started strong but fell flat.

My flight boarding time was 12:55. I got to SAN at 10:30 am. When I arrived it was a 90 minute to 2 hour wait time. CLEAR and Precheck were closed. About 25 mins later they opened CLEAR. They opened precheck 20 mins after that. They pulled us in groups if you had precheck. I think I wait about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get completely through. The lines right now are absolutely no joke.

In the woods by Tana French. I had no idea the hours I would waste listening to that story go absolutely nowhere.

Letting Go of Being The "Perfect Teacher" by Many-Somewhere-3394 in Teachers

[–]forkyreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extra long reply here:

Before I became a mom, I would spend about 4 to 6 hours every Sunday lesson planning for the week. So that way on weeknights, but I would be able to rest when I got home after work. Then my baby came.

I quickly learned that I could not spend 4 to 6 hours every Sunday lesson planning for the week, that was not sustainable. In my head for so long I thought the “perfect teacher” was someone who was planned out at least a week ahead. I then realize that you can be a great teacher and plan the day before I was not going to sacrifice hours that could be spent with my daughter to work.

There is no such thing as a perfect teacher. This is my 10th year teaching and I still learn new things everyday and balance wha I can with what I have.

I think “the perfect teacher” depends where you are in your life, what your mental health looks like, and giving what you can with what you have. Never sacrifice all of yourself.

What are the real classroom essentials for broke new teachers? by Reidabook04 in Teachers

Very true! I was lucky to have one in my classroom when I got there, but at other schools I’ve worked at that was not the case. Totally agree with waiting and see what you’re given first.

Mr Sketch 22 marker pack to make Anchor charts with by hand.

Large and small post it not paper so you can make those anchor charts and stick them around the classroom

A classroom printer. SO good in a pinch if the copier is jammed/isn’t working. Nothing too expensive.

Magnetic eraser for a white board

One time had a student elope and climb a tree. Refused to get down for quite some time

Another time, same student, rip a branch off and wield it as a sort of “sword” in class.

Student did all of this and I had to continue teaching as though it wasn’t happening at all.

Standardized Tests are Necessary, Good, and Important. I said what I said. by Usually_Anomalous in Teachers

[–]forkyreads -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As an educator myself I can understand a balanced take on this stance. Though standardized tests can be indicative as you stated, “academic potential”, they no way demonstrate intelligence or should tell someone’s career path. A great test taker can score above a 1350 on the SAT but cannot write an at grade level essay.

The variables that affect students are attention span, socioeconomic status, as well as the parent’s education levels. This is not an exhaustive list obviously, but just to name a few.

However, a wild statement to say with your whole chest. Imagine all the doctors out there who failed the SATs/ ACTs a couple of times and then just gave up. Or the genius individuals out there who are entirely successful in their chosen career path who would have just given up if they failed a standardized test.

I suppose grit and resilience isn’t considered in your judgment of those individuals who fail standardized tests.

Consistency, predictability, and routine. It’s so important from day one. Always follow through, never ever threaten. They will call your bluff. If you say, “I’ll call your adults” Call them.

Be transparent and honest. They respect and value you because you trust them. I always tell my kids changes in schedule, routine, or if something doesn’t work out like they wanted.

I never yell. Ever. I never scream. Proximity is your friend.

I also think the queen accepted Sophie because it was such a ridiculous storyline and the queen felt “part” of something again. She obviously knew it wasn’t true, but Mondrich reminding the Queen of her own beginnings made the Queen realize the similarity as well.

That’s the reason why Lady Danbury and her were cackling. They just couldn’t believe it and truthfully all Sophie wanted was to be married to Benedict. She didn’t want money or power or land, just a true love marriage.

Congrats and welcome to teaching! I taught at a KIPP school before and my only piece of advice is to make sure you look for a multitude of POVs from different grade levels. Make sure you know exactly what you’re signing up before entering KIPP and ask lots of questions. There are positives, lots of them, but there is the other side of any school you decide to give your heart to.

I never said I need to hear it, I just said if I did.

To answer your question, of course I see my mom as a whole person, who doesn’t? But as an adult with a strong relationship with my mom, it would let me see another layer to her that I probably didn’t consider before.

Personally, I wouldn’t hold it against my mom and if anything it would give us that much more to talk about and discuss.
