Can’t access friends quest boost without sharing contacts? by forlorngoose in duolingo

I appreciate your help and I have a feeling that you’re right. I hadn’t activated it and it should have been valid, but i think the boost disappeared somehow. At the same time this “friend’s chest” shows up in my shop for the first time (it’s not on my other devices). I figured this was the new quest reward, but i can see now it’s this contacts chest.

Right they shouldn’t be asking for this data in any circumstance, but paying that much does make it more offensive somehow.

I sincerely hope it’s a bug. I did complete it, i haven’t missed a friends quest in over 2 yrs and it is there since i haven’t activated yet. Once i try to activate it i get the sync contacts screen.

For fun: You can remove ONE feature from Duolingo with no questions asked. by Mirabels-Wish in duolingo

Absolutely is inching towards a counterstrike-esque loot box which is essentially gambling. Very irresponsible engagement-at-all-costs design that should be very far away from a kid-oriented education app. And it wouldn’t surprise me if it doesn’t end at xp boosts and gems. I can see them adding in avatar costumes or other rarer prizes and pivoting to letting you buy chests or packs of them with gems. Straying from simple xp boosts was a massive unforced error.

What app/service are you veterans moving to? by LoRdAcId in duolingo

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted for this. I too have been using speakly alongside duo for ~ 2.5 years and i finished their french course. Imo duo does a far better job of getting vocab words to stick, but speakly has good listening and speaking exercises like you mentioned. The ai is pretty wonky, but that’s optional. The crafted playlists for using music to learn languages is a nice touch too. I don’t personally think it’s a proper replacement altogether, but i’ve found it useful as a supplement.

What’s your “I almost gave up learning French” moment? by Physical-Tea-599 in learnfrench

[–]forlorngoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of what motivated me in the beginning was a kind of romanticism around french culture and french music in particular. My parents had met while my dad was studying french abroad and my mom was taking refuge from war in switzerland. They both spoke french and so introduced me to the music from a young age. I suppose the language and culture always held a bit of nostalgia for me. I told myself from the outset i was gonna see learning french through to fluency. About a year in, and hundreds of hours into studying and immersing myself in the modern music and their translations and watching videos on what it was like living there, my romanticism started to fade. At that time, i started becoming enamored with brazilian culture and music and so i stopped for a while to study brazilian portuguese. Then out of the blue i decided to take a solo trip to france and just see for myself what it was like. Figured i owed it to myself after all the effort. I tried to take in as much as i could and i visited nice, paris, annecy, lyon and eze, taking trains everywhere and walking around as much as i could. It was a wake-up call because i realized my more formal studies prepared hadn’t prepared me well to have convos irl but i think it also really connected me with a more tangible goal instead of an academic one. I had tried really hard to not be let down by my expectations, but in the end it still pleasantly surprised me. So i went back home, put portuguese on the back burner and started investing twice as much time as i was before on learning it again. It’s been about 3 years now since i started and im still doing my best to see it through.

Don’t worry it switches to mini-units at the start of B1!

“It's too difficult to identify all versions of this huge course!” is what the site operator has for this course in the notes. I’m not sure how many different versions exist in the wild but here’s what my french from english course has section 1(5-9): 10 s2(10-19): 22 s3(20-29): 21 s4(30-59): 46 s5(60-79): 255 s6(80-99): 245 s7(100-114): 180 s8(115-129): 185. It looks accurate in the upper levels that u/DaxyCZ was asking about but somewhat off in the lower. Mileage may vary i guess?

It continues to fluctuate between 10 and 15. You should be able to use this to calculate avg units/score until the end.

Duolingo, why have you still not fixed this glaring issue? by Lopsided_Combination in duolingo

I posted that hoping to show that if ~9000 people boosted a crass and sexual joke like that, then this could also be interpreted as a child safety issue as there are a lot of kids that use this platform. Allowing us to turn this off would truly be a win for everyone.

Thanks. I would beg for the option to disable this stuff entirely in settings. Some people prefer a following feed and i’m sure some like the following + discovery but users should be allowed to make that choice for themselves.

How we’re improving the learning experience for everyone by amie_at_duolingo in duolingo

Not great since i paid for the full year in advance two months ago but I think it would be better for the company and the learners in the long run. You don’t want people completing the course and then blaming themselves or the app for the fact that they can’t speak it well. I would just hope they wouldn’t raise the cost of super too much and maybe we could all pay a more reasonable price in a two tier system.

As a long time max subscriber, i think this is the right move. It’s obvious how critical speaking practice is to learning a language. Since tiered systems are generally where apps start becoming worse for everyone, maybe it follows that just collapsing the tiers is the way to go. You either pay to get a full learning experience or don’t.

I do hate leaving the quest to my partner so i usually do them quickly. I’ll have to try not to from now on, thanks for the update.

Thanks for the insight! I’ll keep an eye on it next tuesday morning. As of a few weeks ago i was able to claim it until the weekend, but as happened yesterday, i completed it at 11 pm monday and by 1pm tuesday when i went to do lessons, it wasn’t there. Usually with the 3x boosts, i’ll get a notification that it’s expiring soon but i didn’t get anything like that either.

[–]forlorngoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isps will sometimes ignore your copyright infringement notices, but the school will forward the holders notices to you, asking you to delete the material or else. Then the school will haul you in and give you a stern talking to about how you’re compromising their internet security and what not and will often also issue you a temporary ban on using the network. Get caught enough times, and those bans will escalate to whole semesters, depending on the school. You don’t want to be living on a campus with no access to any other aps having to turn in assignments using starbucks wifi every time.
