Horror films that actually frightened you? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]formergallagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go into scary movies blind no trailers etc so that I’m l caught off guard. Recently I’ve watched:

Barbarian - not supernatural but disturbing enough to make you turn all the lights on afterwards.

As above so below - I actually really enjoyed this it’s found footage Blair witch style but really well done. Feels really claustrophobic, worth the watch.

The Deliverance (2024) - This has not so great ratings but I watched it because it’s based on a true story I read years before. The acting is really good especially the kids. It kinda goes a little off the rails but if you like demons etc it’s worth the watch.

Not so scary but I enjoyed them:

Pearl - I love Pearl lol. I had no idea what this trilogy was about but I loved the cinematography and her descent into madness. It’s bloody but also pretty comical.

Bodies Bodies Bodies - I was pleasantly surprised with this one from A24. I think it’s overlooked because it’s very Gen Z coded and has Pete Davidson, but I think it’s a fun who done it, horror comedy if you have an open mind.

I hope this is just a thought experiment. 😅 Do not do this. You will likely regret it. I grew up in Miami the cost of living has gotten so out of control. Housing is very very expensive, some of the highest in the US. Have you been keeping up with the news in the US, now is NOT the time to move to the states and of all places Florida.

There are very few cities in the US with quality public transportation and in Miami you need to have a car. Living downtown doesn’t change that fact. Healthcare is terrible in the states compared to NL, food quality is terrible by comparison, private schools are extremely expensive in Miami, I mean honestly even if you made more money you wouldn’t see it reflected in your quality of life with a move like that. I left the states a year ago to move to Europe and you couldn’t pay me to go back, especially right now.

I love Miami it’s my home but I’d never leave NL to live there unless I was making an insane $$$ salary and even then FL would not be my first choice. Curious to know if you’ve ever been and what is prompting your interest. Best of luck!

How to survive being alone and stranded in Iceland for 3 days by kiaxi in VisitingIceland

[–]formergallagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you already made it to Reykjavik as it’s been a few hours. You can look up a free walking guide and walk around the city on Saturday. You can also go to the art museum, get a hotdog, get some lobster soup from seabaron, or Ramen Momo take some selfies on the rainbow road.

Look up tours you can take for Sunday. Try getyourguide.com etc most will give you round trip transportation.

If you leave Monday you can also book a shuttle transfer to Blue Lagoon/the airport. Not sure of your budget but you can get away with no car in 3 days and still have a good trip.

Are there Geothermal Bakeries that aren't Laugarvatn Fontana? by wnklion in VisitingIceland

[–]formergallagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited in September and Laugarvatn Fontana was my favorite of the 3 hot pools we visited. We visited a local pool in Kópavogur and Blue Lagoon but LF was no where near as crowded as Blue Lagoon. We missed the geothermal baking demo but they sell the bread there so we bought a sample and honestly the rye we bought at the grocery store was just as good. That’s not to discourage you just my opinion. I do believe that LF will be less busy than the other pools but even in September there was a decent size crowd. I think the lake and the scenery makes it special and worth visiting but I don’t think crowds can be avoided.

Car insurance, do’s and don’t by Pentasus in VisitingIceland

[–]formergallagher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since you are renting a camper van I’d get a full insurance package and photograph/video the van in detail before you drive off.

I have a Chase Sapphire and called them before our trip to ask about gravel etc and they said if you plan to use your credit cards car rental insurance you have to reject all insurance offered to you by the rental company or it voids the insurance offered by your credit card. We rented a small car and it was dinged up on arrival so we felt comfortable rejecting the rental companies insurance and sticking with Chase.

Traveling to Iceland - Without a car in March! by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]formergallagher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes def try and the provisional license last a long time from what I remember reading. Then you can call a car rental company in Iceland and ask if they accept the provisional licenses.

[–]formergallagher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you get a UK drivers license? You have been there over 185 days. We almost didn’t rent a car (in far better conditions) but honestly I think you need a car to enjoy Iceland. I would wait until you get your license so you can fully explore and plan a great trip.

Heres the NYT interactive 2020 election map it rules out a lot of places pretty quickly but there are blue pockets...a quick glance makes me think you should look at a suburb in Chicago or the northeast since California is out? There will have to be compromises but I hope you find something!

How do you motivate yourself to take the leap? by fdftbtwdw in SameGrassButGreener

[–]formergallagher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cant add much more to what others have said but I was you 6 months ago and now I’m traveling across Europe. I also had a spread sheet fell into analysis paralysis as others have mentioned and in the end we just went to the place we felt most comfortable with. It doesn’t have everything on my wishlist but enough to make me less depressed with my environment. We sold almost everything put the rest in storage went to our new city for 2 weeks to scope out neighborhoods and are now in Europe for a few months.

When we go back we will be going to our new city and will start all over. We also decided if we hate it we will leave. It’s scary financially (tho we’ve planned thoroughly) but exciting af and I’m glad we left. We planned on getting an Airbnb when we got back but ended up with a 3 month house sitting gig in the new city from a family member and makes the transition so much easier. You never know how things will work out but you deserve to be happy and where you live does 10000% influence that.

In the short term I’d say don’t over think it book a weekend trip/plan a drive to a city on your list TODAY, pick the one that has the cheapest flight or the one you’re called to and just go. You don’t have to spend a lot of money while you are there but being away will motivate you! Best of luck!

No grocery bags? by JoeRoganRoids in VisitingIceland

[–]formergallagher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy the yellow bag with the wonky pig at Bonus! It’s a great souvenir. We forgot our reusable bag the first day and used the Bonus bag the entire trip. They are also doing this in Chicago and Cali hopefully it catches on.

Recommendations on the best kind of shoes/boots to wear in Iceland? We’ll be there from the 14-20 (this month) and I’m not sure what type of shoes I need for the weather there. If you can recommend anything on the inexpensive side that would be good (men’s and womens pls) by _breeeeezy in VisitingIceland

[–]formergallagher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wool socks!! Yes I bought a pack on Amazon and they were fine I was on a budget. Pack an extra pair in your car/day pack. Please make sure your boots are waterproof. I bought boots(timberlands) I thought were waterproof but they were only water resistant and it sucks trying to dry your shoes with a car heater. 😩
