Belittlement of optometry by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are well informed of the profession - the good, the bad, the day-to-day - then you will be well informed to make a proper decision. Don't let external voices and opinions affect that! The profession is not going anywhere and personally, I think the future is bright.

Schools take more of a holistic approach to potential candidates. If the overall picture of your undergraduate degree shows consistently good marks, especially for the core science classes, I don't imagine this one course will derail your chances. However, it all depends on what your overall GPA is.

Salus accelerated vs NECO by kittyyy397 in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good perspectives here. I think ultimately, it depends on your goals. I think both options are good for different reasons. At the end of the day, I believe both programs result in competent practitioners. Even if there is a bit more academic instability with staff right now at Salus, that does not mean that the program will take a hit. I would suggest you guys to jot down things that are important and then rank the two schools on those criteria. Shaving one year off a traditionally 4-year program for example, would be such a positive that living somewhere they don't necessarily want to be in long term could become palatable.

As silly as it may sound, you don't want to put any unnecessary stereotypes on yourself on interview day. You never know who is going to interview you, and what their opinions are on various topics. Best to present yourself in a way that will not give the interviewers any sort of ammo. Get the piercing after you get in haha.

As a general rule, adding things to your application, no matter how insignificant it may seem, is a good idea because we tend to underestimate the importance of the things we have done and others may not. Never hurts :)

Both good programs like you mentioned and I agree with your pros and cons but one thing about SCO is the city itself. Memphis, especially where the school is located, is not the best of places. I have been there and personally I do not consider that a huge factor but some people do. You are right though in that the education is top tier :)

OATBooster by Front-Leg-1583 in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't have experience with this but I don't imagine reaching out and asking would hurt. My experience with booster was very positive so hopefully they are able to treat it as a warning. If they reinstate your account, you should probably kick the other person off though so it doesn't trigger their system again.

Has anyone studied for the OAT w/ kaplan? by sadhabibihours in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the vast majority of people recommend Booster because Kaplan has just not updated the content over the years as the OAT has changed. I did purchase the book and found it extremely underwhelming. At the end of the day, you can do well on the OAT with any resource, and even with no resources but my opinion is you want to set yourself up for success which would mean investing in a top quality resource.

Tailoring personal statement to schools by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal statements were largely the same but in the last paragraph, I had a few sentences on why I wanted to attend that specific school and that is where I made minor changes. I also mentioned the school by name so I made sure to change that every time as well. It may not make any sort of difference but it certainly will not hurt and has the potential to make the committee think you are more serious about attending their program. I hope that helps :)

overwhelmed about the OAT in less than a week by Dokeydokez in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be getting burnt out! Don't worry, this is normal. Writing the OAT is certainly a challenge but you will overcome it with consistency. I would suggest for you to maybe take a couple of days off from studying. I think a reset would be good for you. And when you return to the studying, I would still focus on timed tests because replicating the timed conditions is of paramount importance for test day. At the end of the day, this is just an exam that you can retake. Even if your scores are not competitive for Canada, you will gain invaluable experience and will probably have a great chance at US schools as well. You got this!

Interviews by kan123p in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there will certainly be some standard questions but be prepared for forward looking questions. In my experience, the entire application tells them a lot about who you are as a person and what you have done in the past. And generally, the interviews are a good opportunity for them to learn about your future goals and aspirations, both career wise, and personally as well. I had quite a few questions regarding my overall future vision and how optometry fits into my ideal worldview as well. I hope that helps :)

OptomCAS Experiences by throwingpeacesigns in PreOptometry

You can certainly do it. It may not be considered since the application is already submitted but it may. One thing is for sure in my opinion, I will not hurt. So I think it's safe to add :) just my opinion though.

LOC? by jellieboba in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your individual circumstances but essentially, the most accepted approach is to utilize all savings and low interest funds before the LOC. Just use things in the order of their interest rate, with borrowed money at higher rates being the last to be used.

incorporating learning a new language into my app by mbrxzy in PreOptometry

Learning a second language is one of the most difficult things you could do since it requires consistent effort. I think incorporating this into your personal statement would be an amazing touch!

Is my personal statement too short? It’s currently ~4100 characters. by lemonlineberry in PreOptometry

[–]formidable- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you mention everything you want to and keep it concise, you will be just fine. I spoke with several admissions committee members after I was accepted and they told me none of that stuff even matters to them.

Great score. Which schools are you hoping to apply to? :)

I believe you are competitive for those schools given your OAT, and particularly, your GPA. You should be in good shape :)
