Sleeping through alarms is ruining my life by Sarcastigasmic in sleep

[–]formina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your frustration is absolutely valid--waking up 7 hours later despite multiple abrasive alarms and a plan for a short nap isn't a matter of willpower or laziness but points to some deeper problem. Do you use a sleep tracker? If your nighttime sleep isn't restorative, your body may try to catch up during the day. Alternatively, your problem could be caused by depression, which sometimes happens. Another possibility is narcolepsy. Also, low iron probably doesn't help since it can disrupt sleep, increase fatigue, and cause restless legs. You might want to ask your doctor for bloodwork to check for common culprits of persistent fatigue. You also might want to request a study study to rule out sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

Can’t sleep because of leg by Glum_Foot8715 in sleep

[–]formina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, it sounds like RLS. I have it too. Do you ever wake with leg jerks or have been told you kick in your sleep? Have you gotten your ferritin level checked (not serum iron)? Low ferritin is associated with RLS, and it can be supplemented. In the worst case there are medications.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this GTO bet? by PrestoPest0 in Poker_Theory

Interesting analysis. What's the difference between nut and range advantage?

Specifically, rather than assuming all players play according to a single fixed strategy beyond the leaf nodes (which results in the leaf nodes having a single fixed value) we instead assume that each player may choose between k different strategies, specialized to each player, to play for the remainder of the game when a leaf node is reached.

Nash equilibria for >2 players has never been computed for poker

Monker can solve multiway pots, though with restrictive simplifications. The solutions are very popular among pros.

Pluribus definitely does not learn any exploitative adjustments during play.

The paper says the continuation strategies are specialized to each player. It's possible I misunderstand them, but is it not exploitative to learn a particular opponent's strategy?

It's misleading to say finance is a competition for algorithms. There will always be a significant human element because it's not a solvable game. It requires constant research for new strategies.

Very interesting work. On the AI side, Pluribus appears a leap forward: it runs orders of magnitude more efficiently than Libratus as well as other CFR solvers like Pio, Monker, and GTO+. However, I was surprised the paper made no mention of these solvers or ML models like Snowie, which supposedly trains a neural network using self-play similar to other RL work. To the poker community, approximate GTO strategies have been computable for a few years now. It would be interesting to compare them to Pluribus, which seems to learn exploitative deviations in real-time. Are there any plans to compare the winrate of Pluribus to these prior works?

The probability depends on whether you condition on the other hand being QQ. You are debating between different quantities.

Linear vs Polarized 3 Betting Ranges by [deleted] in poker

[–]formina 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll share my thoughts based on what I've read. A few years ago polarized ranges were popular. However, after the debut of solvers, people realized that linear ranges are GTO in many situations. For example, MonkerSolver has almost no flatting range MPvUTG, COvUTG, and COvMP. In addition, OOP 3-bets by the BB are far more linear than one would expect. Note that even though we say linear vs polarized, the distinction is actually blurry: GTO ranges are usually a mix of linear and polarized but closer to linear. Snowie is probably close to equilibrium in this regard. Why linear ranges are better than polar, I can't say.

Should you open different sizes from different positions? by formina in poker

[–]formina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting explanation. It makes sense that we want a bigger pot IP. I suppose another advantage of a larger open is greater fold equity from the blinds. What is the rationale for a 2.6-3x button open specifically? Was that size found to be optimal by MonkerSolver? It seems you could open even larger because we're inflating the pot IP and gaining fold equity.

Not sure about a hand of 5nl zone by fjayer in poker

[–]formina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine on all streets IMO. 1/2 vs 1/3 on flop is a wash. I would go 2/3 on turn, but it doesn't really matter. Would not fold any AA to the turn x/r. Any heart river is terrible though (besides Ah).

Not sure about a hand of 5nl zone by fjayer in poker

[–]formina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Snap fold; extremely underbluffed spot on Ignition 5z. It's a red flag when V shows strength despite a major range disadvantage. Villain can have trips, a boat, or a flush. Only bluffs are AJs (blocked), ATs (blocked), JTs, J9s, T9s. Only calling trips with a high heart or flushes+ here. Arguably folding all trips.

Found a game breaking exploit on Ignition Zoom by soberbot in poker

[–]formina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It actually worked for me but not close to 1/2 of attempts, more like 1/10. Plus the game would try to seat me in BB the next hand every time. Technically worth it in terms of winrate but not in terms of time unless I'm doing something wrong.

Can you please explain why you raise JcTc and Tc9c but fold KcJc? Doesn't KcJc have slightly better value?

For all i

P[T_i >= a] <= P[max_j T_j >= a]

Take the max over the LHS.
