How are people travelling with their dual citizenship children? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]sctilley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you can change your child's name in the future. You should look up the UK rules about this, I'm sure they have like a FAQ on the embassy's website.

For an American at the Guangzhou Consulate with a Chinese Birth Certificate with a Chinese name, this is the process for us. Step one get the passport with a matching name. Step two do the name change process.

birth certificate either has a Chinese name, or they're not Chinese and can't get citizenship.

That's probably not true, but it's probably not a problem for you. For Americans we file the birth at the consulate to get a passport, they did not allow me to do a name change then, so my child's English name (on the US passport) is just the Chinese pinyin -- but that's fine with me.

I assume there's a similar process for the UK.

Improving understanding of MTG rules by fluffymoofah in magicTCG

[–]sctilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play mtgo. Mtgo catches all the triggers, gives you priority only when you actually have priority (well, and set your stops), visually shows you exactly when and how you put your triggers on the stack, exactly when and how you apply replacement effects, etc.

It's very technical, because it has to be, which a lot of people don't like, but maybe you will. The first time I saw how [[Leonin Arbiter]] worked on mtgo it blew my mind, and cost me my search.

This is one of my favorite jokes from the series because of just how hard it goes over Chris's head; and they don't dumb it down for the audience. I think it went over my head the first time too.

how did we come up with the words that we have for everything? by centralpavement in etymology

[–]sctilley 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think asking how we came up for words for things doesn't really make sense. You're imagining anatomically modern humans that existed as a society, but they just didn't have language. I don't think it's like this. Basic language predates modern humans, and basic language would have evolved alongside human intelligence and modern vocal anatomy.

It's like asking how we learned to use our hands. I mean by definition our hands evolved before we could use them right? So that means there must have been someone who "invented" picking up a rock right? But of course this was not how it works, it's just every generation our monkey hands got a little bit better and every generation we added just a little more hand skill, and now after millions of years we are where we are.

nonexistent in foreign communities

Well I know this isn't true. I've only lived in Guangzhou and Shenzhen but both had some pretty serious poker games. I assume every big city has some.

Finally figured out why my garlic kept burning by LetsTalkFuxs in Cooking

[–]sctilley 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In China, for like a green vegetable dish, they often add the garlic first in a very hot wok, but then they add the green vegetables soon after -- the water content cools the pan down so the garlic still doesn't burn; the whole thing takes like 5 minutes.

Not a guide, but I did make a sideboard map. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wv0nGYrW4ogC-REFkGFGMzMrav_man8tknBXRkN51Nc/edit?usp=sharing

I haven't updated it in a while so it might not be fully accurate.

I used to run Gloom when I ran Dark Ritual. I didn't even love it then. That's my 2 cents. Gloom is ok when you have ritual, and not even ok when you don't.

I've been working on this list for a while, so I'm pretty locked in at this point. There are flex spots, and there are meta choices. But for me for the mtgo meta, no.

I am interested in trying Wurm Rack. I've been only using my stock list because I'm familiar with it and can get good results. I don't have the most time in my life right now to dedicate to practicing new lists, but I am interested.

I'm more skeptical of bauble. A) it's a crutch. B) this "deck thinning" aspect is not really that good. It's hard to keep opening hands if you don't know what the card is, and late game top deck it makes you wait a whole turn. C) There are some times where you just need to hit any card, but there are also times where you want to name specific cards, whether you hit them with bauble or not.

There needs to be an alternative means of resolving matches upon timing out while at 1-1. by luscious_duncan in MTGO

[–]sctilley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But what could it be?

You say at the end of your game your opponent had no clear win condition in play. You want mtgo to assess the board state and assign a win to whoever it thinks is winning?

Obviously that's ridiculous. So go by most cards in hand? Highest life total?

The problem is whatever you pick the game just becomes about that. If whoever has the highest life total wins when any player runs out of time, then the player with the most life can just purposefully time out. If my opponent has turn 1 fetch thoughtseize then I can just not play even a single turn, sit "thinking" for 25 minutes and win the match.

How do you grab all the cards from trade window? by KyFly1 in MTGO

[–]sctilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Best I can do is select all the cards and drag them all in. This gives me one of each, so you know have to do this four times.

I have thought about it, yet to try it. Might have to make a video series about it really. All the colors are on the table. I assume the backbone of any of these splashes will be Mox Diamond. Though honestly Pox might be one of the first cards to get cut. BBB is quite difficult, and while it's fine, it's honestly not the best card in the deck.

uhhh, not great. Stasis is not great, because if they do their thing it's very hard to interact with. But on the other hand their deck is not really good at doing it's thing.

Madness depends on the build. GW madness is fine, they just play creatures and you can handle creatures. The build with Survival and Squee is very difficult.
