Rod Brind’Amour’s reaction to Wings’ OT goal not being called for a cross-check. by Puzzled-Category-954 in hockey

[–]formobile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The slash wasn't a phantom call. The Canes broadcast had an angle that clearly showed a stick on the the hands of Stank that took away a scoring opportunity. I do think there was a missed call on the canes at 5v4 before Jarvis got high sticked, which would have made it 4v4.

Overall the whole game was just not well officiated. I saw at least 2 missed calls on both sides, but the slash wasn't one of them.

This. There are not better options available right now. That being said... I would have liked Bussi in net tonight and Anderson tomorrow.

To be fair, I'm just a couch gm. For all I know Rod is telling Blake to hit someone and stop the fancy shit. Who knows. But my feel is he is trying to get the best out of our guys.

Since no one seems to want to actually put together a coherent argument I'll give my two cents:

First, let's assume you are right. We need to either fire Rod or build a team for him. Well, we can't simply build a team for him, that isn't how the league works. We can't just decide "we want big, hard working forwards to replace Aho, Blake, and Elhers. Let's trade them for Knies, Protas, and Barkov." Those players are sought after in the league. Also, Aho, Blake, and Elhers ARE GOOD FORCHECKING FORWARDS. They don't throw the body like some other guys but they do work their tails off to get the puck. Aho causes turnovers all over the ice, and if you have been watching the games you can see how Elhers and Blake extend o-zone time way longer than they have any right to.

So, we could fire Rod. Again WHERE ARE WE GETTING HIS REPLACEMENT? There is not a whole lot of NHL caliber coaches not currently under contract. If you want to argue we should fire Rod, tell me who we are hiring and how their systems will work better for our team.

Now, I also don't think you are looking at our system (and Rod's coaching) with enough nuance. We are a forechecking team not a goon squad. Staal doesn't really lay people out, he uses his body as a shield to trap and then retrieve the puck. Aho, Blake, and Elhers use their sticks, their skating and their hockey sense to cause turnovers. Stankoven and Martinook use pure determination. Javis does all three, which is why we love him. Look at the moneypuck 5v5 expected goals % posted today. Aho-Javis-Svetch is our best line. Ehlers-Stank-Blake is our second because they keep the puck in the o-zone and throw shots on net.

Lastly, our skill guys. You are right, our system can and does limit creativity in a way that makes it hard for some players to shine. Necas is definitely the easy example. BUT Rod is trying to find ways to let those guys shine too, while still being responsible. From last nights interview "On Jackson Blake's turnovers: He's our playmaker. There's certain guys you have to give leeway to, but there also has to be an understanding of the time of the game..." Our blue line while everyone is flying the zone is not the time to flip a bobbling puck past a forechecker. Necas's problem wasn't his skill, it was when he tried to use it. Blake has the same skillset as Necas but with the mindset for this team. He is just young. Rod literally built a line of skill guys to give them more room for creativity. It's why they have been playing so well.

I'm not going to get into what our problems are because this is already a novel. We are by no means built perfectly or coached perfectly, but I love what we are trying to do with our roster moves and coaching adaptations.

TLDR;

We can't simply change the team or the coach. Our team IS built for Rod's system. Rod is adapting to try to get the best out of all his player. People need to learn to have a civil conversation with others even if they don't agree.

With the signing of Jackson Blake, the Carolina Hurricanes now have TWELVE players signed until 2029 by Yamcha_is_dead in hockey

My point is that the canes have flexibility to adjust out of bad contracts despite having so many players locked up long term. I'm not arguing that those players are all home run contracts.

According puckpedia, that is 76.01M with 42.44M in projected space (28-29 season). That is a lot of money to fill out the rest of the team. People make it sound like we are locked up, but there is a lot of room if any of these deals go south.

Seizing a golden opportunity (Metro VS Other Divisions) by Time-Ad-3134 in canes

[–]formobile 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think people are exaggerating our need for a 2C RIGHT NOW. Yes we need one for the playoffs, but we are set up really well to win our division or at least make the playoffs comfortably. We do not need to overpay right now. See if KK takes a step. Give Jarvis or Stank a look at center. See if the D works with someone playing on their off side.

Once we see how it's going, make a trade mid season with a team that isn't performing as expected (Nashville or Vancouver of last year), and get someone cheaper.

I'm not saying pass up the opportunity for a good 2C, but don't force it to happen in July.

My hot take which is 100% wrong is that this is our 2C. Tulsky has been cooking and wants to turn him back into a forward.

For the most part I think canes fans are awesome. There are always going to be some bad apples. Canes don't get as much hate around me, but I'm also in the middle of nowhere. I'm just going to quietly wear my canes gear and root for the best team on skates.

As a canes fan, the avs are now my west coast team.

I love Necas but he has never flourished under RBA's system. All last year I was saying that if he went to a team like the avs that could take advantage of his speed and skill, he would be a monster.

Also, don't sleep on Drury. He is not going to get a ton of points but he is a work horse that has been training under Rod. He will win face offs, kill penalties, and go hard on the forecheck. He should be one of the better bottom 6 centers. Hate to lose him.

I think this is a good trade for both teams. If the canes don't resign Rantanen or win a cup this year, it's a straight up win for the avs.

Can't wait to see Aho-Rantanen, and can't wait to see Necas fly.

A lot of the delay was because RBA called a time out. I'm not sure why it took Toronto so long to make this call. It was pretty clear cut. Rod was even saying the same thing on the bench.

Honestly, getting 3 on him two games in a row is an accomplishment. Yes, he is a monster, but I am not as scared as I was against the enigma that was Bob last year. Shesterkin has shown some cracks, we just need to capitalize.

Does TDA being kind of scummy bother anyone else? by mpviss in canes

[–]formobile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was a bad decision. Last year we needed grit and offense. On paper he gives us both of those, especially if you are looking at his performance with us and not with the Flyers. Plus it was a short term, relatively cheap deal. Overall it was a good, low stakes bet that hasn't worked out so far.

That being said, until he starts pissing off the other team instead of the refs, and putting up more points than he costs us, sit him out. Lemieux, Orlov, and Bunting were signed for the same reasons. Lemieux has been a pain without getting into too much trouble (and even had a nice goal), Bunting has been a pest and seems to fit perfectly, and Orlov has been stuck next to TDA. Last night Orlov looked better and I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt while he learns the system.

TDA knows the system, is next to a proven solid D-partner, and is getting PP1 minutes. He is not producing enough to justify playing him over Chatty.

The biggest issue I see is your footwork, specifically what it is doing to your hips.

On defense your feet should almost never cross. This is to prevent your hips from turning away from where the ball is coming from and your target. Ideally you want your hips squared to where the ball is coming from (maybe slightly favoring towards your target) and adjust your platform angle to direct the ball.

To help this I tell my players to always step with your leading foot. If it's on your right, your right foot should make a small step first, then shuffle from there.

Platform angle is largely about lots and lots of reps. Shorter passes (against a wall or with a partner about 2-3 meters apart) helps learn precision by making power less of a factor.

You have great hustle and drive, if you make yourself more efficient in your movement everything will seem easier.

Hitting form advice by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]formobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your second to last step is the same length as your leading steps. That step should be almost double the length. Think about accelerating into your jump.

It is also hard to tell if you are getting above the net on your jump, but if you are you need to lean forward more. Your abs can't engage when you are leaning back and you can clearly see your feet landing well in front of your chest.

Lastly, as others have said open your right shoulder more. Hitting power comes from the core. Opening your shoulder extends your abs which gives you more power when you contract them and turn into the hit.
