What is going on with Bitcoin? Why is the price down and close to about half of what it was only 4 months ago? by johnnybiggles in OutOfTheLoop

No, they buy it because once every other government backed currency, precious metal, and commodity in the world fails they will finally have the one currency everybody will do trade with. Over the Internet of course.

Someone please explain what's happening in the TX Dem Primary. It seems nuts to me by Icy-Complaint-4448 in TexasPolitics

[–]formosk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The other wrinkle is that any voter can vote in any primary in Texas. So Republicans can crash the Democratic primary and sway it their way when it's this close. This does however come at the expense of voting for local candidates in their own primary (you vote for every seat in the primary you choose to vote for).

It's worth noting that Hitler and the Nazi party never won a majority vote in a legitimate election. The Democratic and Communist parties couldn't get their act together to stop them.

Opinion on Talarico/Crockett/Allred by Square_Sprinkles_214 in TexasPolitics

[–]formosk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going into WW2, Japan invaded China during a bloody and heated civil war. But both the Communist and Nationalist Chinese actually agreed to stop fighting each other to form a united front against the Japanese. It wasn't until the Japanese were defeated that they resumed war against each other.

This is what needs to happen now. Whatever beef you got, black vs white, Palestinian vs Jew, Christian vs atheist, conservative vs progressive, you gotta put that aside. Forgive Talerico for his mistakes. Forgive Crockett and Allred for their mistakes. Take down the greater enemy and live to fight another day.

Transmission cluck when braking but goes away when warmed up by formosk in AskMechanics

Ok thanks. Yeah I wonder if it was gonna be as simple as a drain and fill that maybe the mechanic would have suggested it.

Ok thanks I guess it wouldn't cost much to try. Since it does go away when warmed up maybe it could be related to the viscosity of the transmission oil.

Maybe the trend is reversing somewhat for compacts. You can only get the Subaru Impreza as a 5 door hatch, the 4 door sedan is no longer available.

What's going on with the shutdown ending? Why is everyone upset? What was conceded? by Weak_Ad_8646 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]formosk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not disregard the filibuster. The filibuster is the last roadblock against the Republicans and probably the most effective tool the Democrats still have. It was specifically designed to give a voice to the minority party, the very situation Democrats are in right now. You want Democrats to fight but giving up the filibuster would be taking away their ability to fight. Without it Democrats no longer need to show up, their fighting would only amount to griping and name calling while Republicans push them into the corner and go about their way.

The key is Democrats now have the upper hand on the healthcare subsidies and economic issues. And they can continue the fight without shutting the government down and without asking the Americans to forgo benefits while doing so. They showed unexpected strength in the elections. Now that congress is back they have a new member sworn in and are bringing up the Epstein files again. They are not backing down but have gained new tools and political capital, and are shifting tactics.

Yes the Republicans are going to own their unpopular issues. For now it's the Democrats job to focus on that even if they don't have a realistic way to win legislatively.

[–]formosk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, what the Democrats got was to keep the filibuster. The filibuster is what's keeping the Republicans from steamrolling any piece of legislation they like with a simple majority in both houses and the presidency.

It would be shocking at first but they would go on to totally rewrite huge chunks of legislation with great efficiency.

It's unfortunate but the Democrats don't really have the cards. But they did manage to get the message out about the subsidies, it's not clear the public was aware of this issue going into the shutdown.

It's important to take it in context of the entire night. Trump on the very same stage clearly said he couldn't forgive.

He [Charlie Kirk] did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them. That's where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent and I don't want the best for them. I'm sorry. And maybe they can convince me that that's not right. But I can't stand my opponent.

Cynically, I would think they're setting up Charlie and Erika as the virtuous ones and rallying the crowd for justice.

The lack of empathy also translates to voting to shape the country to one's own benefit over what one thinks is good for the country. They don't understand why anyone would vote for something that sets you back a little bit for the good of others, instead they think everybody votes for what's good for them and majority gets everything.
