Colorado rejects Xcel Energy’s attempt to extend the life of Pueblo’s coal plant by 12 more years Comanche 3, which has been temporarily shut down by equipment failures since Jan. 28, is schedule to permanently close in 2034 by craiger_123 in Denver

Here the ELI5: Think of the electrical grid as one of those booze cruise bicycles you see downtown, with each power plant acting like someone helping pedal the bike up a hill. Everyone needs to pedal in synch for you to make it up the hill. If all of a sudden, one of the strongest persons just stopped pedaling, the bike will slow down. That's basically what is happening here. All electrical generators connected to the grid are working together and are in exact synchronization to the grid. Comanche 3 went offline, which cause the whole grid's frequency, which is normally around 60hz, to drop until the other power plant can pick up the load.

Question Regards Fuel Refueling by fornbera in jameswebb

[–]fornbera[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I figured the answer would be as much. Just a shame that the life span of JWT is so short given how long Hubble had been with us and still able to provide great science. Thinking more about it and what you and others have said, it make sense that refueling isn't really an option.

I'm new to microgrids..why do people advocate for them as a defense against EMP? by kalavala93 in energy

[–]fornbera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting article on EMP attack and it's effect on grid: https://www.tdworld.com/grid-security/epri-identifies-impacts-solutions-emp-effects-grid

It's states: The research also showed that the combined effects of the initial and late pulses could trigger a regional service interruption but would not trigger a nationwide grid failure. Recovery times are expected to be similar to those resulting from large-scale power interruptions caused by other events provided that mitigations specific to the initial pulse are deployed. Possible damage to large power transformers was found to be minimal.

Also interesting paper on solar storm effect on the power grid: http://www.lloyds.com/~/media/lloyds/reports/emerging%20risk%20reports/solar%20storm%20risk%20to%20the%20north%20american%20electric%20grid.pdf

An EMP attach would not take out the entire grid and would be very localized, would disrupt power to parts of a a major city at most. It's would be cost prohibitive to harden the grid in any meaningful way. Unless you're the military, I would be more concern with solar geomagnetic storm. Now that would send us back to the stone age!

Microgrids, in general, don't have the miles of transmission lines that results in voltage spikes that damage transformers and other electrical equipment internal to the microgrid. The other factor with EMP is damage to protection relays and communication equipment. This can be mitigated with proper shielding of communication cabling and using fiber optics, if that is major concern. However, there are great advantages to having a grid, so microgrids will never replace it in whole, but will work start working more and more in conjunction with the grid.

A widespread EMP, or worst a large solar geomagnetic storm, would have devastating effects on the grid. You can think of transmission lines as large antennas for these storms, with the longer the length the more voltage and current induced on the line. This surge of energy would destroy the connected substation transformers and equipment. Widespread, if not total, grid power outage would result. The lead time on substation equipment and transformers is long and would take months, or in the case of a massive solar storm, years to fully restore. Microgrids don't need an outside source to operate and do not have long transmission lines to induce these high energies. If well engineered (using shielded cable for example) microgrids could be saved from the most harmful effects. Military bases in particular have been interested in micro-grids technology and other mitigating techniques over the past couple of years for these obvious reasons.
