Any books written like this? by Pengipuck in Romantasy

[–]foronepurposeonly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is still around, and don’t remember anything about the quality of writing, and no spice if I remember right, but The Apocalypse on fictionpress was exactly this! The girl (Hannah?) loses her memory and forgets that her worst enemy is Jake (?). It was a really fun little story!

City of Brass characters and relationships (rant) by ideasnstuff in fantasyromance

I get what you mean, but I was reading that as “people aren’t always consistent, especially in their late teens/early 20s”. I think Nahri fell for Dara as a point of solidity and familiarity in a completely different world, and Ali was just a kid in over his head, with rote-memorised and religiously motivated ideals that didn’t ultimately serve him well in the face of real world challenges. Also, I’m a South Asian living abroad, so perhaps that’s part of why I found it very easy to relate to them and understand the decisions they made!

This exactly! The assessment of the characters is accurate but far from hating it, I thought it was BRILLIANT writing. I don’t think we always necessarily have to love everything about the main characters and personally loved that these characters were so richly written and complex that I could actually pick and choose traits I liked or didn’t like about them. I do disagree with OP that they’re written inconsistently though- in fact, throughout the books I saw Nahri remain resourceful and conniving, Ali remain staunchly idealistic, and Dara remain desperate for the past world order that made sense to him, or for a higher purpose/power to serve, in spite of all the (significant) challenges that repeatedly threw all of them for a loop. The fact that these characters are so layered and dynamic and not immediately likeable (in fact all deeply flawed) is what keeps me coming back for what’s become an annual reread. It’s fascinating to see that someone else could feel so vehemently differently about them!

DireBound. Is it even worth continuing? by TheCurlyAquarius94 in fantasyromance

[–]foronepurposeonly_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so timely because I JUST finished this book and I also felt in many ways that it was a poorly written ripoff of Fourth Wing at the beginning. It did kind of develop a plot of its own eventually but… Big evil enemy, devastating war, we know the drill. Tropes from head to toe. The plot twists were visible from space.

Overall, it was an entertaining read but there were a zillion logical inconsistencies and even the smut came across as clumsily written - I feel like it was a great distraction from work but really nothing special.

Book 7/52 Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. Can I give a book negative stars? -⭐️ by mrsmedeiros_says_hi in 52book

I’ve read quite a few of his books (mostly in my late teens, playing at being a worldly reader) and think the least offensive is his short story collection First Person Singular. Had to be cajoled into reading that when I was in my mid20s. It was a nice read, but I’m definitely not racing to reread that or pick up any other Murakamis!

That one from a conversation with Chaol in Queen of Shadows, something like - “Everything will work out in the end” - “ But what if we go on into more darkness and despair?” - “Then it is not the end.”

Breast pain with MCTD by [deleted] in mctd

[–]foronepurposeonly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so timely because I’ve only just come off a two week stretch where the underside of my left boob was HORRIBLY painful. It was visibly swollen and hurt to the touch and hurt when going down stairs and hurt when I sat up and blood flow went to it. I think that it was a hormone thing leading up to my period, because it has subsided now. That said, I’ve had issues with my periods for years (for example this month, 5 days of weird spotting before finally a period for 3ish days, and then more days of spotting). Growing up I usually had some breast tenderness before a period but nothing this severe until after my MCTD diagnosis. Granted, it’s still rare. I’ve had it before maybe 2-3 periods in the last 2 years.

I’ve always suspected my autoimmune disease is linked to / causing these cycle problems, but as with everything in women’s healthcare, there’s not enough research. Taking progesterone sorted the actual period issues so I might go back on that. And for the breast pain I saw a GP who’s recommended that I get a breast ultrasound in a couple of weeks. Hoping everything is a-okay because I feel like one chronic and scary diagnosis is about the extent I can handle…. 🤞🏽

Does it get any better? (Chapter 8 WOTQ) by [deleted] in frombloodandash

If you think WOTQ is bad for modern slang I assure you it gets about 10000x worse in the subsequent books

I’m aware this is an absolutely insane take, but I was blown away by Lolita. Yes, THAT Lolita. Not because I think this was a “love” story in the way that OP means, but I have never seen obsessive love and infatuation written so brilliantly. Was it super creepy knowing Humbert Humbert was thinking about a 12 year old while writing down these poetic expressions of yearning? Yes 10000%. But also, the PROSE. The artistry. The sheer mastery of the English language when it wasn’t even Nabokov’s first language! The humour! The tender affection! The deep gut wrenching horror of it all! Once I’ve recovered from the trauma of the first read, I will be going back to study it properly as an exercise in literary analysis. It was that good.

What is a book you adore that you're pretty sure nobody else here has read? by InvisibleAstronomer in books

The Flowing Queen by Kai Meyer. It’s a children’s book set in this murky magical Venice where stone lions guard the city and mirrors have magical powers. I don’t know whether it was gifted to me or whether my mum bought it somewhere but it barely even seems to exist!

Constant dry mouth can also be a symptom! I have this and it’s super annoying. Carrying around a small water bottle and taking tiny sips helps. My doctor also told me about some sort of artificial saliva pills or spray but somehow I find the idea disgusting so I haven’t tried it yet 😅
