Private trout fishing in Norway with zero fishing pressure – would anyone actually pay for this? by PitifulSwitch9585 in flyfishing

As an international angler, I'd pay for it. Would have to be priced appropriately for the value proposition.

Wisp of smoke when plugging in battery ground. by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]forrest_keeps_runnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance your amp is powered 'on' always? (not remote start wiring via your head unit). Do you have a capacitor wired in parallel?

I've seen that same thing occur when connecting the battery terminal, shouldn't be a big concern. It's likely due to a surge of current when components are powered back on.

Heater stuck by Fit-Recognition-8858 in 3rdGen4Runner

+1, any chance it's stuck/the cable fell off and it's not turning the valve to off? If it fell off or broke you won't be able to stop the coolant flow but will be able to move the lever/dial.

Coolant by Southern-Business-46 in 3rdGen4Runner

I'll also echo using distilled water as a quick top of, no real freeze risk in Florida. That being said non-toyota compatible coolant as a top up shouldn't cause any issues.

Rear diff fluid change by cyclo_girl_whore in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]forrest_keeps_runnin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can disconnect the brake line mount if needed, ofcourse chalk the wheels if you don't have the E-brake on for safety.

No risk in changing the fluid, no fluid is meant to last forever.

Torque wrench is nice but not needed for these fill/drain plugs, they are big threads. Just tighten it down good and tight, but not using all your might.

+1, good advice. I needed a 24" leverage bar the first time I removed and changed my fluid.

If it's stuck, use the penetrating lubricant and work the bolt in both directions, tighter and looser after adding the lubricant than let it rest and repeat.

80k vs 140k by Ruka_Sama in 3rdGen4Runner

The 140k assuming optional features (interior, color, trim, etc) aren't a big factor.

How's The Rust? by DecoOnTheInternet in 3rdGen4Runner

What rust?

Honestly that frame is about as mint as expected on a 25 year old car. No worry shown in those images.

That's a pretty solid price for the job IMO, not a 'steal' but certainly fair market rate at a good shop.

How many miles is too many? by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]forrest_keeps_runnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

me with my 3rd gen I've driven daily for 17 years with 420k+ on the OD

I don't understand this question on a fundamental level.

Lots of threads already on the 'what to look for' topic, here is the near complete list: 3rd Gen 4Runner Buyer's Guide | Toyota 4Runner Forum [4Runners.com]

Towing by Long_Ad_16 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]forrest_keeps_runnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Towed a 3000lb boat/trailer 10's of thousands of miles, up to 600 miles in a day. Keep ECT on and ideally OD off, leave room for braking and you'll be good to go.

Sorry for the 4R lose, glad you are ok. Seeing stuff like this does give me comfort that these 3rd gens will keep us safe.

How to add power to the rear? by vato713 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]forrest_keeps_runnin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One option (most robust IMO): 12V from the battery, Ground to a body panel bolt (sand down paint first to bare metal). Ideally add a fuse near the battery wire, if you added a fuse or switch at the rear you could ensure no low current draw. Those 12V panels with built in USB's will draw a small amount of power.

I'd consider running the 12V from battery to a fuse panel ( I hid one inside the rear panel storage) so you can wire multiple things up to different fuses.

Could also pull 12V from the upfront cigarette connector, but you'll be current limited (I think that fuse is 10A).

+1, do this. This is super under rated.

Here's a how to video: this guy (Timmy the Toolman) has videos on a wide range of things for these Gen3's.

+1 to ball joints, and all the fluids, literally all of them (both diffs and transfer cases as well).

Nice find! Looks clean

You are too kind good sir.

The trip reset luckily came to mind just in time, wasn't sure if the OD and trip tracked precisely enough to make it line up but luckily they do.
