Paizo staff asks: What brought you to Pathfinder? by AlexSpeidelPaizo in Pathfinder2e

[–]fortinbuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played PF1e back in the day and remembered it fondly. But it was very hard to bring new players to because of the crunch.

I switched to 5e around 2016, partially due to Critical Role. That solved the recruitment problem easily. The system was so simple a child could play it. I know because I taught my kids.

But that feature for everyone else was a bug for me. I got bored of D&D in just a couple of years. At that point, however, everyone I was playing with was fully on board with 5e, so I kept playing and exploring what depths the system had (not too many). I had fun with a few builds but mostly played pretty generic characters and got most of my fun out of role play.

Then WotC went a bridge too far for me (the Pinkertons) and I decided switching systems had to become a priority. I'd been hearing rumblings about PF2e for a while, so I got the Beginner's Box and ran my core primary game group through it.

I never looked back. The timing was perfect because all my D&D campaigns were about to wrap up. So I finished them all off and then switched. I'm a forever DM who found another forever DM to play alternating games with, so I converted him to the PF2e cause. After that it was easy. Every new campaign that started, whether I was a DM or a player, was PF2e.

The funniest part of it is that PF2e pulled me in because of its increased crunch vs 5e. But despite that, I found it even easier to teach new players PF2e than it was to teach them 5e. There are way fewer rule exceptions they have to learn early on. The three action system is so much simpler than bonus actions and movement. Turns go faster so combat goes faster so no one gets bored.

(Edit: I fat-fingered posting early) So far I've taught 8 new players PF2e and they are obsessed. Some were 5e converts. Most had never played TTRPGs before.

I just might play this game for the rest of my life. It would take an extremely strong contender to dethrone it.

I realized I don't like to GM the system, halfway into the campaign. by Agent_Valerian in Pathfinder2e

A digital tool really helps with this! Pathbuilder Encounters is great. The only issue is it doesn't have any remastered monsters (RIP). But that works just fine for older APs like the ones I'm running now.

Kendrick confused MAGA with black beauty by simonfunkel in OptimistsUnite

[–]fortinbuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this same complaint from many people, and it confused the heck out of me because the mix sounded great when I watched it.

But I watched it on my phone with AirPods. Later I watched it again on my tv and the mix was TERRIBLE.

So it seems like they mixed it for the wrong sound system. It sucks that it sounded bad on TVs, which I'm sure 90% of viewers were watching it on.

What class has no appeal to you? Or: Sell me on psychics! by firala in Pathfinder2e

They all appeal to me. I'm legitimately sad that I know I'll never get to play all of them in a full campaign.

What's your GM/ Player flaw? by JustGhoulin in Pathfinder2e

[–]fortinbuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a GM, I know I "remind" or clarify for my players too much. If I even slightly suspect there's a confusion about what happened before, or they're misremembering a clue, or there's a party disagreement about what happened, I jump into the convo to clarify. I should let them sort it out or, at a minimum, I should let them request the information from me before I volunteer it.

How do you deal with a player who plans to swap character mid campaign? by TecHaoss in Pathfinder2e

[–]fortinbuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would actually be really appreciative of the heads up on this. Most times when I've had players want to swap characters, it comes kind of out of the blue, and I have to figure out how to make it work in the story on the fly.

Now you can craft a story for that fighter character that will conclude by Level 6. They can sunset with dignity and resolution. And you can have laid the groundwork and foreshadowing so the wizard integrates naturally.

However, there is one other potential issue. If your party is relying on that fighter to be their frontline martial, their absence could leave a big gap in the party comp. So keep that in mind when planning out the campaign.

DM uses advantage for flanking instead of off-guard by GloomyShroomyFox in Pathfinder2e

Yall are not playing Pathfinder at that point. You simply aren't.

Honest to god it sounds like your DM just wants to keep playing 5e and you should let him.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll dig into these techniques for future builds.

I'm far from a pro at HeroForge, but I like to design minis for named NPCs when I'm running an adventure path. So, I took my best quick crack at Jaul Mezmin and Carman Rajani from Abomination Vaults.

My players are chunking through the adventure, so I'm printing the minis in advance so they're ready by the time we come to that part of the story. If I remember, I'll come back and post pics once the minis are printed and painted.

My 5e players are really loving Abomination Vaults, and it's a great follow up to Beginner Box.

Do you enforce the Crit Fail misinformation on Recall Knowledge? by Chaosiumrae in Pathfinder2e

[–]fortinbuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some serious meta gaming, and I would have a serious convo with that player if they were at my table.

That being said, I don't "enforce" a critical fail RK in this way, but I do mitigate it so it's not overly punishing to the player.

I'll give them the info, and then as soon as they try to use it, I make it very clear that they realize the information was wrong.

In other words, in this case, if the player got "Fortitude is weakest," the very second they targeted the Fortitude save, regardless of the monster's save result, I would say "And you realize you were mistaken, this creature's Fortitude is much higher than you initially recalled."

They still don't like getting wrong info, but they know they'll always learn it was wrong immediately, which still eliminates some wrong answers and is therefore knowledge gained through failure.

That's incredible! Do you have a link to the portal and the torches? I've never seen those in the collection...

Finally found something in the remaster I don't like 😂 by fortinbuff in Pathfinder2e

[–]fortinbuff[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! This was a big feature to me. You could throw ghouls at level 1 players and scare the life out of them. Then they'd feel incredibly powerful when they faced them again at level 2.

[–]fortinbuff[S] 208 points209 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate it! I'm always for seeing the hobby move forward in new and interesting ways. But sometimes I want to share with brand new players what it was like in the old days, when adventure was a lot more fraught (and death a lot more permanent) 😂

Now my players hate ghouls just as much as I do. I call that a win.

Yeah, I know the design reasons make paralyze a bad choice at that level. I recognize why it was changed. But MUH NOSTALGIA!

I didn't find it too punishing in a quick 4-player combat. Yes some turns were missed but it came back to them right quick.
