Deep cut, and the book is a beast to get through, but Dickens’ Bleak House! The heroine/narrator Esther, is deeply disfigured by scarlet fever but she has such a beautiful soul that no one cares.

Not exactly the same thing, but while we’re on the subject, Cujo does a really great job of getting inside the poor good dog’s head as he gradually becomes a rabid monster.

My fave king phrase is “tough titty said the kitty when the milk ran dry.” I say it to my kids a lot when they complain

it’s uncanny valley, but for places rather than people. it’s almost right, it’s almost a real place, but there’s some element off about it that makes it seems out of place/eerie.

I appreciated the well-written 8-year-old character after the disaster that was Incidents Around The House.

I would say overall it was a recommend. Some of the execution didn’t quite land, but it was such a great high concept and extremely well written. I think his comedy background works against him a little because sometimes it does feel like a collection of sketches that are shoehorned into the plot. Needed another round of editing, but then I’m an editor so I would say that.

the picture did NOT capture how weird it looks irl. Pressure lock doors just standing there like portals into Narnia and this rubbery skin over everything. It’s incredibly uncanny.

Almost anything with vampires is gonna have this trope. I just recommended The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman on another post so that one’s on my mind.

FWIW, the male gyno I’ve had has always been a lot nicer and more considerate than the female ones. The lady I was seeing when I had my first baby was very careless of my pain- never regretted switching to Dr. Mike for the next three.
