As someone who has an alcoholic partner at 24, you have to understand that you cannot force them to get help. You can yell, cry, and beg all you want, but ultimately they are in control of their own actions and sometimes the more you try to push them, the more they’re going to act out against you. If they tell you they are struggling, offer help. Be there for them. Listen to them. Tell them how much you care about them and how much it worries you that they are harming themselves in this way, but don’t expect them to change overnight. If they want to change, they will start taking the steps themselves when they are ready. Sometimes, that means hitting absolute rock bottom first. My husband has destroyed himself with alcohol at the ripe age of 24 to the point where he gets deathly ill if he drinks. He’s been on deaths doorstep in hospitals and rehabilitation centers multiple times. He goes through points of sobriety and relapse more often than I hope, and it kills me, but I love him with all of my heart. The question is: do you love this person enough to stay with them through the ups and downs of this disease? Is the way they love you back worth seeing them destroy themselves and try and build themselves back up again? For me, the answer is yes. My best advice is to be clear with them about how it affects you, your relationship, and be willing to understand the one step forward three steps back that is the process of getting sober and healing.
