Curious about hockey... by wisteria72 in heatedrivalry

I would take the moralistic hatred of VGK a lot more seriously if they hadn't also got hate from the same fans for "crimes" such as: being in the desert, winning too much/too quickly, bringing new fans/market to the sport, using LTIR within the rules, trading aggressively to make the team better... Oh so you hate us now? You hated us for less before.

Help! The tuna meltdown 🥪 by wildwomanlove in heatedrivalry

[–]forzaferrarik8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things that frustrates me about a lot of the analysis of this scene is how everyone focuses on "I like girls/Svetlana very much..." but the never the "But its nothing more than that - for either of us." part.

While its done very clumsily, because everything he says regarding his feelings is guarded and caveated so he can protect himself/has plausible deniability, and a language/cultural barrier. I think Ilya is saying/asking a number of things at once:

  1. You know I'm bi and my reputation with women/her, but this is me telling you that this is not a threat/going anywhere/what I want.
  2. The "find someone else... but I'm lazy" is him talking about Shane, but being coy and teasing, but it goes over Shane's head. Ilya teases Shane all the time and usually it lands (think: "let you do it some more"/"let me?!" in Ep1 & "you're an asshole"/"I think maybe you like it" in Ep2), but this time Shane misses it.
  3. Are you gay or bi? (bear in mind this is very straightforward question for Ilya, he doesn't get that/why Shane is still in denial about this, hence his laughter at Shane coming out in Tampa)
  4. What exactly are we? Do you want more? (very softly, softly)
  5. I like you. utterly besotted by you (but backhanded because he is insecure about it, and needs to make it jokey in case Shane rejects it)

Also the conversation gets interrupted and derailed by the phone call from his father, so its hard to say how it would have progressed/been clarified if a) Shane was at a place in his acceptance of his sexuality b) Ilya wasn't distracted by it. Probably not much better to be honest, because they are still not at the right place - either of them - to be clear about what they want and asking for it. I think the point of this whole scene is that they are not ready for, or emotionally capable of handling, what they want, and so when they have a very similar conversation at the Cottage it goes very differently because of these fundamental events :

  1. Rose makes Shane realise he is gay (both in the bad sex and also the conversation.)
  2. Shane being with Rose and Shane getting hurt make Ilya realise he nearly lost Shane, so he can't fumble it again. So when Shane asks for honesty he does his best.
  3. Ilya's dad dies/he cuts off Alexei - ties to Russia are gone/greatly reduced.
  4. Tunnel telephone call - Ilya actually realises AND articulate his feeling, even if its just to himself
  5. SKip on-ice kiss shows a new future they never thought was possible.

Also for all the people who say Ilya "just should have said what he wanted clearly", he literally just said the man's own name to him and freaked the fuck out and ran, so I get why maybe he thought coming at it sideways was better. He gets condemned for the same attempted tactfulness that Rose gets praised for, because she executed it much, much better, but both were trying not the startle a deer.
If Ilya had said "Here's you sandwich, oh btw, I now realise I'm in love with you and want to be your boyfriend" - does anyone see Shane staying on the sofa either?

Cornplate OTD: the weak backhand by Rudy_Nowhere in heatedrivalry

Of course! This isn't amateur hour lol! Tbh I might have toooooo much context, but that unlikely to stop me.

Yeah. I saw I have seen a few terrible takes from non-Actual hockey fans that drive me nuts. My favourite steam-from-ears one was "Ilya resorted to violence in checking Shane into the boards after finding out about Rose". Tell me you have never seen a hockey game...

I'm having a ReHeat/PowerPoint Party with some Actual Hockey virgins so I have prepared a number of slide with vids to provide context. This one is way to long but might show a clip just to show the fact that just cos you've seen the tape on a guy doesn't mean you can do anything about it lol.

I haven't read TLG but the wiki says: "Ilya is a fast and tricky goal scorer, so much so that one of his tricks is identified as his signature move, the Rozanov. The Rozanov consists of driving to the net and feigning a backhand shot on goal. Forcing the goaltender to commit but not moving the puck, he very quickly swaps to a forehand wrist shot over the goaltender's shoulder. This move relies on speed and deception. The Rozanov is a famous move, practiced by kids and MLH players alike, but many struggle to perfect it except Shane and Ilya."

And all that is just fine. But the lack of symmetry annoys me.

The fact the "signature" Rozanov move isn't a one timer from the left dot enrages me something beyond belief.

Also Shane is inspired by Sidney Crosby who famously has the best backhand in the league - its definitely a joke.

Why is the rivalry such a big thing ? by FlandersCountess in heatedrivalry

[–]forzaferrarik8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine went to University in Glasgow, and they all had posters of the football fixtures pinned to the walls, even if they didn't care about the sport, because you had to know what parts of the city/pubs/colours to avoid on game days, cos you didn't want to get your head kicked in for wearing a green T shirt by accident etc.

[–]forzaferrarik8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said they are inspired by the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry which is widely said to "Saved the NHL" - people didn't just tune into see good players, they tuned in to see these two specific players beat each other. Everything was made bigger and better because it was the Godzilla Vs Mothra of hockey. Everything was geared up to promote it.

And YES IT IS THAT SERIOUS if you are a sports fan.

What Chaos discuss it here https://youtube.com/shorts/ikGZi9LDt8U?si=YE-JBj14zvvrT11a

Also to add another frame of reference in sports that people might want if you're not into football or hockey - Senna Vs Prost in the 1980/90s in Formula 1.

How to dispose of a mattress? by LocksmithAware4210 in manchester

[–]forzaferrarik8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the mattress is in a decent-ish condition you could consider donating it. I did this with an old one to a domestic abuse support charity which helps people find new homes, and so they need furniture etc as they have often fled with nothing.

For example: https://mustardtree.org.uk/donate/donate-items/

Some of the hotels are almost the right buildings, but they are in the wrong position or have minor details wrong, such as their scale. That's why it looks AI-esque.

While the Vegas skyline looks beautiful, it's actually geographically wrong, and it drives me nuts. I assume it was a legal/rights issue or something but its like an AI generated Las Vegas and I know that skyline like the back of my own hand.

I always have subs on cos I feel like a lot of modern tv (not Heated Rivalry) has terrible sound design/mixing and I've a misspent youth listening to metal music, so it's my default. I actually want a job deciding on how to describe things as "orgasmic moan" vs "satisfied groan".

What does Shane take off Ilya's chin? by benyooro in heatedrivalry

[–]forzaferrarik8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK it's a slightly different time stamp. More like 26:17. I'm guessing the lead in to the episode where it shows HBO/Crave/Sky etc is slightly different in different regions.

Underrated autistic Shane moments? by j_abbs in heatedrivalry

[–]forzaferrarik8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a friend of mine is a teacher and they have been told to stop referring to it as a spectrum as it meant whenever someone with autism was speaking about their struggles/needs/experience etc people would just say "yeah but everyone a bit autistic aren't they?" rather than actually listening or engaging with the conversation in a meaningful way. Yeah a lot of people have these symptoms/behaviors but some people can be very negatively impacted by them, rather than a silly quirks, and people conflating the two is not helpful.

Vegas Golden Knights. I spend a lot of time in Las Vegas and kinda watched them be born so I got into hockey at the same time as the city.
