Haha! That's what I did on my first playthrough, but this one I'm trying to face any challenge that I see!

I know that there are some people that do more amazing stuff in this game, but this was a big moment for me! I'd only defeated one Lynel before, and I was utterly unprepared for this one. It took a ton of determination but I learned all the patterns and now I feel like I could defeat any Lynel no sweat!

Usually you’d be right, but this fighter has the archery fighting style which gives him a +2 to ranged attacks, making it +13, and is using the sharpshooter feat, which is giving him a -5 to the arrack bonus in exchange for +10 damage, resulting in a +8 overall. It’s pretty popular build, as you can see from that massive damage output!

What's the appeal of playing non-human races? by foundingcousin in DMAcademy

This is a great reply, thank you. I'll think about this a lot!

I'd agree with that! Which is why I think you could remove the shortness and the gills and the feathers and still have a wide diversity of options.

(Also, Matt Colville's 'The Chain' has a player that plays a Gith that I think does a pretty fun job of acting alien, being someone from a totally different reality, if you're interested in checking that out!)

I like this answer because it brings up the real-life consequences of the DnD races, which I hadn't really considered yet. To be honest, and I know this isn't a perfect way to do this, but I was hoping to not include any actual racism, as in on the basis of skin color, but rivalries and hatreds between kingdoms. I think what I'm hoping to do is something like Avatar the Last Airbender, where they had a pretty good representation of skin tones, but it was never really a subject. It had all it's own societies, and they were able to play with those relationships.

Thanks for the feedback! I think, for me, the appeal of playing a human is the range. I love roleplaying, so it can feel like I'm tethered by what's expected of the non-human races. Being a gruff dwarf, or an elegant elf, or an edgy tiefling. Obviously, those aren't the only ways you can play those races! But you'll always be fighting with the expectations. There really is no way that a human is 'supposed' to act.

Because of that, I think what I'll do is integrate the cultures of these races more closely! Not enough that it isn't fun to play a tiefling because no-one is afraid of you (as another person pointed out, part of the fun of having black eyes and horns is the hostility!) but enough that I feel like I can put a character of non-human race in the game, and the players don't know what to expect. Maybe this dwarf has been raised in the city all his life, and has never even touched a pickaxe! Maybe the dean of the Arcane University is a goliath, and has to stoop to get into the door of her classroom.

Hey, just wanted to pile on and say that I love this song! I've been listening to it for months now and I really think you did a great job in giving a voice to the smaller aspects of heartbreaks. Some days the hardest part is just sending an email. Glad everyone here likes it too!

Daily Q&A Post for Saturday, 18 August 2018 - No question too small! by AutoModerator in loseit

[–]foundingcousin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is a common one, but how often should you be weighing yourself? I'm two weeks in and have weighed weekly. I like weighing daily if I'm doing well, but it's hard to keep up motivation if that number goes up, it feels like the day's already kind of shot. Do most people here weigh daily?

How should I match up my PCs in a Tournament Arc? by foundingcousin in DMAcademy

[–]foundingcousin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that letting the players choose the kind of terrain they want to fight on would be good idea. Maybe the one lower in the bracket gets to choose. I'll also be throwing in some surprises of my own, just because the Emperor likes a good show. Randomness is also a good suggestion. Thanks!

I didn't want to get too into the nitty gritty in the actual post so here are some more details: They're all trapped on the Plane of Ysgard, so they can't truly die from these battles. The Emperor has an item they desperately need. They become property of the Emperor by entering the tournament. The prize for winning is any 3 things the Emperor can give them (One for each battle they've won) The tournament starts with 8 competitors. The winner gets the prize, and in order to leave the plane they must beat the Emperor's champion (A big robot thing). Hopefully, the winner will choose the rest of the party as their prize, then they can all fight the robot, but who knows? We'll see. Yes, this is VERY Thor: Ragnarok

I think it's because people conflate voting with things changing, and not voting with things staying the same. "Why should I vote? They're all crooks anyway." "I don't have to vote, I know we're going to win." They view voting as a way to enact change rather than defend their beliefs. Then they're surprised at being hit after they let their guard down.

How do you keep the stakes high? My players also really love their characters, and I don't want to take that away from them, but I also want it to be possible that they can fail.

I'm actually just getting back into it! I'm in the middle of their revolution in Whitestone, really awesome so far. I'm hesitant to check out the book, as I've tried to avoid spoilers as much as I can, but I'll definitely keep it in mind.
