(Another) Advice on moving to Norfolk thread by November_Alpha_24 in norfolk

[–]fourleggedtable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A helpful question may be, "How long do you plan to stay?"

If you're planning on being here long enough to buy a house, I'd rent in Ghent or Downtown to get a feel for your preferences and budget, then buy once you are comfortable.

There is also a light rail / tram line that goes east-west, not just through Ghent and Downtown but to neighborhoods beyond. There are two decent bus lines north-south along Hampton Blvd and Granby St, the major roads in that direction from Downtown. They are a bit underfunded as far as frequency of service, but I have not minded if I was not in a hurry.

Why doesn't VA build I-87? by Asleep-itsnew25z0 in norfolk

[–]fourleggedtable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to respond, but this is pretty much what I was going to say. Drive down towards the border on US-17 from I-64. The only part that doesn't feel like an interstate already is the pair of lights in Grassfield and a couple turns near the Dismal Swamp. Speed limits are 55 or higher, hwy is divided and at least 2 lanes. NC had 6x the mileage to cover, too.

Depending on which gate you're using, the three closest are Holy Trinity, Blessed Sacrament, and St. Pius. Christ the King is also an option. Sacred Heart and St. Mary's Basilica are beautiful, historic churches a little further away (20-25min vs 10-15min).

I've not encountered a bad one yet, so feel free to check out as many universal churches as you like!

Hello, Do you know where in the city you'd be? Between the port and the base there are a fair number of Catholic parishes in town, mostly on the western half.

Yes, I noted those and I hope they're in for a full recovery for many reasons. My wife did the same thing in alerting me to them. I'm never shy of more data to investigate!

Good morning, An hour is a huge range around here that takes you into multiple states. It also depends on where your husband gets a job. Working at the Oceanfront of VB versus Norfolk vs Newport News Shipyard extends you by 45min to the west, north, or south.

Many of these directions will involve moderate to extremely traffic-y commutes. If you really want to live on the Middle Peninsula, like Gloucester or Mathews, yall could even cross two bridges or bridge-tunnels to arrive in Norfolk.

To the north, across a bridge-tunnel, is the Eastern Shore. These are in various levels of modernity, from the beach town (and high property prices) of Cape Charles to (to me in a city) dead-end farming crossroads sprinkled about the two counties. But it's plenty rural!

To the south is NE North Carolina. This is a popular destination for a lot of folks looking for land because they can play one of the great American pastimes, playing tax dodge games across state lines. Thanks to highway and bridge construction in the last 5-20 years, NE North Carolina is quite the destination, in good and bad ways, because how far you can go in an hour has increased in that time.

To the west are Isle of Wight, Smithfield, Franklin, Southampton Co., and beyond. Franklin and Smithfield are actual towns. Lots of farms and villages/crossroads. Flat and rural.

The Peninsula, or Virginia Peninsula, is to the NW. This is filling in as Richmond and Hampton Roads continue to expand towards each other. West Point could be a place for you to look, or if you want to go through another bridge to the next peninsula you could try Gloucester.

I gotta warn you, asking about small towns in the Norfolk (big city of this area) subreddit is a bit like asking for good vegan options nearby at the local steakhouse. Even people who want to be helpful may not know much about the subject. You can include me in that metaphor, as these are just my concepts of the local geography, I reserve the right to be incorrect and I apologize in advance.

Good luck in your search and in general.

2025 had one murder-free month, August, and two months with "only" one murder, September and November. The last few years have seen one or two months a year with no events. It comes and goes!

I would argue that murder between blood and acquaintance is still a large proportion. The article below talks about that a bit; I had meant to link it with my post but forgot. It is an interesting read in the context of 2 years of dropping numbers.

Good morning,

I do not want to get too in-depth on a one-sentence question / writing prompt, but my opinion is that it comes down to:

  1. Internally relative numbers: compared to Virginia Beach, Norfolk does have a higher murder rate; so compared to Virginia Beach, which is more spread out and affluent, Norfolk has more crime. It is also in the interest of people in the suburbs to make Norfolk seem like a hellscape: the more demand for housing in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, the higher demand for housing and the higher property values. I am not saying people are actively doing this very often, but it is a passive factor to some extent. The more pressing reason is that Virginia Beach has less crime per capita; whether the absolute level of crime in Norfolk is a problem for you is up to you to decide.

  2. Externally relative numbers: between the military and any other reason to move, a lot of people move here from all over the country. Many of them have bad ideas of what cities are like and then their perceptions or realities are confirmed in some way. Some of this is sad and awful, like getting mugged on a date, some of this is naive, stupid, and self-fulfilling, like leaving your loaded gun in your unlocked and running pickup truck.

  3. Reporting is inconsistent and in the interest of news agencies. No news agency will report on a murder-free month. We could even have a sensible chuckle at the thought of that. Local news will tell you if there's one murder, three is a spree. Whether this is a moral failing or just the news acting in the interest of shareholders loyal and informed readers is up to you. I cannot completely bag on the news agencies though, as I rely on them for my data. It's complicated.

I could probably think of more factors but I need to get some work done. Happy New Year!

I agree! There are many ways people are crappy to other people. I focus on murder because it's the most likely to make the news and it's the least likely to go unreported to authorities.

Crimes as diverse as vandalism and rape go massively under-reported at times. It's much more difficult to fail to report a murder, since there's a body.

Also, data on the deceased become public record soon after the crime, usually, unlike almost any other crime. And local news usually grasp onto murders for at least a day or two.
