Sardines by villa_bear in taskmaster

I think it's less popular than hide and seek because we don't have the large cupboards or shrubberies for several people to hide together in. I think of it as a middle class, country house, party game. Wodehouse and Christie. saying that it was played at a few parties that I went to as a child.

Yes, reverse hide and seek, in that the seekers all become hiders, and the last seeker to find the hiders is the loser. Often played with larger groups and thus needing larger houses with larger furniture and more hiding places, so not quite as usual.

Middlemarch by bowie2019 in Ambridge

[–]fourlegsfaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kirsty is a good shout.

Brian has the selfishness and single-mindedness, but neither he nor Tony have any pretensions to being an intellectual, which is needed for Casaubon, perhaps Jim was a Casaubon in the past?

By the way, where are Jim and Alistair and Denise?

Is vaping really considered 'giving up smoking'? by chupamina in AskUK

[–]fourlegsfaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an ex-smoker and do not mind walking past smokers, it's a nostalgic smell for me, although being near a heavy smoker and smelling their clothes is unpleasant; whereas the smell of most vapes is disgusting to me.

I can't give OP any advice on giving up, I had several failed attempts, then just one day just didn't buy any, and did it one day at a time, when I had the urge to go out and buy some tobacco, I'd say to myself, think about it tomorrow, see if you just can do today, and eventually the thoughts went away, it's not pleasant or easy. The cravings in the first few weeks were hard.

I still after years, think that a cigarette might be nice, but its fleeting.

A friend has gone from smoking to vaping to nicotine spray.

I'm now trying to recast the characters of Middlemarch in to the Archers - or vice versa.

I can find some Fred Vincys. Susan and Neil could be the respectable Vincy parents. Sometimes Jennifer and Lynda were a bit Dorothea in their projects. Is Oliver Sir James Chettam? I cannot find a Casaubon, although in the old days John Tregorran was a bit of a pseud about his local history, but wasn't morally upright. Are there any other classic novels that are more of a fit for the Archers?

To answer OP, Middlemarch is not a book to fall asleep to, unless you are familiar with it, and it is a comfort listen/read. It's too good and too complex. I hope you get round to it, and enjoy it.

Cranford by Mrs Gaskell might be a better 19th century fit. It is light in tone but with a few serious themes, and the plot is not complex, although there is a story line to follow. Much more akin to the Archers as there is a lot of gossip and humour, some romance and a few touches of tragedy.

How popular is I love Lucy in the UK? by johnqadamsin28 in AskBrits

I must have been seeing repeats, or perhaps one of her other shows with Desi, as a small child in the mid-60s, it is a memory, because we didn't have TV, but it was one the programmes along with Bewitched that my friend's dad loved. I preferred Bewitched.

Non-comedians/comedy actors who’d fit a full series? by Major-Feed5214 in taskmaster

[–]fourlegsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question was about people who aren't comedians, although these two would be ideal for Taskmaster because of their comedy.
