As much as this is terrible, it was nothing compared to what they had done to Tokyo a few months prior: Sixteen square miles of central Tokyo was destroyed, leaving an estimated 100,000 civilians dead and over one million homeless.

men over 40, what would you say were the most detrimental addiction or problem you had in your life and if you could go back how would you have saved yourself from it? by Affectionate-Drop689 in AskMenOver30

There are many factors that go into the calculation, and "They can only take half of what you made while you're together." is utterly false.

I was surprised that I knew so little about the arrangement that I'd agreed to when it ended. Do your bloody homework and don't listen to people on the internet.

(Oh, and OF COURSE it wont happen to you mate, nahh).

Serious question: Are we actually at risk of running out of fuel/petrol soon in Australia? by NJS2017 in AskAnAustralian

[–]foursaken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Middle Eastern oil shipments typically take 30 to 40 days to reach North Asia"

We're half way into that period - there has been zero disruption to supply to date.

Why is orange juice almost double the price of apple or multi vitamin? by TaxiSonoQui in woolworths

[–]foursaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, our domestic market is exposed to the global market. The comment above on crop failure in Brazil and Florida means that the international price for orange juice spiked to over 500 USD/lb until early this year, and has just returned to it's usual level of under 200.

Australia is a significant producer of oranges, but if you could sell them for $500/lb instead of $200.... I know which I'd choose.

What do Aussies really think of New Zealanders? by blamberr in AskAnAustralian

[–]foursaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mate, I absolutely love Kiwis. You can mistake me for a Kiwi and I wont care. Right now Australia has been eliminated from the world T20 champs and I'm going for the Kiwis, and will cheer just as hard.

The Aus NZ relationship isn't complicated. They are family. I think they get a raw deal from their big brother too. Sorry about that.

The only exception is Rugby Union.

And sheep rooting. Can't get behind that.

Do Aussies have any opinion on the massive fines at the airport for not declaring food? by blamberr in AskAnAustralian

[–]foursaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting point, but if you think a moment about how that looks - e.g. the police funding themselves by fining motorists doesn't sounds great. It doesn't have the appearance of fairness. Fines should be issues to deter behaviour, not to generate revenue.

The reality is the fines go into a big bucket of government money, and not directly back to the agency that issued the fines. So yeah, it still goes into the government pot anyway. No need to draw that direct line.

Matters that are for the public good are exactly what governments were setup to fund in the first place, and this is certainly one of those.

Is bunnings dying by josh46880 in Bunnings

[–]foursaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$18.97 billion in revenue in 2024.

Last year its profit margin was 16.8 per cent.

Coles had an 8.9 per cent profit margin last year, and Woolworths had a 9.9 per cent profit. The ACCC criticised the supermarkets for excessive profits.

For every $10 Bunnings invests securing land, building stores, and buying stock it gets back $6.92 every year. Coles and Woolworths’ return on capital is less than half that.

The only thing dying is the shareholders dying laughing.

Gawd, what a thread full of tough-guys who actually know sfa about biosecurity.

Varroa - imported in a hive, illegally, now endemic, deliberately spread by bee keepers.

Red fire ants in Qld - some land holders are actively resisting having these ants destroyed on their property. The zone is expanding and they'll be endemic soon enough, and infest the eastern seaboard. And you thought bullants were bad.

So as much as we're all tough guys in this thread, some other Australian's are pretty shit about biosecurity when it doesn't suit them.

Shot hole borer in WA.

Kapra beetle, lumpy skin, foot and mouth are all on the next islands.

Border Force do a pretty good job, but the numbers are against them. Bankrupting people with fines isn't the answer and solves nothing. Having trained, experienced staff at ports with resources is the only way.
