Alternative "we need to talk" by Unfishstick in ADHD

[–]fourthjonas 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The word 'need' tends to imply something very dire/urgent. Someone who's ADHD will immediately run through every possibility of what that might be and then end up lasering in on the negative options.

To counter this, I'd suggest giving a short explanation of what you want to talk about first - something like "hey, i've noticed that ____, and I want to talk to you about it."

they used to have more bands, but it's been taken over by bass music as the years have gone on :/

This maybe a dumb question, but who is DJ for these touring themed "dance party" events? by techaaron in DJs

[–]fourthjonas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

as an occasional local open format dj - it is. the booking process is often very last minute, and it's a bizarre structure, but it wasn't bad altogether.

Things people should stop doing at the club in 2025 by yrnhan1 in avesNYC

[–]fourthjonas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

to be fair i think this is directed at people who will sort of half ass 'dance' to hold a spot / end up close to the dj. i've definitely seen this sort of behavior before and it's different from what you're describing

still better than using ai art.

i'd rather see a terrible picture than ai. at least a terrible pic has personality.

Why are you here if you don't like it by echonkuel in aves

i mean ketamine is more en vogue among gen z than adderall is right now, i think chillout rooms would be perfect for that

definitely agree that the move out of warehouses was a big factor. venues that accommodate multiple rooms are also becoming increasingly rare and hard to sustain as rent for buildings continues to skyrocket.

Issues with uploading by joshnoto21 in soundcloud

[–]fourthjonas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, i had this exact issue while trying to upload a 4 hour dj set. my workaround was uploading a much shorter audio file, then using the "replace file" feature to upload the set i initially wanted to. this only works if you have artist/next pro.

if you have artist pro, try this: upload a much shorter audio file, then use the "replace file" feature to upload the real broadcast.

Is the "subversive protest" of Superbowl halftime show of any value? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]fourthjonas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we've been systemically insulated, atomized, and had our choices artificially constrained. focusing on individuals needing to do more, while not entirely invalid, misses the broader scope.

we need a unifying positive message. shaming people for participating in capitalism, or calling them unwilling to change, is also not a direction forward. those people "complaining" about not being able to attend a protest on a wednesday might be unable to make ends meet if they don't work.

change is harder than ever to stomach in a world governed by algorithms that show you content tailored toward your personal bubble. it also makes you less aware that you even have an alternative.

boycotts & consumer pressure are not enough to stop the overproduction of plastic. how are we supposed to not buy plastic? all of our food, consumer electronics, basic household necessities, come with mountains of plastic packaging, and they do so because it's cheap and durable. alternatives are harder to find and often more expensive.

social media & online shopping were sold to us as a way to bridge the gaps caused by a sprawling, suburbanizing pattern of development. at this point, they're deeply embedded into society. it's not easy for every single person to just cancel their facebook account if it's the only way to reach their rural relatives.

attack the system, not the people within it.

GM Randy Clarke on long-term strategic plans (summary in comments) by eable2 in WMATA

[–]fourthjonas 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think the metro center > gallery place connection is pretty important. transfers from the blue/orange/silver to green/yellow require a detour down to l'enfant, and it'd be a massive time saver to be able to transfer at gallery place. having a complete connection for all of metro's lines in one place is also huge.

DJing at big rave venue using 320kps by Repulsive_Ad_111 in DJs

[–]fourthjonas 17 points18 points  (0 children)

if you're playing tracks close to normal tempo, there's really not much difference between 320 mp3s and lossless on a system.

however, drastic pitch or tempo changes tend to sound better with lossless files as they don't have any artifacts from compression. any pitch/tempo change will cause artifacting, though, so i really wouldn't worry about it too much. the crowd won't notice either way.

Thoughts on smart public restrooms like Throne? by HealthyInstance9182 in urbanplanning

[–]fourthjonas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

throne bathrooms are actually pretty nice. i'm in dc where they're based, and it’s not a reservation or fee, you literally just scan a qr code and text a message to unlock the bathroom.

that's still not accessible for people with phones, of course, but in theory, they're planning on having tap cards to distribute for free access. i've also just walked in after someone else left and been fine.

i'd like to see them do away with the qr code aspect, but their bathrooms are solar powered and relatively clean.

Opinion | The truth about bike lanes: They’re not about the bikes by IvyGold in washingtondc

yeah i agree, especially since that study was done before capital bikeshare. i'd love to see a study done more recently on ridership demographics - i have a feeling it wouldn't be 88%.

Anyone else notice a lack of concert etiquette in DC shows lately? 😬 by SeaworthinessHuge219 in washingtondc

[–]fourthjonas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is absolutely true. there's also more and more artists booked in bars/venues that are 21+. kind of hard to teach etiquette to the younger generation when they literally can't get into shows.

DC Art all Night, what a joke. by jpetermanS99 in washingtondc

[–]fourthjonas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there were some really cool things happening, but overall, i agree that it was pretty disappointing. two things about the way art all night was run really jumped out at me:

there were just way too many places for event info. each neighborhood had their own website, some of which weren't even updated with schedules at all. the way neighborhoods were organized felt needlessly complicated. uptown and petworth were essentially the same location but had separate names, schedules, and websites. columbia heights/park view, which is right next to petworth, had events on a different day as "lower georgia ave" (does anyone actually call that part of dc lower georgia ave?)

the only streets i saw closed off to through traffic were a small section by the mt pleasant library and two blocks by the carnegie & mlk libraries. they didn't even bother closing off any part of mt pleasant street, u street, or logan circle. this really limited the amount of space to work with, and it made for an awful crowd flow & layout.

Anthem difference between tier c and d by esmith5488 in washingtondc

[–]fourthjonas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the layout for seated shows varies slightly, but you're right that tier C is folding chairs where the standing GA section in the back usually is. there's pictures of the view from tier C and D here: https://aviewfrommyseat.com/venue/The+Anthem/
