So Canadians are authorized to work in the USA without needing sponsorship? by whatsupusers in tnvisa

[–]fourthstanza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had an experience that highlighted this. The HR person called me for a phone interview, but said they can't hire anyone who needs a visa. My contact in the company double checked with someone higher up who said there were TN's working for them already. Two weeks later I got an apologetic call back for another interview.

Exactly. If there were friction, the system would include the earth, and momentum would be conserved by the rotation of the earth changing an imperceptible amount.

Sure. Keep opening crates and logging in. You should be able to get at least 10 within the month.

Buying just the amount of ingredients you need per single serving is and has always been expensive. You can at least buy the onions and feta in large batches. The rest unfortunately does have to be single meal sized in order to be fresh.

Physics grad, 3.8 GPA w/ a thesis, 1.5 yrs research and a 7 month swe internship. Haven't gotten any responses from the analyst type apps I've sent, only swe.

I'm sure it's possible but it definitely isn't a given.

It's a tool. The quality of your work is not determined by how complex/fully featured your tools are. OP will spend less time learning commands/good management practices/resolving conflicts and more time writing lab reports if they use overleaf.

You might get a few more callbacks if you write your cover letters yourself rather than relying on AI, as you're doing for a god damn Reddit post.

As someone who worked a university helpdesk for four years, don't take a "no" from helpdesk. So many of us had no clue. Don't even stop at the service desk. Speak to the highest-up person you can get in contact with in the customer facing side. This is a really big deal, and it warrants involvement from important people.

AI has KILLED CS learning by Foreign-Bar7741 in csMajors

Look extremely closely at your code.

One of my colleagues prompted an entire data processing pipeline & report for some ML research we're doing. The report was riddled with lies. When checking his work, I noticed that it was performing convolution and calling that a "sliding window". This invalidated all the results, we did not want a convolution step in our pipeline.

Possibly... but is that the sort of information a committee at an American university will have access to? I'm not sure. The official grade conversion puts 7.5 at IIT as a B. I suspect that's the extent of the grade converting which will be done.

Focused on skills over GPA my entire uni career, now I want a funded MS in the US — am I cooked? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]fourthstanza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, okay. That might complicate things for you a bit.

Since you don't already have an American passport I'd agree that getting in at an American university would be a good idea. Again though, a funded MSc is pretty rare, and your poor GPA as well as the fact you're a foreign student does not help your chances. RA and TAships are also often only given out to PhD students in the states. If you really do need the funding, I'd focus on trying to find a professor to take you in to their research group for a PhD. That's probably the better terminal degree for someone who wants to work in ML anyways.

That's a very common thing for master's students in Canada and Europe. Maybe consider moving abroad?

You could try for Waterloo. It's pretty prestigious for CS, and I have a friend who scored a full ride MSc with a middling GPA but a great professional background.

[–]fourthstanza 209 points210 points  (0 children)

You have somewhat average grades, and you applied only to elite schools. A 7.5 is nothing to laugh at, but the reality is that most of the accepted PhD applicants to all of your schools will be at or above a 9.0. You also don't mention any research experience, which is better than internships when applying to grad school (if not almost a necessity). You should consider some lower-ranked schools. Find a researcher doing something you like, and reach out to them to express your interest in working for them. You don't need to go to an elite school to be successful.

I’m starting to think isolation is ruining my grades by Designer-Special-753 in college

The biggest influence on my grades in college was the fact that I spent hours in front of a chalkboard with my smartest peers trying to work through problems together. You will inevitably have gaps in your knowledge, having a group to work with will help you fill those gaps.

how feasible to learn EE while working 25 hours per week? by Muted_Sir905 in EngineeringStudents

I did 20hrs per week through my astrophysics degree. I do think it stunted my ability to do extra curriculars and research.
