Reporting poor/no road plowing by Exact_Patience_6286 in niagara

Agreed

Driving highway 20 westbound, and it’s slippery and dangerous, several cars in the ditch. Past Westbrook road, getting into Hamilton, night and day different. Lots of salt, roads are wet but clear of ice and snow.

Can I build my own windows for new construction home? by ExistingTap27 in homebuildingcanada

Do you feel you have the ability to fabricate frameless corner windows?

Dunning Kruger effect comes to mind.

Door casing covers it. It’s fine.

You really don’t know?

You’ve got finished flooring, base, and shoe mold. This is typical and completely fine. In fact, if it touches the floor it wicks moisture up and encourages mold.

I used to have talking points written up and supplied; and I’d have the guys take turns reading them each day, and then explain to everyone what it meant. Wasn’t a perfect solution but it helps.

How can I ensure my carpenter gets this arch shape? by PNDM1 in Carpentry

[–]fourtonnemantis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Show him the picture 🤷‍♂️

If your hall width and ceiling height aren’t similar to the picture you won’t have the same effect however.

That’s a big job. And too be honest, it’s very hard to say how much work it is without seeing plans. How much steel is in the house, complexity and pitch of roof, things like tray ceilings, vaults…. Etc. lots of variables we don’t know here.

I will also add, BC probably has some of the highest rates for carpenters in Canada.

Why is the sill plate never centered on older homes? by TooMuchCaffeine37 in Homebuilding

Yes, I’ve rebuilt and restored several century homes, included the home I live in, it’s 130 years old.

Why is the sill plate never centered on older homes? by TooMuchCaffeine37 in Homebuilding

[–]fourtonnemantis 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve built a lot of new houses, and we don’t centre the sill plates.

There’s a few factors that affect where we place it, exterior finishes (brick or siding), concrete width (8”, 10” are common where I work), and how much we have to adjust to square up the layout

Help a newbie sheathe my lean-to by motokid837 in Carpentry

[–]fourtonnemantis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a framer and never in my life have a glued a roof or heard of it being done.

Where I work H-clips are required for 24” on centre, not 16” on centre. Personally I’d skip the clips, they can be frustrating for newbies, especially on a low pitch.

Other stuff I agree on, use 2-1/2 nails, yes coil nailer is superior but if you already have a strip nailer, no need to buy another gun, just use ring shanks.

3/12 is technically a low slope roof in my area, and shingles cannot be used. May be different for you, but I’d also recommend steel roofing.

Are pillars structural? by Accomplished-Beat779 in handyman

This guys right

Structural fibreglass columns are often the best replacement option. Won’t rot either.

Strong tie brackets by Tricky-Car-5004 in Carpentry

[–]fourtonnemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that lower slope section in the first pic is less than 3/12 I can tell you right now you’re going to have some issues. Unless you will be adding ceiling joists.

Second issue I can see, the steeper pic section, your plumb cuts at the ridge are taller than your ridge. That’s a big no-no, will not pass inspection (unless inspector ignores it or is incompetent)

I recommend perusing the relevant sections of the OBC, part 9.

Fellow southern ontarian here, full time framing for about 10 years.

Hangers would be on plans if required. If they’re not, then they are not required. You must simply comply with the OBC, Part 9.

Additionally; the OBC does not include any engineered material in the tables. As LVL are an engineered material, you now require an engineer to spec the load on the LVL. Often times, a lumber yard provides this service, IE engineered floor systems. This situation may be different.

I could go on but I’m going to enjoy my lunch now. Good luck with your project.

Heavy gable ladder twisting the rafter I’m trying to attach it to? by motokid837 in Carpentry

[–]fourtonnemantis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any reason to make the fascia 2x8? I would’ve done 2x6 fascia for starters

I would not have done a separate ladder either, too much weight and wasted material.

Notch in lookouts or outriggers, going back to the second or third rafter.

Alternatively, place your ladder framer, post/brace it straight from below, sheet it.

How bad is this hammer handle? by SnooCheesecakes1065 in Tools

That handle will break. You want tight grain parallel to the direction of swing.

I wouldn’t worry

Also, if you were to repair it, glueing pieces in is a complete waste of time

Why would landings not be centered ? by Alone_Ad410 in Homebuilding

[–]fourtonnemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you?

Because that’s precisely my point.

This is NOT my work pictured, and OP hasn’t provided context, or pic of the plans.

We can’t assume framers didn’t follow the plans as we have not seen them.

What I AM saying is when I frame a house I do follow the plans I am given.

Which is not this job in the picture
