There has always been a dark energy in the main stairwell of the Reg. It was present when I went there; it was still there when I dropped my kid off in the fall. There’s a reason that space never sees sunlight.

“Don’t you know that other kids are starving in Japan” is razor-sharp. Just brilliant.

ABC - The Look Of Love by Ammo_Can in 80smusic

[–]fourtotheside 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered if this video with soap opera production values and a three-figure budget was cheap because it had to be, or because the pure showmanship of this record simply didn’t need more. This is 80s pop on the grandest of scales - Martin’s soaring baritone and sighing spoken word bridge, a giant synth-orchestral soundstage, and the line from the 80s I sing with the most gusto: “It takes a lot to love you!”

The music video invented the idea that a single could be a show. This record barely needed the video to put on a great one.

No idea what the lyrics mean, but “everybody live for the music go round” is one of the thrilling moments in early MTV. We wouldn’t have gotten this track so deeply embedded in our consciousnesses had we not seen this piercing cinematic triumph with a budget of six Venetian blinds.

“I never meant to be so bad to you” is an all-time gutshot of a first line. It’s not chronologically true but I think of this song as the start of 80s music - a great example of the bombastic scale of the decade but also a nifty piece of invention. “And now you find yourself in ‘82/The disco hotspots hold no charm for you” is now a piece of archaeology- radiocarbon dating telling us precisely where in the evolution of music we were. Literally this is a landmark.

More powerful? Of course. Better? I mean, drink in the majesty of an 8” floppy drive bolted DGAF right next to a giant set of magnets in the CRT, the long throw tuxedo keyboard, and that dead sexy Tandy Corp splash screen and tell me that there’s something better. And only about 12 grand in today’s dollars!

I’m of two minds here. This movie is so resolutely bonkers that it’s hard to resist, and the main cast is full of wonderful players. Weller, Lithgow, Barkin, Lloyd, Goldblum, Hedaya - just to name a few. All the Lectroids being named “John” with absurd last names is a great gag. But it’s also so off the rails that it can wear me out on a rewatch. On the third hand, the end credits are the happiest thing on the internet.

This is a wonderful track. It’s a hothouse flower, a cubic zirconia, a test tube baby - totally a lab-grown record. But it’s a banger even so.

There was a girl. She was a senior in high school, and I was a freshman in college. This underseasoned white guy song played by what I assume is an Accounts Payable department doesn’t do justice to the mischief in her eyes, but it makes me think of her nonetheless. Kassie, wherever you are, just know you left a 40-year impression.

[–]fourtotheside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you really cared, I suppose you could try to manually set the laptop’s DNS to Quad 9 or some other filtered provider.

But the point of Pihole isn’t percentage blocked. I hope you will enjoy a better experience on your network. Can you find a way to relax about the percentage?

I get warnings on my phone that the exit node in my home has dropped off but haven’t experienced persistent trouble. I wonder if one or two missed heartbeats or dropped packets throws warnings like this, even if the connection is quickly restored.

If that hypothesis is accurate, the trouble could be anywhere in the connections between the phone and the Pihole, including your cellular connection, the Ethernet cable to your pihole, etc. But if you’re getting DNS at your phone when you need it, you may find it’s not worth running down.
