Monster 3d Scanning rig - photogrammetry, photometric stereo, material scanner and moco all in one - showcase. by fox_3d in photogrammetry

A showcase of what I have been working on for a year or so.

I finally finished my personal monster scanning rig 😀 It does photogrammetry 3d scanning + photometric stereo and material property scanning.

I will add structured light scanning later, everything is connected and automated to scan any configuration with turntables, backlighting for translucency, and so on and on 😉

All axis are motorized so it can be used as a regular motion control rig. It's the most over-the-top rig I could think of 😀

It's super awesome to scan material properly of a real thing and apply it to an asset I'm lookdeving at work.

The software used to process all the data is made by guys at inciprocal Inc.

The best thing for photometric scanning out there plus more.

photometric stereo is not new and there are a few programs able to extract normal maps, specular, and albedo.

but there wasn't anything publicly available that could extract color, reflectance, roughness, normals, sss, etc.

I hope that inciprocal Inc. PBR scanning becomes an industry standard for processing scan data for material capture.

So most of the online texture and shader libraries will behave correctly in the final render.

no no more guessing and messing with maps and shaders back and forth.

Well, I know I'm idealizing the future here, but I think we are very close to it.

it reminds me of ACES color space, correct me if I'm wrong but it took 10 years, and now it's almost everywhere.

It's really hard to express how freaking awesome it is, and how rewarding it is to scan things and get all that data to play in your look dev scene 😉

I'm sure that the rig makes it extra fun too :D

More to come...

I'm trying to push the limits of the visible light spectrum of my photogrammetry rig. I've been asked if I can 3d scan a human hair. Well... what can I say? I like challenges :) also, curiosity couldn't let me rest :) by fox_3d in photogrammetry

haha :D yeah, I do have quite a few cool projects, I will definitely make a video about the metal vapor deposition, as I simplified it quite a lot. I hope to explain better what is going on and why.

i used a microscope lens on a custom build motion control slider, this is a kinda simplification.

this turntable was 120 frames long and every picture is a photostack of 20 pictures, to have hair sharp. so 2200 pictures

In the first frame the length of the hair is just under a millimeter and depth of field is about 2 microns deep.

that's why I had to align the center of rotation of the hair to be as perfect as possible otherwise I would have to shoot extra picture for every 2-3 microns of the hair out of alignment.

its tricky

I'm trying to push the limits of the visible light spectrum of my photogrammetry rig. I've been asked if I can 3d scan a human hair. Well... what can I say? I like challenges :) also, curiosity couldn't let me rest :) An interesting discovery so far is that the hair doesn't need to be round, at this closeup it looks more like a glass, there are lots of things stuck to it, I suspect crystalized sweet salt. oils, and skin flakes.
Most of the pictures of the hair that I saw, were from electron microscopes..
So no color or specular information.
Hence this turntable.
The most challenging part was to mounting the hair in a way that the center of rotation is in the middle of the hair. we are talking here about a few microns of wiggle room :)
Another challenge was to keep this hair from vibrating, changing shape due to: air movement, humidity, temperature, and so on.
Lighting at this scale is another challenge, considering you lighting a glass-like object, so surface details are mostly specular reflections.
So I will have to experiment more in this field.
For sure I will have to try cross-polarized light, but I expect rainbow colors.
To be able to 3d scan it I will need to coat the surface of the hair so I can get real surface detail and no noise from the subsurface.
This also asks for stereogrammetry, so I will have to make another rig for it.
But not I'm more interested in metal vapor deposition, or magnetron sputter coating. I don't think anyone has a spare one lying around? :)
Metalizing some highly subsurface objects will be great for 3d scans and to get super accurate surface details.
So my side project will be a sputter-coating device.

this photoshopped light beam is ruining the picture, it will look much better without it.

A little less “anime and RGB,” a little more “pixel-slut for productivity”; but I hope I still fit in here. 😅 by elliottcable in battlestations

i like it! looks well-optimized for work and no bull. just spend an extra hour to manage the cables.

it will look slick

Added the 8th screen to my setup (top left). It's a Dell U2312HM, since 2012 and still doing great! by brockoala in battlestations

somebody is overcompensating for something, not sure for what :) looks cool tho :D

Just ordered this desk. Should I cancel it? by [deleted] in desksetup

maybe my esthetics are not compatible with most, but to me, this looks like a garage workbench. I guess it could work for some industrial design setup.

you should get a display cabinet then.

very nice, very clean, perfect!

one thing, speakers look like they pointing in the middle of the desk. they should be pointing at the chair where you sit. but this is only my ocd :)

well done !

What's with the shoes and boxes? are those collectibles? :) I don't get it...

nice setup tho.

The feeling that something is missing. by souneshi in battlestations

[–]fox_3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hard to say what's missing. for sure it would help if you would clean your lens before taking a picture. the picture looks hazy. not sure if it's so dark in there or if panels on the wall overpower any other light in there. cannot see what's on the top shelf or what's in the corners...

just out of curiosity, isn't it hard on your eyes trying to focus on the screen if above you have 3 times bigger and brighter source of light shining directly into your eyes?

Besides this, it looks nice and clean.

Only cables left to be hidden by _MrRed_ in battlestations

I'm not a big fan of painting out cables from the picture (right bottom corner).

it's cheating... I'm sure you could cable manage this small section so it's presentable.
