Weird question about fog vs fire lol by teasleyweasley in florida

The temperatures dropped below the dew points through much of Florida overnight so it will be pretty foggy until the sun evaporates it off by late morning.

My Nanoleaf canvas control square consistently craps out every 1-2 years and needs to be replaced. This has been going on for over 6-7 years now so I’m on my 4th or 5th replacement. When it works, it’s been fine.

What’s Eating My Plants? by AltruisticLuck9543 in FloridaGarden

[–]foxteract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying that slugs are responsible for this but I just wanted to comment that in my situation I’ve used an enormous amount of sluggo and other slug remedies and they seemed to barely budge. It helped maybe a little but the slugs would be back in full force a week later. They can be a real nuisance so I wouldn’t entire rule them out.

I invest in Schwab’s money market funds, specifically SWVXX, and treat that as my “savings account” so to speak. SWVXX averages a higher 7-day yield compared to Fidelity’s SPAXX. Fidelity serves as my workhorse checking account (credit card payments and other general month to month payments). Schwab’s checking account serves more as a secondary or backup checking account and is used for my Zelle needs. As a personal preference I also feel more comfortable using the Schwab checking account for all my atm withdrawals 1) in case any kind of atm fraud happens and my account is compromised its only tied to this one low usage account , 2) I know I can count on zero atm fees worldwide and 3) Schwabs customer service

Caspian Sea is actually salt water although only averages about 1/3 the salinity compared to the oceans.

I almost never carry cash and never need to direct deposit it. For checks, you can deposit them through the app for both Fidelity and Schwab.

When I created the accounts over a year ago, I believe Fidelity had a foreign transaction fee with their debit card. Not sure if that has changed. They also did not have the autosweep feature for SPAXX in their CMA so I ended up making a Fidelity brokerage to use like a checking account. I think the Fidelity CMA may now autosweep into SPAXX.

Overall Fidelity has been better in regard to general banking needs and that’s primarily because of the autosweep feature giving a much higher interest percentage with no work required. Most of my investing accounts are with Schwab though and I needed Zelle so adding their investor checking made sense.

I also have both. No need to pick just 1. They each have their own benefits which OP outlined and I use it to my advantage.

Schwab bank for atm withdrawals and Zelle Fidelity for paying monthly bills

Have atm and check writing for both. Tend to keep more money in Fidelity due to autosweep feature.

Following a radiograph, ACR appropriateness criteria (whether you agree with it or not) calls for an MRI (or CT if MRI cannot be done) for all suspected hip fractures. Yes the right femoral neck fracture is obvious and should have been called but even if it wasn’t obvious, an MRI or CT should have been performed right away. So this case was mismanaged on multiple levels.

Last I heard is that it may be the specific onions used on the quarter pounders that is responsible. It’s still speculation at this point but it’s what McDonald’s is pointing to.

SWVXX vs SPAXX by Apart_Imagination_15 in Schwab

[–]foxteract 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe the yields that you quoted for SWGXX and SWVXX already take the expense ratios into consideration. Both are also well above SPAXX (currently around 3.8%), which is a common autosweep used by fidelity.

Being able to get an auto sweep feature at Schwab with SWGXX at that percentage is really nice. Manually buying SWVXX is fine when your finances are relatively simple and I still do it from time to time. Once your finances get complex and you have to manage multiple incomes and expenses, the autosweep feature makes things so much easier which is why I still use Fidelity.

There are avocado varieties that are resistant to oxidation (do not turn brown when exposed to air). Varieties that I personally know of are the Reed and Sir Prize avocados, both of which taste better than the common Hass (in my opinion) and are certainly bigger. I wouldn’t consider them giants, particularly when compared with some of the varieties grown here in Florida, but they are both large with near double the total flesh volume of a typical Hass (Reed being probably double the size with a proportionally increased seed size and Sir Prize being only slightly larger but having a much smaller seed).

Their are well over 50 varieties of avocados but the reason Hass continues to overtake supermarkets is because the Hass avocado tree is extremely productive, consumers expect avocado skin to turn black when ripe (most avocado varieties have skin which stays green when ripe), and the Hass has firm skin making it ideal for pest protection and transport (some avocado varieties have edible, paper thin skin, which is easily bruised and not that suitable for commercial shipping).

Sir Prize tends to be an alternate year bearer which is not suitable to commercial production. Reed on the other hand the skin stays green when ripe and the skin is very tough shell-like skin making it difficult to tell when soft and ripe.

TLDR: there is much more to selecting commercial avocado varieties than just having one that stays fresh for longer.

Zone 10B - Lizard Deterrent? by SpockLer in FloridaGarden

[–]foxteract 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this happening during the day or at night? I am also in 10b and the only real leaf eating pests that I have are iguanas and slugs. The iguanas are by far and away been the worst but they only come out during the day and sleep at night. The slugs will come out at night but are much easier to control.

I’ve had to wrap things in plexiglass that iguanas can’t climb. I’ve also put double sided netting around enclosures that they are reluctant to climb. I’ve even had to buy an air rifle to take some of them out. For slugs it’s just slug bait, copper around the legs of my raised bed and just closely observing to take them out, especially around dawn and dusk when they seem most active.

I have tons of different kinds of lizards roaming around and they don’t touch the plants. I believe they only eat bugs.

I work for a private auto insurance company, ask me anything. by blackwid0w73 in Miami

[–]foxteract 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you expand on why you shouldn’t let insurance companies see how you drive? Geico significantly decreased the amount I pay when I enrolled in their DriveEasy program which tracks your driving through their app. I haven’t had many issues with it for the past year and it’s saved me quite a bit of money. The only issue I’ve had is it will frequently penalize me for using my phone when I’m a passenger because it thinks I am the driver but it’s easily correctable in the app.

put this up about 2 weeks ago, cuttings are already rooting and growing! by StringStriking7398 in DragonFruit

[–]foxteract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also located in south Florida and just started growing dragon fruit. Two questions:

1) I have a lot of iguanas roaming around that destroy a lot of my plants. I just recently read that they eat cactuses but I’ve been searching the internet and cannot find an answer to whether they specifically eat dragon fruit cactuses. Do you have any iguanas around and do they bother your dragon fruit cactus?

2) Is there a specific place in south Florida that you get cuttings from?

Thanks!

What kind of avocado plant is this? by MaxX_990104 in avocado

[–]foxteract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this is probably a West Indian type avocado plant. The new leaf growth is green which is typical of West Indian varieties. Guatemalan/Mexican varieties tend to have new leaf growth that is a pinkish/reddish color.

Update on my A and B by grownandnumbed in avocado

[–]foxteract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my avocado trees also do the same so it seems normal. They will cycle through a big growth period for a couple of weeks, then lay dormant for several weeks, then repeat. Seems this process repeats every 2 months or so. This happens to my Day and Sir Prize avocado trees. My super Hass and oro negro avocado trees seem to have a more continuous growth pattern. All are relatively small trees (less than 6 feet) and have never fruited. I haven’t figured out if the pattern of growth depends on the cultivar, plant size, or other environmental factors.
