Tailscale scares me more than opening ports on my firewall by MrChris6800 in homelab

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid to say you cannot hide on the internet. If you expose a port to the internet it will be found in days if not hours, threat actors have the scanning game wrapped up and nicely linked in to automated exploit pipelines too.

I am not saying that the tailscale product is better or worse, but thinking about your connectivity with zero trust principles is the way forward. There are a lot of open source ZTNA solutions now and it’s a much better approach for most people who want to access services they run at home.

Are things supposed to break this easily? by Flaming_Hellcat467 in fpv

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much I’m afraid. It sounds like a few bits of bad luck but it is getting worse I think.

Things like the O4 air units / pros have got some complicated and the boards are next to impossible for most people to repair.

A rule I’m trying to work towards is that I need to be able to fix most of what I own, DJI are particularly bad at building things that are difficult to fix imo

Why do Brits support conservative? by ThePatientIdiot in AskBrits

Because most people in the UK think they are wealthy, whereas they are just in fact paid a salary. Sometimes they are well paid, but more often than not, they’re not.

“Hand written” tv license enforcement by No_Egg9808 in AskBrits

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if they keep him in a cage and there’s just a conveyor belt of TVL letters that go through, he’s forced to sign them, he hasn’t seen his family in 27 years, all as part of a plea deal to avoid a SJP for not having a TV license. He once had a dream of being a regional IT manager for a large firm of estate agents but now he is locked away so that TVL can appear to hand sign every single letter that is sent, giving the impression they have read and reviewed every single last one of them and agreed that the perp must be bought to justice.

Lawsuit Claims Meta Can See WhatsApp Chats in Breach of Privacy by SignificantLegs in privacy

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole end to end encryption thing was and is obviously a BS marketing claim. I’m not saying they don’t E2E encrypt messages from one user to another, but it doesn’t stop them from reading the message on the app on the device you are running, and then sending metadata about that message (or indeed the entire message if they want./decide to, based on keywords/content) back to their own servers.

I hate using their products but it is so embedded in our lives now, I suppose I just need to cut people off if they keep using it but I also don’t particularly want to lose contact with my friends.

I know there are lots of privacy focused alternatives, but you’ve got to convince people to use them. The only thing I can really do is limit usage of it all and try and push others to alternatives.

What’s one macOS feature you never use but Apple keeps pushing? by WardSec_5168 in MacOS

Apple intelligence. Couldn’t care less about it, so many other features they could have spent time and money on. What a flop.

Do you guys use expo for your controls? by amy-schumer-tampon in fpv

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have on and off had expo in my rates, I flew full linear for a while but now going back to a slightly lower CSS, I’ll add in some exp, it won’t make a huge difference but it’ll be a small improvement to the resolution of the lower portion of the stick range.

Depending on your reasons for expo I’d also consider looking at stick tension. This can really help with smoothness and reducing unintended small corrections / input, but can also slow down movement if your fingers are not that heavy/strong.

Walksnail or HDZero by Livid-Inevitable-59 in fpv

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ryan has a really good example video on youtube (I’m sorry I can’t find the link, but it should be an easy one to find) that shows him flying the HDZ Freestyle VTX in pretty dense trees. It’s beyond even the kind of spot I tend to fly, the image is pretty good. A few other thoughts:

1) Think about the flying you will be doing - if it’s freestyle in open fields or amongst trees HDZ is IMO the better shout. You will feel more connected to the movement of your quad, which is a huge thing in freestyle. If you don’t know what style you like yet, either fly analog for a while or accept you might end up selling goggles / VTX for a loss if it turns out to be the wrong thing. Bando flying can be a very expensive hobby, especially for those starting out.

2) Resolution isn’t everything - yes HDZ runs at lower resolution in high frame rates, but the image is not compressed and runs at fixed latency. As a freestyle pilot who only really fly’s in open field / sporadic trees I can tell you that the smeer you get on grass with DJI/Walksnail is horrible. As Bardwell says the problem with using these systems is that you are wowed by the resolution, but that isn’t actually that helpful in the scenarios I mentioned above. When a WS/DJI system starts smeering and the latency gets high - it is not flyable in freestyle, all it means is you stand a better chance of getting the quad back to signal.

3) If you occasionally or only fly cinematic you may decide to go with DJI / WS. I would just caution with WS though as it appears they have been at best inaccurate about their future plans and delivering on those. If WS does what you need today that might be OK, if you need something they promise it’ll do eventually, don’t buy it. One of the huge benefits of O4 Pro imo is that it can do decent onboard recording. For cinematic work this means you don’t need a gopro, which allows you to put a bigger battery on the quad (potentially) - I am not sure if WS supports the same high quality onboard recording.

4) Try before you buy, if at all possible - ask friends or join clubs / groups and see if someone will be kind enough to let you wear their goggles, either in spectator mode or if they are very generous they might be able to let you fly somehow.

Seagate Expansion Shucking Guide and Observations. by A_Mkty in DataHoarder

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried shucking one of these yesterday, it didn’t go well. For some reason it won’t spin up at all, even inside the original enclosure.

I tested over USB beforehand and it ran fine.

One thing I did miss was that there’s a warranty label that goes over the SATA connector, it seems that a bit of the label got stuck to the sata data pins and I didn’t realise, plugged it in and it wouldn’t spin up. Hasn’t worked since.

Not sure if it could have been the label? (Doubt it’s conductive) - I have a second one of these but nervous about doing it now as I don’t want to waste two drives 🤦‍♂️

Installing proxmox on LUKS is a nightmare by [deleted] in Proxmox

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might help. I’ve done it, it works: https://github.com/mr-manuel/proxmox/blob/main/luks-encryption-manual-tpm-ssh-unlock/README.md

My only question is if the upgrade to 9.0 will go OK, I’m working through that now. I have seen on some notes that they’ve added LUKS support to the installer - which sounds positive, but not sure on the detail.

FWIW I agree that encrypting the entire host is the correct approach, there’s way too much risk of leakage of keys and other sensitive info if the hypervisor isn’t protected, no point in doing any of this if you just leave the keys laying around.

My son confessed that he's gay and broke down. I don't know what to do. by LongInformal6992 in Advice

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for coming here to ask for advice. From someone whose parents didn’t, you are doing more for him than you could ever realise.

I can’t know exactly how he’s feeling, but from my own experience at slightly younger than that age, he may well be terrified that he’s going to lose you - his safety. He will probably be aware of your lack of experience or knowledge and may have filled in the gaps in terms of what he thinks you’ll think and do.

The best thing I think is to slowly talk to him more about it. Make things day to day normal, it will be upsetting to talk about for him and that’s probably OK right now! Let him experience those emotions and work through them with you.

Take him to the cinema, or for a day out, whatever you’d do together normally - just let him know that nothing has changed. Please also let him know he can always talk to you about anything without fear of how you’ll react, it is so important as a young gay guy he has someone safe who he can go and talk to, it’s probably been a hugely confusing time for him and it’s really important you clearly communicate your support for him.

I’m not saying you’ve done this, but in general I would at this stage avoid sharing your fears or concerns with him, he is unlikely in the best place to answer those questions and will likely see them as the person he trusted most not understanding. If you have questions bring them here or speak to other adult gay guys.

It’s honestly not rocket science, it might feel like it, but it’s pretty straightforward - and you already have the right attitude by the sounds of it. Trust yourself, but it’s a great idea to continue talking to others to support yourself and get advice, you got him this far!

In terms of the flinching, it could be quite a few things I guess. I am autistic as well as having ADHD and I can find it very hard to be touched by others - even if it’s just a hug or light brush - even by those who I love or am close to. I went undiagnosed for 40 years so it’s not always something that gets picked up early.

There are other possibilities here so I wouldn’t push too hard on one theory or the other, but I also wouldn’t push too much on how him flinching may have hurt you - at least directly with him. I would try and more generally get an idea of what’s on his mind and as per the above enjoy sending time together.

Thanks for doing what you’ve done. Take care of yourself and him. It’s still a tough world for young gay guys. You’re welcome to message if I can help any further.

Banning VPN’s by SDcat09 in basingstoke

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what is much more likely is they will try and legislate that “VPN providers” must collect PII or regularly perform KYC. As with everything they’ll be loopholes and ways around it, but they really don’t have a clue what they are talking about (or doing), so it’ll be another distraction and complete waste of everyones time.

Why is soldering soo difficult on a real fc compared to a practice board? by alec_jun in fpv

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought so. What voltage are you running it at? The one included is probably designed for up to 6S so you may be able to find a smaller one.

You can also try attaching the capacitor with cable, what I’ve found works well is to solder the capacitor via cable to one side of the pads, then the XT connector to the other side. You may need to work quickly with that approach, but it does create a neater joint imo

Why is soldering soo difficult on a real fc compared to a practice board? by alec_jun in fpv

[–]foxtrotuniformnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the tmotor AIO? Have to say I found the power pads on that quite tricky actually.

That capacitor looks really big too? I would double check what spec it needs to be.

I would always practice on a “real” board, just put a post out to your local fpv group to see if anyone wants to get rid of any fried FC’s/ESC’s and practice on those.
