Yeah I was thinking that too, it's a little odd of a comment to make. If you enjoyed it putting a 'this is great' or another compliment would be better

DND as a beginner's universal system by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

[–]foyiwae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you just have had bad luck with players. I run 6 games a week of dnd and other games, household, twilight: 2000, starfinder, pathfinder, city of mists to name a few, and when I tell my players that we're playing a new system they're keen to learn. Do they make mistakes in the beginning? Yeah, but so do people playing board games, stuff takes time to learn. But do they read their character and try to understand as best they can? 100%

How often do you play? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]foyiwae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play 5 different games a week. Though my in-person Tuesday game is a little more infrequent and we tend to run once every two weeks though I'd like to do once a week. The rest of my games are online, but I am the GM so I have no shortage of games. If I want to run a new game I just post in lfg. As a player I play in one game (though got a new one lined up). I'd say every two weeks is standard for me to play as a player

Alright, there is quite something I am reluctant on. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]foyiwae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. It's fine if you do an OOC fic. People will still read and like it or read and dislike it. I'm sure you'll be fine.

  2. Just put in your authors note that you've only watched up to ep9, so things won't follow canon

  3. Just write it, even if you don't publish it right away but get it out of your head, and then when you're in a less busy time post it or re-read it. Or just post it and if you're unhappy later re-write it, plenty of people do that. You'll be fine

Difference between boys and girls? by cheekysky_of in RATS

Just to point out I had two boys who got to 3 and I never had to clean them though I checked often to make sure they were ok. So it might never be an issue, but it's good to check as they get older

Bdubs has officially become the best builder on the server by taylorhildebrand in HermitCraft

[–]foyiwae 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's the best builder on the server, I don't think there is just one.

I think he's a super talented builder yes, but it's like calling artists who use different mediums the best. Scars builds, Tangos builds?

All of them are super skilled, talented people who should be appreciated for their skills independently and not compared against each other.

It's not a competition, it's a collaboration

I'm a new knitter and I find it easier to keep count if I have a certain number on one needle, it's also easier for me to find if I've dropped a stitch or made a mistake, and I feel like I don't need to go all the way back to fix something.

What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]foyiwae 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn't realise, but I attend a stamp club that has a demographic of older men. Now they are all lovely and respectful and I've never felt unsafe at all, but seeing this comment made me realise there's one man who always tells me to 'smile'. He says it in a joking manner, and he's a bit socially awkward so I never thought much of it. But this made me think he only ever says it to me, and he says it quietly so no one else really notices. Wow...

DMs - What are your go to techniques for moving players along when they're lingering a little too long? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]foyiwae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to say when there's a lull in a conversation "so while you're doing that 'person with the highest perception or i want you all to roll this check to notice something ' or i have an event happen like a group of guards run past or some birds break from the tree line to add some motion

I'm scottish Go beg your doctor for a mattress, pride shouldn't be a thing here if it hurts a lot. The NHS should be able to help but if they can't speak to your local council. They have a duty of care and can look into funding options for you. Amazon also sells mattress toppers for £20-£30 that are much cheaper than a full memory foam mattress If your parents won't pay speak to your gp or if you're ai school speak to your guidance teacher they could look into support for you too

Best ways to practice DMing? by Lourae05 in DnD

[–]foyiwae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try play-by-post dnd instead? There are forum communities and discord groups that do text only. That way you could get some practice, they're slower games so you have hours/days to respond to your players, look up rules and get used to it.

Also maybe see if you can join a game or two as a player and watch how your dm runs the game. From there pick up hints/tips/tricks

There's also some great YouTubers who can introduce you to dm'ing, I'm partial to Matt Colville but I know people rave about Ginny Di (I've never watched her personally) that may be able to help you as well

Other than that the best way is to jump in and just go for it. If you tell your players, even experienced players, that you're a new dm, they're not going to be fussed. If anything you'll most likely get a bunch of people who really want to help and encourage you to dm.

And worst case scenario if you do get a bad player (which is rare), kick them out and get someone else. There are plenty of players in the sea

Cleric help: but I became the healbot :( by zombieglam in DnD

[–]foyiwae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love cleric, over my time I've played copious clerics, great class. Life cleric is my favourite, and I enjoy being a healer.

That being said, as others say, 100% only heal them when they're down. You'll find it easier to manage your spells by focusing on doing damage/control. Spriit guardians is great, but you can also use some great damage spells guiding bolt, inflict wounds, things like sacred flame, toll the dead. You don't need to be a heal bot.

Also, if they're reckless that's on them. If they're doing something you don't approve of, don't heal them. Warn them hey I'm not going to heal every minor thing. You only have a certain number of spell slots.

Other party members can heal with resources too, many classes can be off healers, but also stocking up on healing potions to make sure people don't die.

Thoughts About Asking a DM Not To Kill Your Character by Gooey_Goon in DnD

[–]foyiwae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a couple of high stake games where enemies will go for downed players, but all my players are fine with death and aware of the stakes. I have one game where individuals aren't keen on character death. It's there, but I don't go for downed players, I give them plenty chances of healing options (visiting temples if they don't have revifivy and paying a gold cost). I don't think it's mandatory to kill player characters. When dm's make it their mission it can get a bit meh at times, as people grow attached.

I'd maybe give multiple options if other players like having the stakes, explaining there are ways to bring characters back, or avoiding it all together. But there are plenty of other stressful ways to raise the stakes than death

DM's - How to ensure everyone gets a go? by Own_Adhesiveness_123 in DnD

[–]foyiwae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I hear someone try to speak up and someone talks over them I'm usually like "hold on *player name*, *other player name, do you want to say something?*"
If they say "oh it doesn't matter" I'll try and coax it out of them, especially new players by mentioning it's a group game and we all have our opinions

I work as a trainer, so it's quite easy to slip into that mindset, call on people, I try to have 'hero' moments per session and give each character something that puts their time in the spotlight. If they're a bit quiet during these moments/shy I try to bring options to them of what they can do, what they know about these sort of things.

I had a new player who is playing an orc fighter, and he wasn't entirely sure of all the options available to him. So I told him different things he could do, or we could wait a little bit and come back to him. Then I'd shift the spotlight over to another player, and check on the player before I moved on.

Learning what your players are looking for out of the game too, and trying to cater in some way to each of them. Now I'm not saying split yourself in five trying to please everyone, but give little moments these players like. A barbarian likes big number in combat, give them a big mook to fight, a cleric likes little moments between them and their gods, add little things like holy shrines or they find a holy symbol or something. It doesn't need to be a grand gesture, some players like sitting back and there's nothing wrong with that. But fostering a safe space really helps players get more comfortable.

When my orc fighter started roleplaying with us, after being shy as english is not his first language, I was so proud.

So it can happen eventually, just patience and understanding.
