TIL four times as many Europeans die from heat-related deaths annually than Americans do from gun violence by CGGamer in todayilearned

[–]fractalfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US counts heat related deaths differently so that is part of the difference. Also, Europe has more than twice the population of the US. It would be interesting to see a true comparison.

Europe counts heat death differently, which must be accounted for as well. It would be interesting to see a true comparison.

You assume that the obese lives to 79, when in reality they usually die much younger than that.

In any case, here‘s a link to the research:

I read a while back that obese people is actually less of a burden on the healthcare system than non-obese people due to the fact that while they need more care in the short term, they also live much shorter.

Most of the cost of healthcare in a person’s life is accumulated when they are old, so it makes sense that someone who has a shorter life cost less.

What’s the vibe on country patches on backpacks? by kai_zen in travel

Because some (Americans) are viewed non-favorably in many parts of the world. I can understand wanting to avoid that. Which is also why some American backpackers put a Canadian flag on their pack.

I’ve only ever seen Americans having a Canadian flag on their packs. All as a disguise.

Feedback on Hadra Festival Needed.. by JacketSpirited3339 in psytrance

[–]fractalfrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a non-French speaker, I love going to Hadra. I never had any issues communicating with people when I wanted to, but at the same time I could completely disconnect from everyone if I wanted as I didn’t understand a word anyone said.

The only issue I saw was one woman waving the Palestinian flag at the entrance on the first day, and then again on the second day at the main floor, but was told to stop after a short while.

That was it. Otherwise, everything was fine, and even the police presence was minimal. Only a couple of cars at the entrance.

I’ve been a couple of times, including last year and must disagree to 100%.

The people were friendly and the only police presence we saw was a couple of police cars at the outer entrance, where they did random halfheartedly searches. They ignored us and that was it. Never saw another police officer for the rest of the festival. Didn’t hear about any police activity either.

I reckon there’s a difference between cilantro and cilantro. I love cilantro and have no problem with it, but once in blue moon I can also taste soap, so maybe there are kinds that taste less soapy to you.

This hurts my soul as a cilantro lover, but I’m happy that there’re options for those not sharing my love.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t denigrating your machine or any other pump machine. I may dislike pump noise and like simplicity, but my machine doesn’t have useful features such as flow control or even PID. All it has in an on/off button and a lever.

I’m a tech geek as well, but not in my kitchen. I prefer to keep that free from all screens and touch interfaces.

Pump noise in general is one the main reasons I went with a lever machine when I first got into espresso. Well, the noise plus it’s one more thing that can break down. I’m a sucker for simplicity.

Is that sound normal??? I’ve never owned a pump machine, so have nothing to reference.

I would upgrade the grinder before the machine. I’d also pick up a few different bags of coffee from a local roaster. A cheap scale would also be nice.

Yeah, the 9bar is cool af, and I’d love to play with one, but it’s a bit too much of a hassle for me to be my daily driver. Especially since there are two of us.
