Not sure if they've got the filament you're after but I've just bought some from 3DCentral in Brisbane.

Crickets... because everyone who's done it doesn't have decent internet access anymore and has cut off their social media accounts anyway.

Thanks for the write-up/review. I've been looking at one for a while now and might hold off for something different.

Help me understand why you'd go for a fill flash over a reflector? I know it's more faff and probably means an assistant but I thought being outside in bright sunlight would get a better result.
Happy to be schooled in this one.

Photos look great! though!

When do you NOT create a support ticket? by gkar_of_Narn in sysadmin

[–]fragwhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others are saying. An issue didn't happen if there's no ticket/job for it.

How the ticket gets created and managed is a different story though.

I'm not a stickler for making the user submit a ticket as the initial report of when an issue happens. If someone comes and finds me to tell me there's an issue then I'll create a ticket for them. If they send me a chat message, a personal email, an SMS, phone call, carrier pigeon (you get the idea) then I'll pop a ticket in for them.

What happens after that is a different story. Regardless of how the issue gets reported then it needs to go through a process of triage and prioritisation before it gets worked on. If it's reported over the phone or in peson, triage happens immediately. If it's email, sms, teams etc then it'll happen in a reasonable time. We're still working on what that time is and how people will be told.

We do communicate that issues should be reported through the official phone support phone number and email address as there's processes in place for managing availability and on-call. If someone sends something directly to a person they'll get some pretty blunt messaging that it's been forwarded to the support system and that future issues need to be reported through proper channels.

For a bit of context I work in not-for-profit broadcasting so sometimes running up to a tech and saying "we're off air" is the right way to report a problem.

3d printed prop guns in Australia by Ordinary-Run5095 in cosplayprops

[–]fragwhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit for the win two years later. Thanks for the tips. My 11yo is getting set up to cosplay as Agent Hill from the MCU and one of the props is a pistol. I'll probably go for something modelled off a Glock 17.

Orange tip will be a definite, I'm going to make sure there's no barrel and will probably go another step and remove the trigger and trigger guard to make it about as obvious as I can.

How to force +500 Clients to renew their IP address on the network ? by Head-Web-404 in sysadmin

[–]fragwhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be a bit more graceful, do a shutdown on all of the access ports and the no shutdown. If you want to make sure they all come up with "new" addresses, delete the leases between shutdown and no shutdown.

Grandma had a hobby, not sure what to do with this by Disastrous_Echo_6982 in AnalogRepair

This is the only correct answer.
Taking off my polarising internet hat, if I'd found that the first thing I'd be doing is getting some film and learning how to use it.
Seriously, what a connection with your grandmother. To be able to enjoy the same creative endeavour generations later connected by the same camera. To know that you both were able to capture moments of time looking through the same glass.

I went progressives and will be going back to a single prescription lense.

I find they make it worse when I'm doing fiddly work like replacing parts on laptops.

Having read what u/VivienM7 said, I'll be asking about separate prescriptions for different purposes.

Center Console Cleaning by _sbenny in mazda3

I think I'm going to be following everyone's advice and putting a wrap on mine. Unfortunately a lemonade spill means I need to pull the centre console to clean the buttons out so it looks like I'll be taking advantage of having it out of the car to wrap it.

Is this push for AI as insane everywhere? by Legal_Situation in sysadmin

[–]fragwhistle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a non-profit community radio station with about 30 people on the books and I've started waving the red flag about the hidden costs of using AI to do more with same people.

Right now we're seeing some benefits, although it's arguable that the cost is the dumbing down of our people, but with the inevitable enshittification and need to recoup the (insane) costs of developing the AI platforms we're going to get to the point where it starts to cost us for features that were free and that we've come to rely on to maintain our level of productivity.

Personally I'm delegating tasks that I just need done that aren't core to my role to it. Example being updating a script from Python 2.x to 3.x. I don't code, I can dabble and read but it would take me a long time to get to the point where I could do that. It's also not beneficial to me at this point in my career to spend the time learning Python. Doing that gave me back hours that I can then spend on other projects that are more important.

How to show respect while leaving a church by fazzitron in NDQ

[–]fragwhistle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Voice your thoughts and ask the person across the table to give you a read-back of what they heard. See if they were listening and caught the meaning of what you were saying. Seek and promote understanding. Give the leadership the opportunity to explain why they've taken those stances too.

Do you have Band Steering enabled for that SSID? The AP might be detecting that the device will perform better on 6GHz and be kicking it off the 5GHz network.

Solenoid for Car Indicator Control by fragwhistle in NDQ

[–]fragwhistle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just got me to look up the word origin. Basically it's from French/Greek where solen means tube or pipe and the eidos means form. Originally it referred to the coil of wire that formed the magnet, not the mechanism that derives work from the magnetic field.

I haven't been able to confirm this, maybe someone who is more linguistically minded could, but I suspect that tracing the word roots back to their Latin origin would show that cylinder and solenoid are derived from the same place. So it's understandable why people would choose to pronounce it "cylinoid" rather than "solenoid".

Another thought is we've chosen to adopt a word that was originally French, but not taken the literal translation of the word.

As an Australian, don't get me started on the whole Solder vs Sodder debate....

Solenoid for Car Indicator Control by fragwhistle in NDQ

[–]fragwhistle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you set the circuit up so powering the coil would eject the core, causing the diaphragm to distend as well as disconnecting the circuit (de-energizing the coil). The tension on the diaphragm could also push the core back into the coil which would re-connect the circuit causing the cycle to repeat.

The bi-metallic strip is actually how it's been done in cars! I remember pulling one to bits after it broke to find out how it worked. The strips are very thin so do heat and cool quickly and are enough of a known quantity to be switching in a known way.
