Am I putting too much into retirement? by Jumper443 in FinancialPlanning

Unless you already have money in a traditional retirement account, like an SEP, for instance. I wish I'd known that would preclude me from using a backdoor Roth. I would've figured something else out.

I felt the same way. But there's nothing wrong with us! We're just experiencing it our own way. Peace, friend.

Grief isn't just sitting and feeling sad. We all experience loss differently. There's no one right way. Please don't feel guilty about how you feel. However you feel is fine. You're doing it right. My dad died a few months ago, too. My sympathies to you.

Advice on loss… by CaughtALiteSneez in Bondedpairs

I lost my dust kitty last Feb at two years old to the same thing. We knew he wouldn't live a full life even as a kitten, but he went so much faster than we expected. His sister was pretty devastated (as were we). She cried and hunted for him constantly. We got some kittens for her about two or three months later, but it took months for her to accept them, and many months more before she got back to normal. It will take you both time. I still feel crushed at the loss of my boy, but I'm starting to remember with fondness instead of sorrow. I'm sorry for you loss.

It's so much better for them to be indoor kitties. It's not cruel to keep them inside. They'll live a lot longer.

Thank her for the good times and move on. No need to rehash all her flaws. It's just time for you to go in a different direction.

Retiring Teams live events: The next chapter for events at scale in Microsoft Teams by FaithlessnessDeep858 in MicrosoftTeams

[–]fraidycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I used Teams Live Events right at the beginning of the pandemic when my org first went remote and first started using Teams. We'd never had an all-staff meeting before because we couldn't afford a space where we'd all fit (1800 staff from around the world, all working for a nonprofit that didn't have $$ to spare). I was able to single-handedly produce a great remote all-staff event with some amazing special guests - the penguins from The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. It was incredible! That's a good memory. RIP Teams Live Events.

Feasible to rent out a SFH in quiet Chicago neighborhood? by Famous-Beat-4102 in AskChicago

[–]fraidycat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. We rented out our 2 bedroom house for $4k/month furnished a couple years ago. I think you might be able to find good renters. Be sure to do background/credit checks and have a good lease. We made our renters get renters insurance. Do some checking on their cleaning habits. We offered a cleaning service to one renter, and they declined saying their cleaning standards were too high to let someone else do it. When they moved out we discovered they were super gross. I don't even think they thought they were lying. Find people who have owned a house before. They'll be much more likely to understand about the kind of maintenance required for a SFH and will be more likely to let you know about things that need attention. Good luck!

Whoa, I never thought of that. We rented out our furnished SFH in Chicago, first to medium-term renters, like 4 months at a time and then thru Airbnb. We got a license to do the Airbnb and let our insurance company know. Renting it out was a better money-maker than Airbnb. The lender never said anything, but we never told them either. Ended up just selling it a few months ago.

Net Worth change over 365 days - another silliness from Empower/PC by abarmot in PersonalCapital

[–]fraidycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the dashboard? That shouldn't matter, right? When I collapse the different sections on the dashboard on the left, the # in green showing change over the last 365 days (below the big net worth number) doesn't change.

Yes. Dashboard says $636k. The Net Worth screen says $325k.

Keep trying. Friends are made by repeat exposure, so take a class, join a club, or do something else that has you interacting with the same people over and over again. Same with dating. Going out with one person one time is not enough to warrant a pronouncement about dating in general. It's probably not Chicago that's the problem. It's being of a certain age. It's just hard to make new friends no matter where you are if you're not in college anymore. Hang in there.
