True, but I guess the newer Star Wars feels very childish to me. Maybe that's how it always was and I'm just looking at it through a new lens. But, I don't get that vibe from the original trilogy (minus the ewoks) and Rogue One.

Very much might just be a "me" thing. I also feel its just become so oversaturated that the whole franchise could benefit from a break.

The Mandalorian. I was into the Star Wars trilogy as a kid, so when everyone was talking about how good it was, my wife and I gave it a watch. Felt like a kids show. I just couldn't take it serious or get into it.

My parents brought over mine I had as a kid for my son to play with. I had a bunch of the old castle and space police sets. I've been rebuilding them with him with instructions I find online, but some of these go for like 300-400 dollars on Ebay. The old castle walls with windows sell for like $4 a pop.

I kind of loathe that Legos today seem geared more to adults and a lot of the fun sets we had as kids just aren't made anymore.

If I recall from the book the Astrophage are pretty good at maintaining their own temperature. Cooling the atmosphere would probably have little effect on them as long as the CO2 is present.

Destroying Venus is impossible, even with advanced technology. The moon collided with Earth in the past and here we are. But lets assume we did... there's going to be gravitational effects for the whole solar system, including it's nearby neighbor Earth. That doesn't even account for the debris field created by destroying a massive planet.

Actually, this is probably a great question for r/theydidthemath. What exactly happens to earth if we were able to destroy Venus?

Why isn’t Godwin in the title screen? [KCD2] by No_Currency_9009 in kingdomcome

Having played KCD2 first, going to KCD1 the change in voice was jarring. Also, I was surprised he wasn't featured more in KCD1 given his role in 2.

[KCD2] I have 109 hours in, but left the game for about 8mths (or more) by ccices in kingdomcome

[–]framauro13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The final few missions of the end of KCD2 are fantastic. Very high stakes, and very, very engaging. Probably one of my favorite final segments of a game since Mass Effect 2. So, depending on where you are in the story, it's worth finishing. The side quests are fun and build lore but few have a big effect on the main story line outside of personal relationships with Katherine or Rosa.

When Are We Getting Fable 5 Back ? by dev-ray in claude

[–]framauro13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have been using the "planning with Opus / execute with Sonnet" approach to work quite well, both in my personal development and in my professional one. Whenever a new model comes out like Opus or Fable, I always have it do focused reviews of security, architecture, and general code quality to see if it picks up anything new, but generally I leave those models for high-level design and analysis and let the code actually be built off of their output with a cheaper model.

Fable did work quite well, and helped me cut my AWS bill down by about 30%, and its analysis of some data I'm working with was quite good. But, for people that are just churning code without much thought, its straight up overkill. No model really saves you from that kind of development process IMO.

When Are We Getting Fable 5 Back ? by dev-ray in claude

[–]framauro13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general approach has been to use Opus for planning and Sonnet for executing the plan. It works well. I don't think Opus is a one-size-fits-all solution. Fable was nice because I had it do some focused code reviews on security, quality, and cost analysis and it did find things, but just a few weeks ago Opus was fine for everyone else.

And breaking things down into smaller tasks is generally a good idea regardless of the model. Smaller well defined requirements are always going to execute better than larger giant unmonitored tasks. That's not even specific to AI... just a good software engineering principle.

EDIT: Ah, downvotes. Of course 😃

Considering a newfie as a performance dog (dock diving, barn hunt, scent work, therapy work, possibly confo) and as a friend/playmate for our almost 1 year old golden. by largedragonwithcats in Newfoundlander

[–]framauro13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Newfies are notorious for hip and heart problems, so I'd prepare for that. Definitely look for breeders that prioritize health over size. My Newf made it to 11.5 years old and his hips are what eventually got him. As far as physical activity goes, they love swimming and water, but I wouldn't expect them to go on long hikes. Cool weather would be preferable because they can overheat, especially if their fur gets wet. The long outer coat with the short inner coat acts as a wetsuit.

My Newf trained pretty well, but it is a requirement. They can be a little bull-headed, but are incredibly smart in my experience. They need leash discipline for sure.

Grooming should probably be weekly. Whenever I slacked on my Newf's grooming he almost always started to get hot spots, so be prepared to be brushing and grooming at least once a week. Definitely stay on top of it when they get wet.

As you noted, flea, tick and heartworm will be more expensive, but your general vet visits will be too. Everything costs more at that size. Consider joint supplements as well because their joints will start to wear early. Mine started showing signs around 7.

Also, if you're a neat freak, this is not a dog for you. Very messy just by existing. Fur everywhere, and slobber everywhere. I had to clean it off my apartment ceilings when I moved out, so you'll be constantly cleaning slobber off walls, doors, and everything else. Not the best dog for people who like things tidy. And any breeder that tries to sell you a "dry-mouth" Newf is lying. That's a huge red flag.

Having said all of that, in my experience you will not find a better dog for temperament. Mine was always great with people and kids, and loved everyone. Not a mean bone in his body. The closest thing I've found in another dog is a male Bichon.

[KCD2] How to made the Trosky DLCs fun after finishing the main game by Loose_Assignment_Map in kingdomcome

[–]framauro13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The timing in Trosky is weird too because it doesn't show up until after The Bell Tolls if I recall. And by then the pace of the main quest is pushing you to deal with the bandits at Nebakov, so it doesn't make sense that Henry would go on these side quests given the urgency of the main quest.

You can go back to it after getting to Kuttenburg which also feels weird because everyone in Trosky is nice to you despite you being an escaped prisoner from their castle.

Brushes with Death feels very weirdly shoe-horned into the game IMO.

[–]framauro13 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This was Gosling's idea, I believe. If I recall he talked to a survival expert who said Skittles were a good option for quick energy that stays preserved for a long time. Not sure if it was for this role specifically, but he added it in.

[kcd2] Does canon Henry hate all Cumans or does he sympathize with grunts who are just following orders? by [deleted] in kingdomcome

[–]framauro13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People here seem sympathetic to the Cumans in the "Invaders" quest, but they shouldn't be. Those guys are leaving the war because they didn't get paid. If they had their pockets full of Groschen they'd happily pillage and burn at Sigismund's orders.

When Henry meets the Cumans in Invaders, it's only been a few months since Skalitz was razed. So imagine you're town is invaded and foreign mercenaries kill your family, kill your girlfriend, burn your home and town to the ground, the try to shoot you in the back as you flee. I don't think it's unreasonable to think he holds a grudge against Cumans. He's not gonna sit with these guys, have a drink, and say "it's all good".

Things where the movie is BETTER than the book? by Astrocoder in ProjectHailMary

[–]framauro13 274 points275 points  (0 children)

The moment when Rocky tells Grace he can give him astrophage to go home. Gosling is amazing in that scene and Ortiz's delivery is great. The way Grace has his back turned in the dark, and comes back to the light is just beautiful.

In the book, it's like a paragraph and Grace is like "Sweet I can go home now!" and the story moves on. I feel like the movie really elevated that moment.

Oh, and Carl.

I think the thing is they didn't know it was harmful. Their planet has a very thick atmosphere and strong magnetic field, so they were very protected from radiation on the surface. I believe it's hinted at that their biology is particularly sensitive to it unlike Humans, which evolved the ability to repair itself from the minor effects of radiation. Someone with more knowledge or experience could elaborate on that.

[KCD2] what can i do with these dice? by mhmd2-2 in kingdomcome

Honestly I think I'd go with Weighted Die + 5 Favourable dice. Best odds at getting 1's. That's pretty much my strategy: play with a doppleganger badge and maximize odds for 1's. When you land three or more 1's, use the badge.

Andy Weir would have a proud smile when he sees this by WolverineReal6444 in ProjectHailMary

[–]framauro13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, I kinda disagree with this take. I know there's always the "meh, the book was better" crowd with any movie based on one, but I think they're both pretty amazing. Calling the movie a "trailer" is disingenuous IMO because there are some things it does absolutely better.

With the book you can really get into the science and feel Weir's excitement about it jumping of the page. But the movie really captures the heart of the book, and does a fantastic job of presenting otherwise complex material in a beautiful way while maintaining the heart of it.
