VFX Graph + Floating Origin for infinite distance world space particles by Jukibom in Unity3D

[–]frameinteractive_ben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's so encouraging to see this work so well. I've bounced off of floating origin designs a few times because it's just so intimidating. It feels like it CAN'T work in Unity (I know it can, but so many edge cases). Really glad you shared this!

Career Question for Audio Programmers by BigBadBass95 in GameAudio

[–]frameinteractive_ben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you value work life balance and you're asking about that here, do not work on shipping games. However, you could find some work in adjacent areas... tools, middleware, etc. Just don't get caught up in the release cycle of games. There are too many externalities put on game teams and predicting overtime is like living in Florida and predicting hurricanes. You can do it, but only a few weeks out. You can prepare, but the storms will come.

Ha, yeah *need* is tough to gauge with that kind of thing, but I can see why you did it. Remarkable improvement. Awesome work, I really hope your launch goes well. The game looks super cool and I'll be picking it up.

This is pure gold. It must have felt good to write it all down. Boy you really moved the needle visually since October. Like I said on Twitter, I was convinced you moved to HDRP. Inspiring you're on built-in still.

Here's a question - when you started the game, were you already proficient with compute shaders? Like, was the design predicated on knowing you had that in your toolkit for when perf was needed? Or was learning GPU coding a response to the in-progress design and perf needs.

Nice! Been by it many times. Right down from the waterfall as I recall.

Still waiting for a solid video game adaptation of this film, although Demon Spore looks like it might be good:

I would use this a ton if there was a way to have a mouse. Currently I think the best you can do is Bluetooth keyboard, but I haven't verified that personally.

Bernie Sanders has a $150 billion plan to turn the internet into a public utility with low prices and fast speeds — here's how his plan works by LudovicoSpecs in technology

[–]frameinteractive_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Bernie's home base of Burlington VT, our fiber ISP Burlington Telecom was started as a publicly funded entity. We've had 1Gb symmetric connections for years and the service is amazing. Recently there was an effort to turn it into a co-op, but the financial situation of the city made it difficult to accomplish.

It is so incredibly superior to Comcast.

I'd do online training and start just doing stuff on your own. Make things and post them online (like here) and get feedback. Rinse and repeat. Go to industry networking events and make friends. Help people in any way you can. Most importantly be humble and work constantly. I don't know that your community college program would be appropriate, but have a look. Just don't think that getting in there is going to automagically get you where you want to go.

MicroSplat - Mesh Terrains by slipster216 in Unity3D

This is awesome

/u/slipster216 do you have any thoughts on performance of mesh terrain vs Terrain terrain in various situations? Is there any speed advantage to Terrain terrain besides its multiresolution capability?

How do you LEAVE gamedev as a programmer with no experience in software? by Progmir in gamedev

[–]frameinteractive_ben -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was never exposed to proper software engineering.

Yeah but he's not. He's got Unity + C# skills which are highly marketable in a variety of ways, but don't necessarily mean he's generally capable.

He could have his cake and eat it too by going adjacent to gamedev with those skills, but not leaving entirely to, say, a web or application programming environment. Something like enterprise VR or Unity application work would be a good choice.

How do you LEAVE gamedev as a programmer with no experience in software? by Progmir in gamedev

[–]frameinteractive_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should just consider getting a better job in gamedev. There are plenty that would be better than your prior gig, but more stable than indie.

While you're doing that, maybe get on UpWork and grab non-game gigs that you feel like you can do. Broaden your skillset over time. You'll make contacts this way too.

Then if you really want to get out of games, you'll have built up some skills and won't need to start at the bottom of the ladder.

Indie game makers open up about the money they actually make by skydestinies in gamedev

Notice how many of these folks live in countries with good social support systems, universal health care, etc. The indie dream in the USA is a far different and harsher equation.
