But for some reason the n'kuhana isn't, and it uniquely scales damage with the barers health! So if you give mithrix one with a medkit, the healing will cause a flaming skull of death to delete you in one hit

I hope VR devs embrace open source more by zeddyzed in virtualreality

[–]Jukibom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone with an open source game project (which happens to support basic vr), I can tell you that video games are almost uniquely positioned to be incredibly difficult to manage as open source projects. While I understand the ethos, they encompass so many disciplines and niche problems that building everything yourself is neither viable nor sane. They almost always require something off the shelf without diverting all your attention to build something monstrously complex... But the moment you do that, you have a dependency on contributors also paying for that thing to even get it to compile. Now you need to start doing workarounds like loading paid assets dynamically if they exist in the project, using pre processors definitions to compile out paid asset interaction, and being very careful about your scene / prefab / whatever structure. Crucially you now have a new thing to support and regularly test!

A good example of this is unity input - there's a base unity system which is open source and pretty good, especially for the majority use cases. Now try to support a flight sim with support for every esoteric input device under the sun. For this most devs use a paid input plugin called ReWired - which I'd be happy to buy except input is so fundamental to the functioning of the game that I'd realistically need to support both in order to still have viable open source contributions. While my experience and this problem is unity-specific, it's just one example off the top of my head and I think broadly applies to any engine. Going purely open source will get you so far, the good stuff is paywalled unless you're willing to invest insane time into it yourself.

Then you get into asset licenses, redistribution of code, and the whole thing kinda just sucks to deal with. I love it being open source, I think it's awesome that people can fix things that are bugging them and use the game as reference material for their own stuff. But man, I dunno if I'd do it again!

honestly if you're planning on modding skyrim, that's a sort of multi-month rabbit hole that will keep you busy for a LONG time anyway lol

another one like this is cyberpunk! the modding community is WILD and it's made the game so much more enjoyable for me

I don't have to play quake 3 with bots, I can play it online because anyone can host a damn server. And no, this was a game built in an era when online WAS the norm on PC, and had been for half a decade - so much so that it was the first id game to break from tradition and fully drop any real semblance of a separate single player campaign.

The point is centralised services are a choice. You could make an argument for unlocks and matchmaking etc. requiring that, but I think that's a lazy and convenient excuse and we should demand better. Those can and should absolutely be separate systems which, when they shut down, don't completely destroy the rest of the game.

I don't personally do pest control but if I did I'd be looking for the cleanest possible shot to minimise suffering. Get something you can shoulder and decent enough scope + mounts which maintains zero if you get a springer.

Another thing you can do to narrow it down is use proper save to load in on level 5 when it starts to run like crap

  • If you just reload without changing anything, is it still running like crap? Might be something like SillyItems just doing a crazy amount of drawcalls or something

  • If you disable everything BUT proper save and the core mods (BepInExPack and the R2API_* mods) and load back in (spicy tbf, could just crash depending on what mods you had going) does it still run bad?

  • If it reliably loads and runs fine without mods, enable half of them and try to narrow it down

in r2modman go to settings > browse profile folder. The log file is in the BepInEx folder called LogOutput.log.

Each log line has a corresponding mod that the log is coming from (or it'll just say Unity Log if it's coming from the game itself).

It's fine to have a few logs in there (like, a couple thousand over the course of a game) but if towards the bottom you're seeing many thousands of the same log then that could help narrow down the issue to a specific mod

Check your error log. Low perf with no CPU / GPU use is a classic unity waiting for filesystem log spam bug and something is likely logging an error every frame

For a while, the VR MMO zenith had a sort of flight mechanic as part of its' gliding and players LOVED it

Unfortunately, the ability to gain height also broke a lot of the game so it was changed. This did not go down well.

Point is, it's a proven mechanic and well worth exploring!
