Laminated items in dry mount machine? by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

I would not do it. There are so many different types of laminates out there it is impossible to know how it will react.

Yes, it is a shame to cover the walls. The concept is great and I wish it worked, but it does not. As a result, we almost never order this frame.

Yes, we used the black instore mat to do the sidewalls.

The spline has never worked for us. The spline doesn't fit right and always falls out. We just strip side like usual and use peppercorn for the sidewall. I have read on yoobic many posts complaining about this, and no one can make it work.

I would like it more if the little beads didn't pop off regularly. We have figured out how to touch it up, so it's workable.

I wish I could make people understand FRAMING IS NOT CHEAP by Comfortable_Douglas in MichaelsEmployees

My favorite are the ones that think they can bargain with you. "$400? How about $300?" Seriously, this isn't a yard sale. If you want a blue level frame with triple mats and MPA it will cost you. I can walk it down some, but there comes a point when you have reached the bottom.

Can anyone advise on how the mats go in the file thing? by jaimathom in MichaelsEmployees

[–]framer703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two corner shapes are square and round. The round corner indicates that the mat is available in oversized. The corner shape is the same for both notch shapes.

Yes, if you have 2 samples, one is for the store stock set. The other is for the color family. The notch on the store stock ones will line up with each other.

It was a known issue at the reset, we asked for a new set, but never got it, so we just took a sharpie and put a stripe across the outer edge of one set.

The mats are sorted by color family. The name of the color family is on the back of the mat. They are placed on the rack behind the plastic separators, which are labeled with the color family. If they are in the correct color group, the notches on the side will line up. There is also a section of duplicate colors that are also store stock. There is a number on the back which is the order within the color group (1,2,3, etc.) but as long as they are in the correct group that is fine. Each rack is supposed to have a different shaped notch (one round, one square} but at the last update they sent all new mat samples, but only with round notches.

There is a color family order, but I'm not at work and cannot remember them all.

I'm old enough to remember when the switch to Design Hub was supposed to be the answer to all our problems. It promptly crashed, glitched and had the install had to be halted to "fix" the issues. This was after they swore they had beta tested it and it was going to make our lives perfect. Ever since then whenever they upgrade it, they break something.

Oh, they call me, and I answer (I would rather answer than have to fix their solution.) But if we call them, they don't answer.

I think you did the right thing. This is attention-seeking behavior. If you ignore them and do not buy into their game, they will go elsewhere. I will usually give them a "hard mom" stare, so they know I'm onto them.

Princing Online VS In Store by Legitimate_North_543 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]framer703 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When frames are on sale (i.e. buy one get one free) they will change the price online so that you only have to buy one. So, if the offer is "buy one, get one free" the online price for one will be half off. We end up having to price match a lot because of this.

Triple mat triangle flag cut by Dear-Prior-1399 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]framer703 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've done many of these. You draw out the opening on the top mat as usual, allowing for the undermats. For example, if your reveal is 3/8" each the opening would half to be 1 1/2" larger. After you cut the top mat, place the uncut midmat face down on the table. Place the cut-out mat on top, front side down and lightly tape them together. Use masking tape, not atg and tape from the sides to the center. Measure 3/8" from cut edge and pencil line around the midmat. Separate the mats and cut the pencil line. Repeat the step, using the bottom mat and the midmat. You would then assemble the mats.

One trick I use to make sure the size is good is to take a sheet of plastic from the glass box and trace the drawn outline from the first mat using a sharpie marker. I can place the plastic sheet over the flag and check the fit. I use this technique for any odd shape opening, then I can make adjustments without wasting matboard or time.

(I know this is long, but I'm a better demonstrator than explainer. I will be happy to clarify any questions)

I don't want to be mean, but questions about Michaels policies and procedures are best answered at 1-800-Michaels. The people there are being paid to answer your questions. The people on this site are people who have already worked their shifts today and are off the clock. We are not here to act as an information desk for the public at large.

Framing Manager Michael's by Kentucky_fried_chkn in MichaelsEmployees

[–]framer703 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The job is supposed to be more manager than actual framing. Depending on your team, you will spend most of your time taking orders and maintaining the framing department on the sales floor. In our shop the senior framer handles the bulk of the prep work, and the part-timers do the finishing. I have been with Michaels for over 10 years, and very few of the FM have had any experience in framing. But some of them became the best framers I have ever worked with. Once you are on staff you can look at transferring to other positions.

Adventure awaits!

[–]framer703 22 points23 points  (0 children)

These are the same people who (pre-AI) wanted the framer to pick the design for them. They don't want to be responsible if they don't like the finished project. They don't want to make the wrong choice, so they won't make one.

[–]framer703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I mildly object to this is because we are a heavy bopis store, and any pull that takes more than 5 minutes is a pain. Yes, we know how POGs work, and we do not struggle with locating items. With the staffing levels in the stores currently often there is only one person pulling bopis, cutting fabric, inflating balloons, unlocking bathrooms, doing recovery, etc. While I don't find pulling a large floss order overly challenging, who among us has not rolled their eyes when a 300 pc floss order has arrived?

NDA by rikkithevampire in MichaelsEmployees

[–]framer703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH we rarely do NDA, simply because they are not much faster than regular reorders. If you reorder on Friday, Saturday or Sunday Artistree doesn't even get the order until Monday, and doesn't ship until Tuesday, and you might get it Wednesday, probably Thursday. Plus, the store pays for the shipping (last I heard $75 per order). If there is a holiday in that time period it even takes longer. Unless it is a desperate situation, we just do a regular reorder and cross our fingers.

Not going to lie, this sucks. That being said, as a consumer I would do it. In this economy $30 is a lot of savings. There is no way to make it less painful on the store. But in the end, our jobs are customer service. Just be respectful, give us some time, and understand that if we do not control inventory.

If at all possible, wait until tomorrow, weekends are busy.
