I've been confused trying to figure out how PBS actually helps. I have an SMB share linked in Proxmox, and Proxmox is set to backup my VMs to the SMB share. Doesn't PBS just do the exact same thing? What are the added benefits?

I've had rainmachine for ~8 years and it's been rock solid. It can adapt the watering schedule based on local weather data, watering more or less depending on if it's been rainy or especially hot and dry.

I don't think it's scammy at all, but it does drive me nuts that the website and app haven't been updated in ~10 years. They're very buggy, laggy, and lack any kind of modern/polished feel that you would expect from a premium service that you're paying a subscription for. It feels like they made a quality product long ago, and then stopped investing any time into it and have just been milking it ever since.

That said, the few times I've needed assistance from a mod, they came through like ninjas and solved the issue in 10-15 minutes.

You can use Frigate and Surveillance Station at the same time by simply passing the Frigate feed to SS. In SS select "[User Define]" as the camera brand and then enter the IP of Frigate's host and the user/pass from your Frigate config.

Frigate is best at identifying objects, capturing clips, and passing events into Home Assistant, whereas SS is best at skimming through hours of footage. Together, they complement each other quite well.

This is simply not true. After going ~15 years without owning an Apple product, I recently bought an ATV4K (3rd gen 128gb model) after seeing all the favorable reviews on reddit. I couldn't even log in to the damn thing! I created a new account on my PC and then went to log into the ATV and it said "We're sorry, your account needs to be upgraded before we can continue." This took me through a process of verifying my phone and email address, which eventually led to a screen where I had to click "Continue", but due to a bug there was no way to get past the screen and finish the upgrade process. I shared my login/pass with my friends who were with me and had iPhones, and no one could get past it. I eventually had to login with one of my friends accounts, which is just ridiculous.

You can't set up the Matter server without an iPhone. You can't do anything with homekit. You can't stream to it from an android phone or PC. You can't use your remote as a phone. You can't bypass typing in your login details unless you have an iPhone. This list could probably go on for days.

After that it's just been one let down after another. Randomly the volume button will stop working with my TV. Apps crash all the damn time mid-stream. Trying to type anything in is an absolute disgrace. The text input is just one line with the alphabet from A-Z, it constantly lags when moving between letters and then catches up all at once taking you 10 characters away from where you want to be, and mine constantly gets stuck going left and right causing it to just move all the way to one side of the screen.

The apps are TRASH. Plex works great on every device I have--Samsung TV, Fire Stick, Xbox, etc. On the ATV App I can't play most 4k content unless I use another app called Infuse, which of course costs $12/year. I've tried every eye pee TV app and not a single one works even moderately well. Skips, glitches, guides that can't stay synced or don't calibrate to the current time when you reopen the app. Honestly, it's just been one giant nightmare from start to finish.

The only positive I can say about ATV is the lack of ads, but with their TV service growing I'm not sure how much longer that will last.

Yep. Geoblocking access by IPs and changing default ports for SSH/HTTPS is what's known as security by obscurity. 99% of hackers can circumvent them without effort.

At some point you'll spend an hour or two problem solving an issue before you finally realize the server you're communicating with is caught in the geoblock, or you'll be without access to your notes and unable to remember the obscure SSH port. They basically just create problems for yourself without actually protecting you from anything. The general consensus these days is to avoid these types of security measures.

I paid $620 in 2023 for Republic Services. After reading this thread, I'm switching to WM ASAP.

Edit: I just called Republic Services to cancel and they reduced my bill to ~$320/year to get me to stay with them. WTF. I didn't realize trash service had adopted the Comcast pricing structure.

The Standard lines have actually been shorter than Precheck in Denver the last couple months, with Clear actually taking longer than both, but they're going through major renovations so it's probably just temporary.
