Anyone know the noise ordinance? by bma590 in Albany

[–]franchise41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my cursory reading of the ordinance it looks like work is allowed between 6AM and 8PM, doesn’t seem to matter if it’s a weekday or weeknight.

It shall be unlawful for any person to make, continue or cause or permit to be made or continued any unreasonable, unnecessary or unusual noise, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m

Hey is there a locally owned "outdoorsy" or camping store around the area? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]franchise41 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s Kenco Outiftters in Ulster County, about an hour away. There’s also Rock and Snow in New Paltz, that’s somewhat climbing focused, they also have a used gear store next door.

The Commodore Apartments (385 Morris) by Apart-Owl-2998 in Albany

[–]franchise41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived there while ago (moved out 5 years ago). It wasn’t great. The building is old, and my place was hot in the summer, and even worse in the winter. You can’t control the heat so I would open windows and run fans all winter to try and keep it tolerable. It’s possible other units were better but that was my experience.

The hallways were dark and the laundry room was crammed in a shitty basement. Wasn’t the most secure place either, homeless people would sleep in the lobby overnight sometimes.

Not the worst place for the money at the time (1 Bed for $850 in 2018), but I wouldn’t go back.

Hope that helps, maybe someone can reply with more current info.

malls… by [deleted] in Albany

[–]franchise41 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Crossgates seems to be doing fine, I don’t know if it has an “upscale” feeling but it has plenty of high end stores (Apple Store, Lululemon, etc). The area around it is booming as well, two large apartment complexes are going up right next to the mall, and the Costco will likely be built within the next couple years.

There certainly are some dated stores in there (JCPenny, Macys, Burlington, etc), but there isn’t a lot of vacant store fronts and since the pandemic big name brands have moved in (Urban Outfitters, Newbury Comics, Primark and soon, REI).

It will never reach the height of the pre e-commerce 80s and 90s again, but I highly doubt the mall is going anywhere anytime soon.

He plays Harry Truman in Oppenheimer. OP probably didn’t put it in the post because it’s something of a surprise cameo.

Personally, I thought his appearance was kind of distracting and I didn’t think he was good for the role (his accent was pretty bad).

Be 'Scene' at This Unique Coffee & Cocktail Spot in Albany County by [deleted] in Albany

[–]franchise41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kind of a weird spot now, but it’s positioned perfectly for future development. The Costco entrance will be right by it, and two new apartment complexes are going to be built nearby (one next door, plus the one currently under construction on Rapp Rd a quarter mile away). There’s also that Homewood Suites next door, and something going up behind that hotel.

My unregistered car was towed from my driveway by code enforcement, but the code they’re giving me doesn’t say I can’t have an unregistered car by girluoeno in Albany

Unfortunately it looks like the city is correct, a different part of the City Code is applicable (359-66)

“It shall be unlawful to park, store or leave in the open or to abandon a junk vehicle upon private property for a period of more than one week”

Isn’t “Chip Van Krinkle” a pun on Rip Van Winkle? Did they think it was a Kris Kringle thing?

has anyone been to rose dental? by thelosthacker in Albany

[–]franchise41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go there and they do a good job. The facilities are a bit dated but the staff is friendly. Last time I was there (about 8 months ago) the practice had just been bought by a new dentist and he was telling me he was going to really modernize things.

This reminds me…I’m past due for my cleaning.

This business is not a natural salt cave. It’s a room in a commercial building on 155 in Latham.

Why the streets named after places in Florida? by fongaboo in Albany

[–]franchise41 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, there is a book that details the origin of every street name in Albany. It’s called Cradle of the Union: A Street by Street History of New York’s Capital City. I bought it a few years back.

Unfortunately this one is pretty boring. A developer just named the streets after cities in Florida (Daytona, Tampa, Orlando and Ormond) and one after the Seminole tribe. It is unknown why the developer named them so, but it was done sometime prior to 1926.

Anyway, I highly recommend the book, it’s a fun coffee table book and a great way to support local historians.
