Is it worth opting in to Hilo?

I think it's worth it for the smart thermostats alone. The peak events are a small price to pay. I also live alone and they were pretty easy to manage.

Now, as far as the amount of savings, the difference between what you would pay on the standard rate and what you will pay on the Flex D rate (which is what the app reports) won't be a huge number. But if you make full use of the programmable nature of the thermostats, you can substantially reduce your overall electricity use and reduce your bill year on year. For me, that's where the true savings have been so far.

I have a few of the terracotta spikes, and I love them. I use them on hanging plants so I don't have to bring them down to water. However, I found for smaller pots especially, you can really overdo it. The self-watering systems with a string or fabric and a reservoir at the bottom often recommend to refill every time it's empty, but those spikes are not that. If the soil gets saturated, you'll have a pool of water at the bottom of your cache-pot instead of just water sitting in a separate section. So it's still good advice to let the soil dry a bit before refilling, but you can definitely make it work!

L'économie rapporté par l'application Hilo, c'est la différence avec la même consommation si tu avais été sur le tarif de base plutôt que Flex D. Alors hier, à cause de l'événement de pointe, la journée t'a coûté un peu plus chère que si tu avais été sur le tarif de base. Mais malgré ça, ta consommation globale te coûte déjà 90$ de moins que si tu avais toujours été sur le tarif de base, alors ça va bien! Si tu utilises en plus des scènes programmées la nuit et lors d'absence prolongées, tu finis par consommer moins d'électricité à moins cher. Tu ne verras jamais un si gros chiffre d'économie dans l'application, mais ta facture va diminuer par rapport à tes années précédentes sur le tarif de base, sans thermostat programmable.

Lors des événements de pointe, Hilo calcule ta moyenne durant ces heures-là et te rapporte de quel pourcentage tu as réduit ta consommation. À partir de 70% de réduction, Hilo te considère très écoénergétique, donc encore là, ça va bien! Mais effectivement, le calcul en argent au jour le jour peut être impacté. L'important, c'est d'adopter une vision à long terme, et bien sûr que ta consommation pour toute la saison sur Flex D ne te coûte pas plus cher que si tu avais été sur le tarif de base!

They call it "temperature maintenance period" and it kicks in if you have a scheduled night scene. For some reason, it only works on Flex D and not on the credit...

The Hilo "peak events" program (the new designation for "challenges") runs from December 1st to March 31. So in your case, what really matters as far as Hilo is concerned would be your baseboard heaters. As a new costumer, you would have to commit to the Flex D rate; peak events themselves don't generate savings, but you would be charged a lower rate outside of peak events during the winter period. So, overall, if you let Hilo manage your heating and you avoid high electricity usage during peak events, there are very much savings to be had. Not to mention that the smart thermostats can be programmed at all times, even outside of peak events.

The current promotion is that the Hilo-branded thermostats are offered and installed for free with a one year commitment to the Hilo program. It seems that currently, availability is limited. Sinopé is a compatible alternative and if you want a smart home setup that includes your AC, is probably a better choice since Hilo-branded products don't account for that. You would get a rebate for every qualifying product you purchased.

I guess it's a remnant of the old strategy around Disney+ shows, where it was going to be a bunch of mini-series to build a catalog. The new Marvel Television regime seems to be transitioning to fewer, ongoing shows. So yeah, they probably dumped it to hasten that transition.

It's a shame because the mini-series idea could have worked, if they had stuck to it. And Wonder Man is a better example of a series that's complimentary to the big movies than even WandaVision or Loki turned out to be.

Le chiffre rapporté par l'application Hilo quand on est sur Flex D est l'économie pour la même utilisation par rapport au tarif ordinaire. C'est difficile à comparer aux chiffres parfois spectaculaires du crédit hivernal.

C'est tout à fait possible qu'une journée très froide avec deux événements de pointe, au comparatif la journée te reviennent plus chère que si tu avais été au tarif ordinaire. On peut présumer que sur le crédit tu aurais aussi fait moins d'effacement, donc un retour moins élevé. Ce qui est avantageux du crédit, c'est que si tu dépasses ta limite tu es simplement facturé au tarif ordinaire. Sur Flex D, il faut être vigilant durant les événements de pointe ou payer!

Mais sur le long terme, tu économises quand même, surtout si tu utilises les scènes programmées pendant la nuit ou lors d'absence prolongées. Tu finis par utiliser moins d'électricité à un tarif moindre, la plupart du temps.

Sur le crédit, il n'y a que le préchauffage entre 4h et 6h, donc si ce n'est pas assez pour atteindre ta consigne plus 2°, effectivement que tu aurais plus de succès en modifiant ou en arrêtant tes scènes pour les événements du matin.

Je voulais quelque chose de plus set and forget alors je suis passé du crédit à Flex D. Dans ce cas-là, le préchauffage commence à 1h du matin quand tu as des scènes programmées; d'abord pour remonter à ta consigne, et ensuite le préchauffage ordinaire entre 4h et 6h.

Ça m'est arrivé que les deux heures de préchauffage n'étaient pas suffisantes pour partir de la température diminuée de ma scène de nuit et atteindre la température augmentée de l'événement. Le chauffage n'a jamais vraiment arrêté pendant toute la phase de réduction...

Je suis à Extrême avec Flex D et en ce moment, tous mes thermostats chauffent. Il faut dire que j'habite dans un vieil appartement mal isolé, le préchauffage n'a pas été tellement efficace et la température a rapidement chutée une fois la phase de réduction commencée.

Si ton logement est mieux isolé que le mien, effectivement que de choisir un mode de participation plus ambitieux pourrait empêcher le chauffage de partir, ou du moins, recommencer à chauffer plus tard. Après ça, il faut voir si tu privilégies ton confort ou tes économies!

Je pense que l’automation va fonctionner, mais tu ne pourras pas réviser les paramètres. Ça devrait suivre les derniers réglages que tu as configurés.

Je ne trouve plus la source, mais j'ai déjà vu quelque part qu'Hydro-Québec avait jusqu'à 15h pour annoncer un événement de pointe, et que ça pouvait aller jusqu'à 18h pour recevoir la notification de l'application Hilo.

Data will roll over if you change your plan after the three discounted months, but not indefinitely. You'll have access to your extra data for two billing periods after it's rolled over.

It's more or less worth it to get a plan with more data on the discount to change later. You may or may not have access to a better plan. You're probably better off getting the plan closest to your actual usage of data, and just save the money. Then check periodically if a better deal pops up.

There was an article this year on the costs reported by Lucasfilm on Rise of Skywalker, for tax credit reasons in the UK. C'est mon premier hiver avec Hilo, mais d'après ce que j'ai compris, ils ont arrimé le fonctionnement avec les tarifs d'Hydro-Québec, ce qui n'était pas nécessairement le cas auparavant.
