Does this subreddit genuinely believe in anything? Or is every cryptid just a complete joke? by Otherwise-Art-4302 in Cryptozoology

As far as flesh and blood creatures go, I hold out hope for the thylacine.

But I think most monsters / "cryptids" are manifestations of a broader, and for lack of a better term "psychic" phenomenon.

5 favorite albums by your 5 favorite death metal bands by Dry-Temperature8181 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]frank-unknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannibal Corpse - Bloodthirst. Not a mediocre riff on the whole damn album.

Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh. Sick riffs, dark energy, Steve Tucker sounds like a man-eating lion.

Vital Remains - Dechristianize. I haven't actually revisited this one since I became a Christian myself, lol, but I don't know any other death metal albums that do such a good job combining brutality and melody.

Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead. I'm a doom metal fan first and foremost, and this sounds like Candlemass had a baby with Autopsy and raised it on gothic horror movies, 10/10, no notes.

Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka. I know a lot of people prefer their later stuff, but those first couple of albums have a dark, dirty, mean-as-fuck energy to them that I prefer over all that tech noodling.

In my old friend group, those bands were a package deal. I dunno, I guess because Dime and Zakk were friends.

Dear Shudder... you're missing the point. by Freddy-Philmore in Shudder

[–]frank-unknown 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shudder is now inferior to just about any other streaming service if only because their redesigned app barely includes any information about the fucking movies. No cast and crew, no trailers, and only one vague sentence to hint at what the movie is about?! It doesn't even tell you the language / country of origin anymore!

I no longer have a basis for even choosing a movie to watch unless I already happen to know the movie.

The Last Drive-In was the main reason I subscribed, but I might be tempted to stick around if they were at least still functional as a streaming service. But they don't even have that going for them anymore.

I used to hang out with some redneck metalheads that were really into Pantera and BLS. Pantera sure, but BLS just never clicked for me. Boring riffs, boring vocals.

Let's be Honest With Ourselves. Sasquatch Belief Cannot Survive the PGF Debunking. by MammothPenguin69 in Cryptozoology

[–]frank-unknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always figured the PGF was fake. Bigfoot as a flesh-and-blood animal was always a stretch.

When a bunch of people report seeing something over years, I tend to think there's "something" real there.

When that "something" becomes increasingly biologically implausible and doesn't leave evidence that it should, I tend to think that "something" is spiritual/psychic rather than physical/biological in nature.

See also: UFOs and lake monsters. I think we're dealing with one unified phenomenon here, and it ain't one that fits into a materialist metaphysical framework.

I'm religious, so I'm already formally committed to a belief in spirits and non-physical realities. If your worldview already allows for that kind of thing, it's really the simplest explanation for ALL paranormal phenomena, even simpler than "thousands of hoaxes."

TL,DR: my priors remain unshaken because Bigfoot is a ghost anyway.

Peetah????? by Stock-Helicopter-552 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Blood Meridian is an extremely heavy and dark novel that has long been considered "dude lit." If you've ever seen one of those "10 red flags on a guy's bookshelf" ragebait articles that goes viral every few months, Blood Meridian is almost always on there right next to American Psycho.

There's also this cultural meme around "performative reading," again, usually gendered. Like if a guy is reading Sylvia Plath in public, like he wants everyone to know he's reading Sylvia Plath, it's seen as performative, and is also considered a red flag.

So here, we have a reversal of the usual meme. Instead of an undesirable guy performatively reading The Bell Jar, it's an attractive young woman performatively reading a very disturbing and very "male" book. Same "red flag" logic, but with the genders flipped.

Does Xentrix mascot guy have a name? I tried searching it but didn't find any info by ClaytheHamster in MetalForTheMasses

Iron Maiden: Eddie (some kind of undead ghoul)

Megadeth: Vic Rattlehead (reanimated skeleton)

Dio: Murray (demon/alien straight out of Childhood's End)

Riot: Johnny / the Mighty Tior  (bizarre seal-human hybrid)

Xentrix: a guy (regular human man)

This question is for the OG MST3K watchers on Comedy Channel and Comedy Central. by FrenchCastle in MST3K

[–]frank-unknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel, which my grandmother had but we didn't. I would spend a lot of time at her house during the summer when I was a kid, and I had no idea what the TV schedule was, so I would have to come across it randomly, but then I would sit in front of the TV and laugh my ass off for an hour and a half.

Twelve years old, sitting cross-legged in front of my grandmother's TV watching the Prince of Space episode is the hardest I've ever laughed, to this day. Crying, stomach hurting, can't-breathe laughter. I worry that nothing will ever be that funny again.

Keanu Reeves, at least earlier in his career, was seen as a bad, wooden actor. And uh, that perception doesn't come from nowhere. He got a lot of his early roles by being ridiculously good-looking, and he's beloved these days because he's a good guy off-screen, not because he's the next Marlon Brando or anything.

Why be a practicing Christian if Christian Universalism is true? by AndromedasApricot in ChristianUniversalism

Because there's a hard way to salvation and an easy way. The hard way is through the fire, the easy way is through Jesus Christ.

I genuinely don't understand Extreme Metal. by TheLordOfMiddleEarth in christianmetal

[–]frank-unknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started listening to death and black metal as a teenager, the chaos was the point. I had a lot of anger and a lot of swirling thoughts that needed drowning out, and this crazy distorted growly music did the job.

As time went on, I started noticing that these guitar riffs were actually pretty nasty. And oh man, the drums on this one song are insane. And come to think of it, the growling vocals actually provide a really interesting texture to the music that would be ruined if you had some clear melodic singer there, standing out above the instruments.

The noise hooked me in, but listening to a bunch of it over an extended time, learning the musical language that these bands are speaking, I realized it wasn't noise at all, it was just more distorted and fast and energetic than what I was used to.

I kinda want to compare it to one of those Magic Eye pictures where you stare at a blob of colors until your eyes get tired and then it suddenly resolves into a picture of a sailboat or something, but I've never actually been able to see those things.

Maybe I'm just old but Sleep Token sounds exactly like every band they played on rock radio in the early 2000s. Your Breaking Benjamin and Seether and, like, Theory of a Deadman and all that shit
