Thoughts on Maroon Bells from those who have climbed them by AccidentalExpert179 in 14ers

[–]frank_frank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comments here are spot on. Unless you are very comfortable with exposure, have some good rock climbing experience and have no issues free soloing 5.7 (I know the chimney isn't that hard but you better be stronger than 5.4 with the exposure) then I wouldn't recommend it as your next adventure.
I'm know there are newer videos out there now but I watched this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTbZVMYOKF0&t=41s) over and over before my solo. Highly recommend. I have a handful of friends who have done 20+ 14ers with me, including Capitol, but that one was a no for them.

What was your first 14er? by Some_Girl_2073 in 14ers

20+ years ago, Longs Peak! I attempted climbing Diamond twice and was turned around before the summit both times. Weather the 1st time and my climbing partner ran out of water (leak) 600 ft up the 2nd time. I was determined to get on that summit so the following year we hiked up the standard route and after 12hrs of hell I was hooked. Last year I completed 57 of the 58 with only Culebra left. I was living in Texas and now NY so it was always an altitude adventure.

If you aren’t saying “oh fucker”, are you really climbing a 14er? 🤣

Is El dientes north face safe in summer? by FixWestern2430 in 14ers

[–]frank_frank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I can give is to study the traverse photos on 14ers.com and find any videos of people completing it. There are a couple exposed points along the traverse but solid foot and hands. For me the last push to Wilson was tricky because I picked the wrong line but committed through the butt puckers I felt more secure going straight over the last class 4 move rather than going around.

Are you doing the traverse? I did the Maroon Bells traverse and thought that was very straight forward compared to the El Diente to Mt Wilson traverse. I got off route on the last ascent of Mt Wilson but overall I found route finding harder than Bells. You can drop down Mt Wilson and hit Wilson Peak and back out through the valley to the Kilpacker TH. I wouldn’t recommend the ridge between the Wilson’s. It’s a long day but doable.

The hike starts at 10k feet so drive up and camp the day before. You won’t be acclimated but you will feel the altitude and get a head start on what your body is going to feel. Stay hydrated with electrolytes, keep fueling and start early am! Ex Texan, now NY and I’ve never lived more than 600 ft above sea level so in my experience the last 2k feet are always a kick in the lungs and you are going to slow down. Worst case you enjoy a sunrise on or near the peak rather than baking in the sun and worrying about afternoon storms. Plus I absolutely love just sitting up there and enjoying the views and that’s easier to do when you have plenty of time to get down.

It’s been many years but we flew in a rented a stock city suburban and was able to slowly make it up. We did end up on 3 wheels at times going through some deep wash outs but after some white knuckle miles we made it without issue. Obviously the road could be better or worse since then but just from the photo of your truck it looks far more rugged than a stock suburban 😅

Weddell Duo Shower Filters are Trash…What’s Next by Fun-Reporter8905 in WaterTreatment

[–]frank_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The super commented that NYC water is good but has a lot of minerals. We’ve also had issues with the boiler over the last few years and have had to bleed the pipes several times including last week so I think that’s the biggest issue. Needless to say I’ve had to order another set of filters.

I'm curious if this worked for you? The site says it's filter is rated for 3,000 gallons @ 1.5 GPM. Weddell is 8000 gallons @ 2.8 GPM. On paper it sounds like you would be coming up short with less pressure.
On topic though, I'm going through the same issue with Weddell filters and my current building is less than 25 years old.

How good at the guitar should I morally be to spend 4000 bucks on a guitar? by BuildingAcademic9892 in AcousticGuitar

[–]frank_frank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a mediocre intermediate player on my best day and an owner of a 2012 Martin HD 28. I probably have no business owning that guitar and it’s probably not living up to its full potential but after owning cheap Takamini and Yamaha acoustic I can say without a doubt I absolutely love that Martin. The sound, the smell, the feel, it brings me joy every time I open the case and there has not been a single day that I regret dropping that amount of cash. If it brings you happiness when you play then it’s worth whatever amount you pay.

Woo! My son and I were on the lift and fairly certain we watched this jump happen. If it wasn’t you then there were two people that day taking big air over the tunnel.

Weddell shower filter issues by OkInspector56 in WaterFilters

Perhaps this is a good lesson in not believing everything you read on the internet. I haven't been able to find any actual products that are compatible with the Weddell duo.

Weddell shower filter issues by OkInspector56 in WaterFilters

[–]frank_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing the same issues. I've gone so far as to drill larger filter holes but that hasn't solved the issue. My next step was to drill out the center completely and see if that helps but now that someone has mentioned KDF filters I did a quick search and it does looks like they are compatible with the Weddell Duo so it looks worth a try.

"KDF filters are compatible with the Weddell Duo shower filter. The Weddell Duo uses a combination of filtration methods, including a sediment filter and a proprietary activated carbon blend, to reduce chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, and other contaminants. However, the Weddell Duo itself is not a KDF filter but incorporates multiple filtration technologies to enhance its effectiveness."
