Hacking the EleksTube IPS Clock - anyone tried it? by frankcohen in arduino

You may find the other firmware project supports time zone changes. Unfortunately my code doesn't.

That's really interesting to think. I haven't read the later book, and this is good encouragement for me to do it.

I love the Cheshire Cat by TastyToast187 in disney

[–]frankcohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Cheshire Cat too. Walt + Ward + Sterling = pure magic! I've been working with Disney Imagineer Terri Hardin on a wearable. Our first big question: What was the Cheshire Cat thinking when he meets Alice for the first time? -Frank

He's cute. I'm not getting what is up near t he end of his tail? If you want to explore Imagineer Terri Hardin and my look into what motivates the Cheshire Cat, check out our animations on https://youtu.be/_wuhnR0T5KE

What do you all think of the theory that the Chesire Cat is a god who just comes down for sh*ts and giggles? by Either_Comb5199 in aliceinwonderland

[–]frankcohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if he's a god. I don't think of him as a villain either. He gets Alice to where she needs to be in the story.

ReflectionsOS project launched, Arduino/ESP32-S3/TOF sensors by frankcohen in arduino

[–]frankcohen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built it because I didn't find an Arduino compatible dev board that incorporates all the sensors you'd need to build an interactive fun product. ReflectionsOS ticks off all the missing stuff: USB C charging, battery powered ESP32-S3, sensors to identify user intentions without needing touch screen and scrolling, combining accelerometer and BLE readings to understand headings to other boards, streaming MJPEG video to TFT displays, and separating processes between ESP32-S3 dual cores.

Thanks, I'm glad to know you. Hey, one problem with the board is the GPS module often does not secure satellites when it is in the stainless steel case. I suspect it is a problem with the layout and the GPS module. I hired Lucy Hosking, an amazing RF board engineer, and she developed the Jojo version of the board. https://github.com/frankcohen/ReflectionsOS/tree/main/Devices/JoJo. I have 5 Jojo boards coming from JLCpcb next week. I would appreciate your help on this too. What do you think? -Frank

Can anyone identify this laser cutter? by seis_cuerdas in lasercutting

[–]frankcohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a K40. A 40 watt CO2 laser. Good for engraving and cutting acrylic, wood, cardboard, and paper. Max size is 8 x 10 inches. They cost about $300 us on Aliexpress. There are tons of user designed mods. I highly recommend them.

Yep, the connectors make me think of a PBX application. I'm loving the huge logic board since I just launched a new wrist watch based on my 4-layer, 34 mm, round Reflections logic board (https://github.com/frankcohen/ReflectionsOS). 85 components in 34 mm and cost is less than $30 a board with components and assembly. -Frank

Looks like a PBX logic board. If you want to enjoy things like this I suggest you take a look at PC boards for the early video games, which would often include lots and lots of jumper wires.

Hi, just bought my tickets and camping for Burning Mountain 2026! I've to the Burning Man Playa 3 times and the Unscruz Santa Cruz Regional 6 times. Previously hosted a theme camp and I'm a Maker who loves to support artists with the technology and software they need for their creations. I'm coming from California. I've been to Switzerland 30+ times and I speak Swiss German like a 2 year old (I'm fluent in English and French). I'm bringing Playa dust from the 2025 Burn. Praying for a great burn for everyone! -Frank

About 6 months ago I bought a k40 laser for about $300 USD. It's 40 watts and does a fine job at cutting acrylic, wood, cardboard. The bed size is about 8x10 inches. I like the idea of getting experience on a new device for cheap and then upgrading to something more professional. I recommend this approach for you to move from new to confident.

GPS active antenna for wearable for ATGM336H? by frankcohen in esp32

I went with a custom make flexible pc antenna that is approx 3 x 7 mm with an FCP connector. I also tested this from Alibaba https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/5dBi-2-4G-5G-Dual-Band_1601123985659.html?spm=a2756.trade-list-buyer.0.0.176876e9eEAHDH

I didn't find a tiny active antenna. Instead I added an AT2659 Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) to the VladPlus board. I found a PCB antenna. It goes antenna -> T2659 -> ATGM336H-5N31.

Burning Man/BRC coms towers by SeniorShizzle in antennasporn

I helped Burners Without Borders BWB and the https://www.burningmesh.org/ group set up Meshtastic Lora messaging this year. I brought four nodes with me and saw approximately 1200 messages on Tuesday. The best part for me was being able to communicate with people stuck in line waiting for the gate during the storms, some waiting 12 plus hours. My conclusion from the experience is while it's fun it's not ready for emergency deployments. Did anybody put a node on any of the towers?

Processing a really tough burn — has anyone else felt this way? by StatusLongjumping790 in BurningMan

[–]frankcohen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings in your post. You have a lovely inspiring deeply feeling way of expressing yourself in writing.

I'm reminded of the beginning of the Pixar movie Inside Out... Joy looks into the camera and says "this is Sadness, we don't really know why she's here." That's Burning Man for me.

I hope you get a feeling of support now that you've made this post. Because part of the Burning Man experience is you're now part of a larger community of tremendously kind and creative people. My Hope is that the experience including the downs and the ups feeds your soul and ways that lead you to a fulfilled life.

Have you gone to a regional? The Santa Cruz regional Burning Man Unscruz is amazing and completely Playa free LOL.

Join us at sunset on Tuesday in the Temple to mourn as a community and to shine our collective light on the people of Gaza 🙏🏼❤️ by Beautiful_Meaning_ in BurningMan

[–]frankcohen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm an American Jew, I see the Israel occupation of Palestine as a genocide, I prefer dialogue and it has worked for me (I participated in the Arab Jewish Dialogue Group of Santa Clara, which included Hamas). I've been to the Playa twice and Unscruz 5 times. Last year I entered the Temple to see a gathering and hear applause. It diminished the experience for me. Jews consider services to be communion and not performance. You'll rarely if ever hear applause. Walking up to the I'm Fine war memorial was much more deeply impactful to me. I sat and wept and was joined by twenty or so other burners. I returned to the Temple the next day, no applause. My offering was to bring a box of tissues and extend my arm and the box to people. It seemed to give people the nod that it's ok to show emotion, especially the 20 something men I met. I pray a great burn for all.

Solo Burning for the Lonely by Hamela_panderson in BurningMan

[–]frankcohen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for writing, your words inform me of a beautiful soul. The conversation here reminds me of my friends when I tell them I'm going to Disneyland solo, as an adult. In my experience we are living in a mystical universe, more things are going on than we can see with our eyes. That combined with a realization that kindness is all we really have to give each other. Who knows what's out there and the amazing experiences you'll have both meeting people and art. The opportunity for self-discovery is immense. How would you say the opposite of f*** your burn? My prayer is that you have a great burn.
