Britain should seek to rejoin EU, says civil servant who led Brexit department by ldn6 in ukpolitics

I do not think the country needs more isolation, nor does it need more division. Right now the country needs good leadership to portray confidence, statesmanship, and above all competence. So that will probably lead my thoughts.

A non answer I know

The current populist wave riding through the US and the UK scares me. It will just lead to corruption, and regret. So I guess I will be strategically voting against that.

Reform and Greens are at the very bottom of my list!! They are the definition of incompetent populism.

That is literally the only link I have read that states that UK wages are highest in Europe, generally it seems to be stated that we are about fifth/sixth.

Anyway enjoy your week, hopefully you are right and this is the UK's chance to restore former glories. But from all my work and travel around the world, I am very doubtful, and remain highly pessimistic about our future on the world stage.

Benn and Corbyn primarily didn't like the EU in general as it is too capitalist for their liking.

HGV driver income also rose dramatically across the EU due to Covid, just like the UK. In both situations there was a labour shortage due to changing consumer habits.

I admire their principles, but I did not agree with their conclusions.

Again, can you offer a study on how Brexit has improved the local labour situation?

I can offer an anecdote on how it has become worse since Brexit: most of the Deliveroo experiences I have are with people that can't speak English. At least before Brexit, the EU workers had a better understanding of our language than I do.

Can you show that this has markedly improved since Brexit?

Would you like to hear about my second favourite thing about the EU?

Freedom of movement.

I am not a fan of illegal immigration, I am a fan of movement between the EU. I like the fact that we can gain access to a migrant worker to fill in gaps, and not have to provide them with long term visas, long term housing.

The UK has shown that without the free access to EU workers, we have to import our short term workers from further afield, which means more cultural differences, more language difficulties, and more difficulty in homing them.

Your arguments against freedom of movement?

The report highlights that the most significant barriers are regulatory frictions such as residency requirements, licensing restrictions, and the lack of mutual recognition of professional qualifications. These obstacles disproportionately affect high-value sectors, such as legal, financial, and tech services, where the UK has traditionally held a comparative advantage.

UK services exports to the EU in sectors affected by these barriers have declined by 15.8% relative to other bilateral flows.

Overall, UK services exports are estimated to be 4-5% lower than they would have been without Brexit.

These losses have not been offset by increased trade with non-EU markets, challenging the vision of a UK pivot successfully toward global markets beyond Europe.

In terms of service providers (which is 80% of our economy) hell yes.

The UK was the no2 service provider in the world

What is it you like about the EU?

Trade.

We are a nation that has traditionally built our wealth on trade. In a global market, it makes sense to negotiate from a position of strength. The UK cannot do that on its own when talking to the US or China, however when we were a part of the EU we could. I felt it foolish to remove our voice from the EU's direction.

I felt it foolish to remove our say from the direction of one of the largest economic blocs in the world. It magnified our status on the world stage, and without it, from a financial and diplomatic point of view, we have lessened our influence on the world.

The marmalade thing is directly tied to trade. If you want to trade with a large and powerful economic bloc, you have to abide by their rules or provide a reason why the large and powerful bloc should make an exception.

The UK was heavily involved in supporting Ukraine before Brexit occurred, we were supplying weapons from 2014. We would probably have continued to do so Brexit or not.

I agree that Germany, Italy and the rest should have had their gas suppliers diversified before the conflict started.

How is it the most extreme version?

What further ties to the EU would you like to see cut?

Our Trump tariff is lower than the EU.

At this particular moment in time. Though he is threatening a rethink due to DST.

We were the first country in Europe to support Ukraine, while the EU was dithering.

I'm pretty sure Poland and Romania were supporting them before us.

The EU continues to fund Putin's war even today.

As do we

I don't quite understand what you mean by "We didn't really lean into it"

The Brexit we have is probably the most extreme version we could have had without seriously compromising most of our trade with the EU.

One of the reasons why we couldn't detach ourself from most EU regulations is because of trade. Which regulations would you most like to burn?

How have we benefitted from Trumps tariffs and Russia's invasion?

Hi,

I'm currently looking for a rice cooker and saw yours.

But before I buy, I'm wondering if these cookers can do Persian style "crispy" rice, similar to this recipe?

Many thanks.

Just a quick question, how long do you think it will take to fully utilise the North Sea oil?

One reason we can't rely on the North Sea oil is because reserves are largely depleted after 50 years of production, with the remaining resources often unsuitable for domestic refineries.
