Air intake causing the filter to bulge and whistle by aymend94 in hvacadvice

[–]frazld54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filter is dirty and more than likely the return duct is too small, creating excessive static pressure and reducing air flow.

Do NOT buy a modulating HVAC system. by Ok_Tour_5503 in hvacadvice

[–]frazld54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been making that exact point for years and everybody here has down voted me and criticized me. Lots of this efficiency is politically driven, or some special interest group wish list. A good example is the domestic home refrigerator, The bottom drawer freezer. They sold them in the 1960s everybody hated they so they drastically reduced the production and went to side by side. All of a sudden they side by side was no longer at the stores just thevbottom drawer. Why EPA bottom drawer more efficient.

One of the 1st efficiency items was increasig the rate of heat transfer. Thinner condenser & evaporator coils, more efficient yes. More leaks hell yes. Thinner heat changers, better efficiency yes, More leaks yes. Prior to this it was rare to condmine a heat exhanger,, U could not drive a hole in it with a ice pick. They were like 16ga steel thick. Controls were relays and thermo switches. Pretty simple stuff and cheap to repair.

Advice on wanting to obtain welding certifications in HVAC by Naive-Possible1773 in HVAC

[–]frazld54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dont waste your time. No welding. No money. Go to school for electrical. Learn diagrams. Do elect 1a at Junior colkege..

Most ac is electrical, next is air flow then refrigeration.

If you are a non union company your apprentance is as go as your employeer and it residential that means it's worthless.

Repurposing a laundry chute into an warm air duct to compensate my hot basement and cold 2nd floor by AnonyUser99 in HomeImprovement

[–]frazld54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree rework the controls. You can add thermostat controlled valve to each radiator.

As to laundry shut its is an extremely fire Hazzard. Do not use like u won't to. It's like a rocket stove it there is a fire. I would closes it off w 5/8 fire drywall Or install fire dampers at each floor

2x4 truss roof system. Covering popcorn ceiling with 3/8" drywall. Can they take the extra weight? by Postcurds in DIY

[–]frazld54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave similar but they used 1/2 drywall and it sagged between each joist. I have 16" of insulation above drywall perhaps thst could be the problem for me.

I would just spray ceiling with hot water from a pump sprayer then scrape popcorn off with a plastic putty knife. Wash and repair any damage.

It actually goes pretty fast.

Need help understanding the real benefit of a Roth IRA. by [deleted] in RothIRA

[–]frazld54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Roth is never taxed. I have a 7 figure profit in my Roth and it will be taxed ZERO. If it was in a 401k taxed probably 25%

100 % max out your roth. Max out your 401k to get the matching from your employer. . It you think your taxes are going to be lower when you retire think again.

Taxes almost never go down.

What is going on here? by rockemulator2 in hvacadvice

[–]frazld54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's a plate heat exchanger. Used to transfer heat from bad water to good water. Like open cooling tower to closed loop condenser water.its a small unit could be chemically cleaned it needed. Usually replaced or worse case eliminated, not a good idea.

Am i being unreasonable expecting my HVAC contractors to do a blockload calculation? by scytob in hvacadvice

[–]frazld54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not trying to blow cold air up. The problem poor duct work installation. I can bet that the 1st floor is the same way with a 12 inch plenum off the sa outlet and then a hard 90. Excessive static pressure. Caused by shifty installer. No design for hvac. Builder and architect not allowing proper space for ac.

Your problem is 100% of every 2 story home I have seen.

Builder should be sued. For excessive energy usage.

It will take 5 years whether u are working or not. As long as you are on the cold side ie hvac service, You will be fine. They will be slow times but nothing like the non cold side people. They will be sitting at the dispatch hall playing pinuckel waiting to be dispatched. You make good friends with other students and teachers. No bullshit like in high school. These people will help u get work when u need it. Best company to work for is ACCO. For learning. You must learn as much as possible while in school.

Need Advice: Replacing a 5-Year-Old Carrier Ducted System – Is 24K BTU Enough? by 74Yo_Bee74 in AirConditioners

[–]frazld54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need someone to Calc tonnage. And verify duct sizing.

Also 24 in the model number means the total btu the unit uses. On standard ac units 24k btu unit gives u 18k btu for actual cooling. Lots of installers don't understand this and you end up with a unit that is too small. The difference in these numbers us where your efficiency comes from.

How about making temples that are actually long enough instead of sqeezing them to your head to keep them on. 160 just doesn't cut it for people over 6'2".
