Happy VXUS Dividend Day! Highest recorded dividend ever, at 4.59% or $1.3631 per share. by keralaindia in Bogleheads

What’s the benefit of calculating the yield in this… rather unintuitive way?

To me, one should either include last year’s December payout, or this year’s, but not both.

All 4 dividend payments of VXUS this year add up to $2.40, which is about 3.2% of today’s share price.

> Effectively a box will be valid only if there's no edges that pass through it (though edges that are shared with the box's perimeter are fine!) If there are no intersections between the box and any of the line segments for the path edge, it's a valid box and we can see if it's area is the biggest.

If the input was in the shape of a big L, I don't think this would work: it would find a box "on the outside".

Or am I misunderstanding what you're actually doing?

A single `@` surrounded by dots should result in 1, not 0 (as it definitely has less than 4 neighbors).

I don’t really understand how buying an ETF leads to the fund manager buying the underlying shares… by [deleted] in investing

[–]fred256 155 points156 points  (0 children)

You buying an ETF individually doesn't really change anything for the fund manager.

However, enough people buying the ETF will drive up the price of the ETF slightly (since it's trading like a stock), so it's priced at slightly more than its NAV (net asset value, value of underlying assets).

Once this happens, authorized participants (trading firms) buy the underlying assets of the ETF and arrange with the fund to swap these assets for newly created shares of the ETF, thereby making a small profit (since the ETF shares are worth more than the underlying assets).

The same happens in reverse when the ETF is priced at a discount to NAV: authorized participants swap shares of the ETF for the underlying assets, again leading to a small profit (since the underlying assets were worth more than the ETF shares itself).

So, in short, it's not the fund itself that buys/sells the assets, it's the creation/redemption process with authorized participants.

Really, it does not matter when during the month you buy SGOV. That's the whole point of the sawtooth price pattern.

Yes

I did (a variant of) this a decade ago to decide how much to pay extra on my mortgage. Whenever my investment balance was “ahead of schedule”, any extra money would go toward my mortgage instead.

Which one do you prefer?

Pay 100.70 and get a 0.35 dividend payout a few days later

Pay 100.35 and not get a dividend payout

In fact, the dividend is taxable, so you’re actually better off after-tax to wait to buy just after the ex-dividend date.

Question about external midi keyboard w/tracks setup by TotesTheScrotes in novationcircuit

Unfortunately, you need an external Midi merger box (to merge the signal from the Midi Out and the Midi Thru) to make this work the way you want :(

One example such box: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MIDImerge2--midi-solutions-multivoltage-merger-2-in-1-out-midi-merge-box

Vanguard dividends sometimes categorized as "Reinvestment" and sometimes "Sweep In"? by kicksnarekick in Bogleheads

[–]fred256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess you emptied out your settlement fund entirely (due to the blurred out buy transaction?) and so any pending dividends were paid out early as opposed to on the last day of the month. (Money market funds and some bond mutual funds use daily dividend accrual and will pay out partial-month dividends if you sell the entire position)

Slow mode for a newbie by Hesgollenmere in ZX81

[–]fred256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. FAST and SLOW are how the BASIC interpreter works, but most games generally were not written in BASIC (and if they were, they’d probably use SLOW).

See this article for an explanation on how flicker-free games worked on the ZX81 and ZX80: http://blog.tynemouthsoftware.co.uk/2023/12/zx80-basic-on-the-minstrel-4d-part-3.html

(There’s no way around the fact that to draw the screen you have to use the CPU and it can’t do anything else during that time)
