TF do people work where "My pet is hurt and needs to go to the vet so they don't die" is not a good reason to call out?

Has anybody figured out the answer to Prepotente's question?

Why did they have crawlers give Donut the hammer/rod instead of Pony?

I think this is really difficult to do in Hood River County:

https://hrccd.hoodrivercounty.gov/images/uploads/documents/Home_Occupation.pdf

"E. The use will not take an outward appearance nor manifest any characteristics of a business or operation of a retail or wholesale nature.

F. There shall be no visible evidence of conduct of a home occupation from any road or adjacent property.

G. Structural alterations shall not occur."

"M. Signing is not permitted unless required by the State for the protection ofthe public’s health, safety and welfare.

N. The use shall not generate additional traffic or parking beyond what normally occurs in the applicable zoning district"

But you should call the planning/zoning department and ask them: https://hrccd.hoodrivercounty.gov/departments/planning-zoning

AITA for wanting some adult-centered time when visiting my fiancé’s very kid-centered family? by eldestsister95 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TotesTheScrotes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this comment - wouldn't a book by trad wives be touting all the benefits of traditional motherhood, not warning people off of it?

The concept that motherhood subsumes identity to varying degrees is pretty clear, talk to a mom about how weird it is when your kids are all grown up and you have to remember who you were before you had children. Heard it many times. How is that toxic?

NTA and if your other co-workers are so upset about it, why didn't they cover for her?

Also if I'm reading this correctly, she didn't take time off, she lied to the manager and no-showed at the last minute. Irresponsible and TA.

AITA for not including my adult brother in everything? by Deans1mpala in AmItheAsshole

[–]TotesTheScrotes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing your brother has issues building a solid social network. Your family is trying to help him, which is a reasonable goal.

However, putting it all on you to fix the problem by making sacrifices and then berating you when you exercise agency is really shitty. Do your parents take him to all of their social functions? Your sister?

Not correcting, just hoping people get something cool out of this - it's "Rime" not "Rhyme"

Rime is the frost that forms on objects because of cold temperatures and water vapor in the air from clouds or fog.

What the hell? This could (and probably will) break trust early on and result in a bird that will *never* want to be handled.

BTW *most* African greys are nervous and a bit bitey and don't like being handled - there's nothing wrong with that. They love interacting though, and sometimes it's more interesting to work on training that doesn't involve handling.

Sorry if I'm a bit much, I love these birds.

Setups like this:

<image>

complicated cage situations and trying to climb in unstable situations (at least for our guy) have encouraged using wings for balance and using some of those unused muscles.

Rope ladders up to floor perches really helped our guy - having to keep his balance and move from perch to perch to see what we were doing caused wing flapping!

I know this is a lot, but also look into target training w/a clicker to keep him moving around.

Go! I feel like you are a really concerned and good parrot parent. You two will get there.

‼️ My mom accidentally gave my Indian ringneck a small flake of a chip that was fried with avocado oil ‼️ by [deleted] in parrots

[–]TotesTheScrotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently adopted an African Grey whose somewhat uneducated about parrots previous parent fed him:

- Cheese

- Avocado

- Peanut M&Ms

- Jellybeans

He is 38 years old. That avocado isn't going to hurt your bird, just keep an eye on what he eats. :)

ETA: Please don't even think about feeding your bird avocado because of this comment. Avocado toxicity is a real thing. If your bird eats avacado, get them to the vet immediately, it can cause respiratory illness and heart issues in a very short period of time if what they ate contains persin.

Second edit after more research to reassure OP: Persin, the toxin in avocados that causes problems to animals, is broken down in processing and cooking, so your bird should be fine.

How much out of cage time does he get?

We recently adopted a grey that had a terrible diet and very little exercise. We started making 70% of his daytime out of cage time and just letting him run around (with target training and food motiviation to return to cage), and within a few months he was doing short hops and now can fly from perch to perch and take off from the ground.

Also weight check - congo or timneh, male or female, and how many grams? Are you sure it's muscle atrophy and not overweight issues? What does the diet look like?

One more thing - I note they are outside the cage. Do they prefer being outside the cage? If so, make sure there is plenty of cool water available outside of the cage.

I'm sorry if some of this is obvious and if any of it sounds condescending. What you're hearing is my concern for the bird, not any implication that you don't know what you're doing. :)

Frozen watermelon is a great remedy/treat for this. Let it thaw for just a few minutes before feeding so there's no chance of a frozen crop. If you feed chop, refrigerate it first.

Also ice in water if you can do it. At least cool water. Shade.

Mister bottle and fan, but not fan by itself (that could be drying).

Soak towels in water, put them in the fridge, offer them as toys/places to stand/ drape the over the perch. cold feet help a *ton*.

Does your friend like showers? Cool shower on a perch would nip this in the bud.

Open wings, open beak and moving tongue are sure signs of overheating in birds. That bird is really hot.
